Best small quiet generator Cummins Onan P4500i

We unbox and review the Cummins ONAN P4500i Digital Inverter Generator. We find out if it can start a 15k BTU A/C and remain relatively quiet under load. We use our Db meter and test the sound levels.

    ok, sure the remote start is cool, but how does it help that much since for starting, nothing should be plugged in. You still have to walk out and plug it up. Sure you can do a warm up with the remote, but pretty soon you must get up anyway, right?

    We bought two of the first versions. Ran them almost 24/7 for two years straight for an off grid camper. One generator had a tick over 14,000 hours, and the other over 9,000 hours. Both still start and run (however one is hard to start 14,000 hour one). Needless to say we were very impressed. When we built an off grid cabin we bought one about 6 months ago, and the new one has around 2,500 hours. Run Mobil 1 full synthetic 10W-30 HiMi and change the oil around every 500 hours (or when oil shut off happens). I use E3 22 spark plugs and change every 2,000 hours. Never messed with the air filter except rinse it out. Had to take one apart after 6,000ish hours due to a rubbed wire. Other than that no major issues. They are a tank of a little machine! Surprised that a single cylinder with a dipper oil system and no oil filter can last that long.

    What's the fuel consumtion per day

  • @BretteCaldwell

    @BretteCaldwell

    8 күн бұрын

    @@OffRoadOutpost That’s hard to say per day as daily needs varies; but I will go through around 12 gallons (two 5gal safety cans,and one 2gal safety can) per week. Running regular pump gas since new and no problems. If I run 12 divided by 7 it comes to an average of about 1.71gal per day roughly. This is with a E3 22 spark plug. However most of time it’s a light-medium load on the generator. If heavy loads (table saw) I will use more.

    Always start a generator with no load. Allow it to come up to speed, then turn on it's breaker for the load. Shut off with no load, for best care of your genset....and your electronics.

I was looking at the Honda Companion Gen and this one and decided on the Cummins 4500i mainly because the 4500i cost $1049.00 and a 2200 Honda was around $1100.00. Just made since to get the 4500i and sell my Honda 2000. I'm glad I did, just my 2cents.

    I own two of the identical looking Westinghouse iGen4500DF generators. They both have run great but also have some issues. I have had the first one for about a year and a half and I used it to charge my Victron inverter with my off-grid power system. It charged the inverter great for 5 months. It had charging issues briefly before, but they went away. Recently, the charging issue came back. It randomly stopped charging my inverter and caused the inverter to shut down. Both times, I also tested it with a space heater right after they problem occurred, and it it would not fully power the space heater either. It was never overloaded. I always kept my input current limited so that the generator was never above 50-70 percent load and I use a powerful carpet blower to keep it cool. The second generator, which I have had for about a month, does not start on random occasions. This is probably easily fixed, but not exactly something I appreciate for a newly-purchased product. Both generators are in warranty and both issues are yet to be diagnosed. I intended to set up one of the generators to auto-start with an Atkinson generator start module connected to the inverter. I also tried to Westinghouse WGen9500DF, but returned it. That generator was an overkill for my charging needs, but also would not start without manually setting the choke. It came with a remote start as well. So, what is the purpose of a remote start if you have to manually set the choke before you start? Again, likely something small may have been wrong out of the box, but still unsatisfactory for a new product. A friend, who also had issues with his, believes these generators do not put out their rated power,. Although well-running, at this point, I do not believe these Westinghouse generators are adequate for my auto-start and charging needs. I need a system that will not fail. Unfortunately, I need to run off a large propane tank, so this Cummins generator is not an option. I am planning to purchase an LP Cummins Onan RV generator. I hope the $4000-$5000 for that unit will get me a generator that can run without any babysitting. Any suggestions or comments on personal experiences would be appreciated.

    Great video. Also, i have to say, each time a new gen-set is run for the first time or after overnight (or long period) of stall (not in running), its best to first manually pull the hand pull start for more than couple of times (with the switch OFF) so that the oil and gas circulated. Then turn on the switch before manually pull start or button start the generator. Thay is only if you want to make the engine last longer. Plus, i still have not see anyone do it in any generator review or whatsoever in youtube.

    Rolling a new engine over with the switch off removes the assembly grease off the valvetrain wear points and begins squeezing out the assembly lube from the rod and wrist pin journals causing premature wear and engine failure. It has splash lubrication. It has no oil pump so so oil is being circulated by rolling the engine over. The oil dipper has to reach running velocity through the oil to kick it up where it is needed. It uses 10w-30 so that oil stays in place for well over a year once oiled. It would oil it a lot better it you picked it up and shook it or rolled the whole generator over on the lawn before starting it. The fuel also doesn't circulate like a fuel injected rig. There is no fuel pump. It is gravity feed and it fills the carb in the time it takes to turn on the fuel switch, activate the battery and hit the start switch the bowl is full.

    HOW ABOUT THAT!!! You FINALLY "tested" a semi-quality gen-set! Now try a Cummins/ONAN TWIN cylinder 5KW running watt inverter unit! I own one and it's quiet enough to RUN ALL-NIGHT IN A NATIONAL PARK!!! Only two liquid-cooled Honda models QVR's (and some built-in liquid-cooled RV Suzuki, Yamaha, Yanmar and Kawazaki's) and the 5KW ONAN twin air cooled are legal to do that. Read the posted sign board in a National Park Campground about "Quiet Hours" and what's allowed and not allowed or your Golden Eagle Pass. When the power fails, a natural gas Cummins/ONAN won't bother your neighbors. My neighbor has a whole-house liquid-cooled ONAN that provides heat and hot water and I can't hear it running when I'm outside, 35 feet away. His is a triple. It'll also out-last 5-10 GENERAC one-lunger's.

    @Jazz 16 Yes they do use Honda engines but they are loud. They are not built like the Honda EU generators where the cabinet takes care of the noise issue. Winco uses very good windings and generators heads. I have one and has been trouble free for years. I have the Honda GX390. Great motor but it is loud.

    Honda has legendary reliability and industry standard inverter technology. Let's run them under a load and hook up an oscilloscope and see whose generator outputs a waveform cleaner than a Honda. It's not all about decibels and fuel capacity, better look at what your waveform looks like. Honda does have bare bones generators (no fuel gauge, no load meter, etc) but there's a reason they are more expensive. Edit: I have actually looked pretty in depth into this, and spoken with several who are very invested in solar power, etc. Many have told me they wish they could get the inverter Honda uses on its own to use with their solar power projects, etc. It's supposedly the best inverter tech you can buy.
