What a fine cricketer Hughes was. He played spin with ease, was comfortable against pace and fielded superbly.

This was the real turning point tour of Windies long domination . In 75 they got smashed and in 79 they smashed back. Aussies rattled . Marshall was the best bowler i have seen , but this quartet was the best WI ever produced in my opinion .

Can’t argue with any of that. Not only did they have the greatest quartet of fast bowlers ever seen they also had Richards at his absolute supreme best.

One thing that a lot of commentators seem to overlook is how proficient the WI tail-enders were with the bat, or certainly could be. Big Bird, Roberts and Holding could not be underestimated, they were strong guys who could score quickly.

@@chemistryset1 every player goes through a bad patch, thats just cricket. Forget about the underarm incident - that goes against his captaincy, not his batting. Agreed with the comment above, an average of almost 54 is above world-class. Viv richards rated GC as the best aussie batsman he saw. Thats coming from the GOAT for me :)

This is with reference to the comment by Mr. Titus. Sometime in 2018-19, I was forwarded a Whatsapp message compilation of 10 world cricket fast bowlers who had never bowled a No Ball in their cricketing career. The list contained greats such as Kapil Dev from India, Ian Botham and Bob Willis from England, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding and Bernard Julian (strange entry!!) from the West Indies, Richard Hadlee from New Zealand and then Dennis Lillee and Jeoff Thomson from Australia. At the number ranking 1 and 2 were listed Imran Khan and Sarfaraz Nawaz from Pakistan, respectively. But watching various old matches on this medium, I found that all the 10 greats listed had overstepped the line in quite some matches, which simply were called NO BALL!! I second the last line by Mr. Titus. Such disinformation is actually an insult to the great bowlers who served the game and entertained us during their careers. No Ball or No; they shall remain Great and a heritage to the World of Cricket and teachers to the youngsters all over cricketing world.

1970 to 1990 is the golden era in world cricket. Every cricket playing county produced genuine super star of international stature. Since 2000s the game of cricket started declining and now has become almost "free style wrestling" . Too much money, too much greed and no game or sport at all. No player looks super star or even cares to become one. Loads of money. Ounce of fun. The beauty of test cricket has gone. 50 over one day matches now a history. If you look 1970 to 1990 era cricketers, they look athletic. Nowadays "players" look like gamblers. No grace. No ethics. And worst of all no enthusiasm.
