Wesson & Leavitt Revolving Rifle

/ forgottenweapons
The Wesson & Leavitt is one of the scarcest revolving rifles made in the US, with no more than 50 made (some sources say only 16). The reason for this is that the Dragoon revolver which Wesson & Leavitt based the rifle on was found to be in violation of several Colt patents. Most importantly, when the Wesson & Leavitt Dragoon was introduced in 1850, Colt had a patent on the feature of having the cylinder index automatically when the hammer is cocked. They filed suit against Wesson & Leavitt, and won the case in 1851, before very many of the revolvers had been made.

    I may have said it before but, I think your videos are great, 3/4 of the time I look up old guns I see in war movies and documentary's or whatever it's your videos. They are well made, some history, great explaining function the variety of weapons. It's too bad you can't shoot them, that must be hard for you, just lucky to handle them I guess. I inherited a Remington whitmore model 1878 kind of got interested in old guns after that. I hope you keep doing this for a long time. thanks

    Both patents: 1. granted to Samuel Colt 25 February 1836 2. granted to Daniel Leavitt 29 April 1837 were for firearms IMPROVEMENTS. The improvement offered by Colt was the cylinder, mechanically rotating 1 position when hammer was being cocked. The improvement offered by Leavitt was the forward side of the cylinder being arched to prevent chain fire due to gas leakage.

    Very interesting cylinder rotating system to circumvent other patents. Also keeps cylinder stop (Colt type) from scratching side of cylinder. Is stock detachable or one piece integral with the pistol grips. Would be easy to change barrel lengths if available, and easy to exchange extra loaded cylinder for spent one. Love seeing old firearms I am not familiar with.

    +Peter Timowreef More or less, yes. Due to the open nature of the revolver cylinder and the volatile nature of black powder, sparks and explosion-flame of the fired cartridge could ignite the black powder in nearby cartridges. +Forgotten Weapons What really gets me is, that this seems easily preventable precisely by a handguard which is designed in a way to seal off the chambers you don't want to fire.

    i just realise having a hollow tube under the barrel that slightly larger than the cylinder will protect your hand in case of chain fire, and that double serve as a fore grip. All the projectiles will follow the tube fly outward, left your hand unharmed. Now if someone try that out in real life

    +ch0k1ngh4z4rd The Nagant revolver relied on the cartridge case as well as the forward movement of the cylinder to create the seal. That is why Nagant ammo is so strange-looking. Doing the same thing (a forward-moving cylinder) for a black powder firearm wouldn't work as well. However, I am sure the problems would have been reduced.

  • @biteme1167

    @biteme1167

    8 жыл бұрын

    +MrWalkerklondyke Chain fire can be stopped by greasing the bullet after loading. I have used Crisco shortening and filled the remainder of the hole with it. Makes for an interesting contrast on the cylinder. Also using slightly larger bullets makes for a tight seal as some lead is shaved from the bullet when loading insuring a gas tight seal. Never had a chain fire using that method and not greasing the cylinder. Hope you found this useful.
