Welsh with Will - Duolingo. Dysgu Siarad Cymraeg
I now have a Patreon page. If you would like to get more out of the channel and support it at the same time, please check out my page here: tinyurl.com/2p83nkje
Those of you who follow this channel will know that I have been trying to learn Welsh (Cymraeg), for... well, EVER!
At present, I'm using the Duolingo phone app - No, this isn't a paid promotion, I just like the app. The Duolingo app comes in two flavours, a paid for version, and a free version - I'm using the free version :)
In this series, I thought that I would take you, one by one, through all of the practice sessions, from the very beginning, up to my present level, explaining my thought processes as I do so.
No, I won't always get it right, but when I do go wrong, at least you'll know how I got there :)

I've been using Duolingo daily since I started learning Welsh almost two years ago. You might be interested to know that Doctor Cymraeg has just written a book of 50 short stories for Welsh learners based on Duo's stories (which are only in French, English, German & Spanish) called "Parsnips and Owls: Short stories in Welsh based on Duolingo's 'Stories' " by Stephen Owen Rule. It's very good, as it has explanations & translations of a lot of the words & phrases plus comprehension exercises at the back. Thanks for the useful videos! Jeanette

Diolch Will! I am on unit 3 on DuoLingo. I find Welsh a little harder than Spanish, but easier than German! The Welsh literary language is like a different kettle of fish all together. I read Harry Potter in Welsh with the English version to compare. Reading the Bible in Welsh is very difficult! The hardest aspect of Welsh grammar for me so far is the nasal mutation, sentence structure and the many forms of the verb.

You probably already know Terence that Harry Potter is in the North Wales dialect. He is 'o' and they use dw i'n talu instead of South Wales wi'n talu I think from memory. Nadolig llawen! 👍🎅

Woh! That's interesting. Pronouns are one of the most stable elements in Languages. And that the Galatians (Celts) lived in Turkey( Anatolia) 2000 years ago might suggest some influence either way. Turkic languages sound nice too like Celtic languages. They have a nice rhythm to them.

Duolingo is really useful and I have been using it to learn Cymraeg. My only major criticism is that it favours the southern dialect and doesn't always make it clear which is which.

There does seem to be more blending of dialects these days, probably because of social media usage. Duolingo seems happy enough to accept my North Walian answers though ;)

I'll try and follow you on a regular basis because there are meny things I have forgotten since reaching unit 3 - and can I just say Duolingo Welsh probably won't make me a confident Welsh speaker but my goals as a welsh born person who has lived in Lloegr most of his life are to understand the vocabulary flow and pronunciation of the language - I butchered Llwbr Cyhoeddus so many times

Nice one, I've been learning on and off on Duolingo for a few years, you get sick of being asked to pay all the time pretty quickly but the Welsh course is pretty comprehensive. Wait until you get the two new accents later on in the courses, they make you listen.

Diolch Will. I also use Duolingo - good for expanding vocabulary and practicing spelling. Have you (or has anyone reading this) ever tried Say Something in Welsh? I can hardly recommend it enough. By the way Will, your "Learn Welsh With Will" series a few years ago was a great and fun way to start learning the beautiful language of your homeland. (In particular, I loved the Penblwydd Hapus one.) Have you ever considered reviving this series?

No I have never tried "Say something in Welsh" people seem to speak highly of it. I try to ring the changes when sharing my Dysgu Cymraeg, so that it doesn't become boring (hopefully).
