Well you know Dodge owners, always abusing and beating the heck out of their vehicles. Older Silverado owners do it too especially if it is a Z71. They'll thrash it off-road because of the upgraded suspension and locking rear diff and because of this the body will always be beat up which then later causes rust because they neglect to fix it.

Dodge owner here... The one thing I noticed when the guy changed the fluid in the dodge is he never mentioned the bands. Dodge even says in it's manual to adjust the bands every time you change the fluid. The reason why is because the front band is on the side of the housing but the rear is inside the transmisison pan. This is one of the major problems with these transmissions. Nobody seems to do this and then when they get loose/wear down from usage the transmission starts slipping or banging into gear. That DTS for the torque converter solenoid though... Dodge transmissions are notorious for going through solenoids. There is actually a guide to convert it to use the GM version. These transmissions just have a torque converter solenoid, a OD solenoid, and a transducer because it's just an older transmission converted to electronic control. Another good fix for this is a shift kit which takes no time at all to do. The thing about these transmissions is once you do a shift kit for the valve body and new solenoids it'll be a damn strong transmission. I had one in my 96 with a 5.2L. The previous owner did a small shift kit but never adjusted the bands so when it drove it would always do this weird long shift like someone riding the clutch between gears. I fixed that, changed the solenoids while I was in there, the filter, and slapped it back together. It would down shift on demand and go. His shifting issues is also likely due to a sloppy TV cable adjustment too. Dodge still used those on these trucks to make the transmission downshift using hydraulic pressure. These trucks were literally designed so that you can work on them yourself without the need of a computer. The side effect is they require higher than normal maintenance.

Just had that problem on my truck I have a 2000 Ram 1500 2wd the part is in the valve body of the transmission and if you don’t get the part replaced soon enough but it could already be too late it will round something off in the transmission I have experienced this from the mechanic I have been dealing with he continued to tell me the part didn’t exist when I knew it did and I have to have a new transmission because of it all of these transmission usually fail but replacing that part ASAP might get you a little more life out of it

The rounding off and a crap ton of metal in the pan is the information the mechanic gave me and after he replaced the part it still is junk I don’t know if I could have gotten more life out of it but I’m guessing that if it didn’t have to slip and bang into gear it wouldn’t have junked it as fast

Everyone seems to be hating on these trucks. But really I see these trucks running all the time with 500k on the odometer. And there's nothing really wrong with these trucks. The real problem are some of the people that own them. And I do know there are the "Lemon" of the bunch every now and then. Chevy's and fords suffer from the cracked dashes, transmission issues and rust. Don't tell me I'm wrong either. I see half rotted fords running around with busted dashes almost every day. And chevy's had that crappy IFS system. So really it's just a choice that the buyer had to make. "Which poison Is gonna work best for me?"

Speaking from experience, changing the transmission fluid on an older vehicle with high miles is the automotive equivalent of Russian Roulette, knocking all that old clutch pack material with fresh fluid could cause all kinds of issues. Hopefully it just needs something simple, but unfortunately having been in the exact same spot with both a Dodge and a Ford, you should brace yourselves for a rebuild. I generally don’t change the fluid on automatic transmissions with over 100K miles unless either the fluid is contaminated, or if I’m doing a full valve body service. Because that fresh fluid is going to loosen something up, and it will likely end up in one of the tiny fluid passages.

Really hope to see a towing test between these older trucks, especially to see how they compare to modern day pickups. Back in the 90's my father and I towed horse trailers through the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia in his GMC 1500 with a 5.7 and low gears ( whatever that was in 97). Our GMC's always towed beautifully.

My granddad bought a one ton chevy with the 454 big block. He used it to pull a trailer with two commercial mowers on it. It blew up the motor in two months. He replaced it with a 3/4 ton dodge with the 721 Cummings in it. He was still driving that dodge when he passed away in 2008. I forget what year it was, but it was the last square body dodge. It always pissed him off because the next year was the body he liked best. His wasn't the only gm truck that had problems either. I blew a head gasket in my chevy twice in a one month period. Finally figured out that gm liked to put undersized radiators in their trucks for some reason.
