To help with your confusion on the electronically signing a PDF, here is what is happening. Linus is trying to do it the "correct" way, to where it will actually be recognized by legal groups. In most situation, that will not matter, and either using a mouse or touchpad device like device to sign your name or just printing your name will probably work. When I provided support to a government agency, there were certain documents that needed to be electronically signed (speeded up the process as to not have to wait for physical copies to move from one person to another), and those would use signing certificates, those validated that the person's who's signature it was was actually the one signing it (used log in credentials to create the certificate). Edit/update: I've seen some discussion in the replies to this comment about the validity of signing a document electronically without using a certificate. When it comes down to what is accepted as signed, whoever is doing the signing will need to check with the people requiring the signed paperwork. I was in a position within the last year were I was attempting to get another job with a different contract company that provided support to a government agency. During that process, there was some paperwork that the company needed signed and they said it was fine to digitally sign or print it out and sign and send a scanned copy back. I used a signing certificate, and submitted that paperwork, only to have the company come back to me and tell me I had to resign the paperwork. I was told by their security officer that the way Gardner signs his documents was an acceptable way of signing. I'm not going to argue if what happened in this example is right or wrong, but it shows that there are places that have different standards as to what they consider to be digitally signed.

The PDF part seems to have been confusing for quite a few people. What Luke did was essentially scribbling on a pdf. This is probably good enough for most usecases, but wouldn't be seen as valid in most business to business relationships. The standard for pdf signing is Adobe sign. As a user, you have an account through your company, and your certificate is added to the PDF. That means that it's no longer just some scribbles on a pdf, but it can be proven that you signed that document, on behalf of your company. That is what Linus tried doing. I'm actually really impressed by how easy that appeared to be. As long as you have a valid cert, it appeared to be a viable free alternative to Adobe Sign, and that is not a cheap product. Pretty cool.

US Military for example, has the certificates on their ID Smartcards that they use for this sort of thing, in enterprise environments, this is more how it should be setup.

I think the issue with signing a document is that Linus is a company owner, and Luke is not, so while inserting a picture of your signature into the document is good enough for most cases of regular people, it won't fly in case of corporate contracts. Me as a company owner would also take the task as adding a digital signature which would be upheld in a court should the need arise, but I can see why most people would just do what Luke did.

  • @Ferkiwi

It's clear that Linus did not know what he was doing. If he were familiar with adding a digital signature like that (even in Windows), he would have probably already had a digital certificate or know how to get it without having to Google for LetsEncrypt, since that's not Linux specific. I'm sure this has nothing to do with him being a "company owner", it looks like he actually expected to not need any certificate and just sign it with a scribble like Luke did.

And if you knew anything about doing so for a company, you'd know for corporate folks certificates are generated and tied via your windows accounts as managed by your enterprise. Linux doesn't have a windows account to sign with thus why Linus had to google it since he needs to make a self signed certificate for Linux. In enterprise windows this is handled automatically and the certs have roots built in via Microsoft. I have no clue how you'd set this up on Linux but I'm sure its possible.

Here on Spain you are enforced to identify youtself if you are required to do so by the police and you must to have your ID on your wallet all the time. If you decline to identify, the police can bring you to the police station to propper identification.

I only use my keyboard for typing an email or in a search box and in certain programs. Just reaching for my keyboard feels like a chore sometimes. I chose Linux for freedom and while i had to use the terminal much more in the past. i never acquired the taste for it. I definitely feel his pain when asking for a GUI feature to do a simple task; the response is always do it the Linux way, which is the keyboard centric way. Many developers love the Linux experience and are out of touch with the people who are searching for another option but want a windows or android experience on Linux. Linux is slowly morphing from a system built by and for programmers to also offer an experience that is more familiar to the overwhelming majority of the population. Linus work isn't perfect but he is exposing many things that i would like to see addressed. Some of which i have asked for myself.

One of my customers was into game programming. I tried to teach myself online but that wasn't an enjoyable experience with a full time job. To many questions with no one to answer them. I don't mind using the keyboard for certain things but the basic daily user experience for entertainment and home computing is point and click. That is the experience offered by everyone else. That is where some Linux distributions are attempting to compete and they will have to rise to that standard to increase their user base. I'm enjoying the progress and hopefully they will take the constructive criticism from Linus and make something positive out of it. I would love to see some of these developers come together rather than everyone scattered in different directions. Look at what Solus has achieved with just a few people. What if 1,000 developers who were doing their own thing came together with a community goal; what could they do? With everyone abandoning the Gnome ship; i hope some of them get on the same life boat.

It's probably just that they've got other bigger things to work on, so small quality-of-life fixes can be hard to convince. For perspective, some compression formats look like six random characters and a couple of dots. If I'm new to Linux, or just not very familiar with compression formats, might've thought that those six random characters were some kind of fancy compression format. I agree that clearly indicating in the file name that it's in progress would be the best indicator. A GUI popup showing progress or a spinning circle icon are fancy and nice, but they may be a little out-of-scope for what's truly needed. Another option would be to hide the compressed file (by prepending it with "."), although there'd be no confirmation that it's begun compressing.

So, I think you’re quite unaware of what’s actually involved in eSigning documents. The image matching your signature has nothing to do with it, eSigning requires that it be cryptographically signed and usually there’s a third-party involved in verifying the identity of the person signing, because without that additional process there’s no way of knowing if an image of someone’s signature is even valid. If you’re given a document intended for you to print and sign, then you might get away with doing what you’re doing in GIMP, but if you’re trying to obtain a loan or something where there’s more at stake, then it’s likely not going to fly. At least not with anyone that knows something about contract law. You’re often better off printing, wet signing in pen, scanning and sending your documents to someone via some secure method. Otherwise you need to use one of a number of eSign services that provide digitally signed documents that hold up in court.

My stepdad owns an accounting company and I've been working there for about 4 years now. The challenges for the everyday use, including the signature challenge, was actually stuff I found useful and a lot of what I've seen/read about linux in general has made me consider trying to transition over to using linux in our office. The ability to just print without stupid settups or needing to go through the hp apps, is almost enough on it's own to consider transitioning since it's a pain everytime one of our printers dies on us or when we add new computers/employees to the office

I hope they pull you into WAN Show one day to talk about some stuff like they've brought on Wendell before. I'd also love if in a year they do this challenge again but instead of Luke and Linus, have it be Mac users so Jonathan Horst and Sarah Butt perhaps? And have the challenges given by people that daily drive Linux (you, Wendell, etc...) instead of just James.

The issue of not being able to attain root privileges in the file browser, consider that Linux is a multiuser system, and ordinary users do not normally have access to sudo or the root account. That is the job of the sysadm, that is, like Gardiner says, how the system is designed... it's not designed to be a single user computer like Windows. I am quite certain the Dolphin developers are well aware of this fact, the logic being, if you have a need to have write access system files or directories, you also have the skills to use the terminal.

Congrats on shout out, also not everyone had same reaction about their challenge and experience that they had, but I'm happy that not everyone is toxic in Linux community, this will help us who wants Linux to grow and become better and better, I remember 15 years ago, When I was trying to use Linux as desktop OS, it was pain, but today it's already getting so good, and people like you, and Linus media group, would help Linux a lot, because it'll help developers to see what to improve, and as many people will start using Linux, those companies who didn't even care to make software, or drivers, or anything else, will have to do it, either they do it, or they lose customer. I also use of MacOS, which is absolutely different topic, but there are very similar problems with mac as well, when user base is smaller than Windows has, companies will not bother to waste their time on it, and some of the problems they had, with elgato and other stuff, most of the times it also exists on mac. I think today Linux has biggest community ever had, but software needs more testing, most of the issues that I had, or they had for this challenge, and I think everyone else also has, is because of distributions are not tested enough, or sometimes it's just dependency problem, it's not ok, when system wipes entire user interface, or removes something useful, just because another program had some old/new library as dependency and package manager decided to remove old software that used old dependency including dependencies... how is that even an option? again... How? and I read comments regarding this challenge, that Linus was stupid? 99% of users, who is not expert in linux, or is not developer, will have exact same problem and they will probably never use Linux after realizing that it is possible to wipe entire system, and work they have on it, can be gone ( I know there was nothing gone other than gnome, but again, normal user will never know that it was easy fix, but it's easy fix for us, not for someone who never used terminal ), and that's all, Every time new Linux distribution appears, everyone goes same way, so many projects are based on BSD and Linux, that has much friendly approach and is targeted to non developers as well, you mentioned FreeBSD... OrbisOS is based on FreeBSD as I remember, I never seen my PlayStation 5 to require me to open terminal and install something to play on it, or watch something, lot's of projects use Linux and BSD kernels to build OS based on it, and Linux distribution developers have lots of resources and existing stuff, that they can use to make at least one distribution that is as easy as MacOS or Windows or even better, plus Linux community is so huge compared to Sony for example, and I get it, many people will argue that it's easier to make console OS than Desktop one, but why? I don't think so, it probably has more codecs and stuff supported including HDR and 3D audio etc, and some people again will argue about hardware as well, that they had to work on only one specific hardware, but no, this is not good argument either, Microsoft does all that as single company for every manufacturer and every device to work at least 10 times better than Linux distributions does, and if you open any big linux project on github, and look at amount of contributors, Microsoft doesn't even have 1% of software engineers compared to those projects, and those projects on their own, are doing good job, but then there are distribution developers, who just copy paste each others work and then just duplicate tasks, and they think changing icons and other visual assets make their distributions different, or better, but I don't think Linux needs more distributions with different logos on it, we need proper desktop distribution that can handle tasks as easy, or even better, than Windows, or MacOS does, because we already have distributions that are made for cloud, or other stuff, but we don't have enough good desktop distro, why? because distro developers are lazy, they take someone else's work(software), just make installer, new logos and they call it their own OS, when they did nothing useful other than just making dependency lists, logos and installers... actually not, even installer is not theirs, most of the time it's also separate project, separate people wasting their own time, and most of the time people don't even know who did that project, while distribution developer, who did almost nothing, gets all the appreciation.
