that makes so much sense! i was welding a trailer yesterday and i'm not a pro welder by any means but i can sometimes lay a decent bead. all my welds were full of porosity and i was so frustrated because i couldn't figure out what was going on. it was a bit windy and i didn't correctly clean the oil off the new steel. i used some sort of crappy citrus cleaner that had left a film behind so that must have been the issue! thank you!

I like the fact you mentioned the code and inspection - as a engineer we spec out the welds for a reason - most of the time we may not even understand all the complexities of what it takes to achieve the spec we just know what outcome is needed - I know you may think we know everything HA! However, most likely if we are calling something out because of some standard or because of an FEA model we have done. Another really good video!

Hey guys I am new to welding and I am listening and practicing the techniques you all share. However I have a question about porosity. You mentioned hydrocarbons like paint and wd-40 lead to porosity. Being that I am new to this industry will this be a problem for a cellulose rod like 6011 ? Guys at work tend to say you can burn paint off. I should mention by trade I am a mechanic. So I am taking the advice I received on the job with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the tips. I only weld for my own machinery, I don't do welding professionally, so I won't get inspected for it, LOL. But I do want to weld perfect and do worry about if my welds are strong enough. I seem to be hopeless at fillet welding and vertical welding. From your video I can see that I get undercut and worm holes a lot. I think I'm doing perfectly with the weaving and going at the right speed and angle, but obviously not. Sometimes I will get a perfect run in the middle of a run of crap weld. I always fix worm holes by clearing out the slag then welding in it and it's always perfect that time. I think what I'm doing wrong is I definately angle the electrode too steep and I must be moving too quick. Working outside doesn't help either, as the wind makes me wobble and I end up with the electrode going close then a mile away. I will try and do better tomorrow and will try and keep the electrode at the same distance as the thickness of the electrode. I am cutting out and replacing rotted metal on a tractor topper mower and typically welding steel of 3mm to 5mm.

I'm trying to fix a couple pinhole leaks in a hard radiator line. I drained the water from the line and when I attempted to plug the hole my weld had a ton of porosity. I'm in a garage with no draft, I tried more gas, less gas, material is clean aside from the inside which still has a little moisture from the coolant. Is the moisture inside causing my porosity problem? I've tried everything

I figure if I do everything wrong, can't blame me for x, because it was x, y and z and probably also included a few additional errors. One area of Porosity in my first weld (on a plow mount non-critical weld) may have been caused by smoking the stick and thereby screwing up the flux, or my lack of experience, having inadequate heat to start, and not pushing 7018 (Dragging). The stick got red hot and smoked and the flux chanced color and I wonder if that altered the chemical composition and wreaked havoc on that area of the weld. Maybe the neighbor's fire truck call this morning was a turkey frying error, not a porosity problem, anyway it wasn't either of us, so Happy Thanksgiving.

Idk of flux core is good horizontal postions tends to burn through if I try to even the weld on both metals I tend to focus more on the thicker part to allow more penetration and then weave it to the thin metal with out blowing through ? Any tips ?

There is a series on YT of a French guy making a Ford GT40 replica with a stick welder... It can be done if you're good and use 1.6mm wall thickness minimum. Quality bicycle tubing is about half that but you did say this was a chopper...

As a new hobby welder I am experiencing all these new welder problems. With about 6 hours experience with a 120v hobby stick welder. My biggest problem right now is trying to clean up my first pass welds. I mean some are really bad. So when I grind them and use the hammer and wire brush. Down in the bottom of all those imperfections is slag that I can't get to. So the second passes is worst than the first. Do you have any advise on this? Even grinding almost all the weld away usually can't clean up the slag. Thanks for your videos. I try to learn some from everything I watch.

@@hotlinedubai1235 LOL. Yes absolutely. I took a 2 day, weekend class at the Community college. Where I had a welder,pipe-fitter come in and show us what to do. It wasn't really for greenhorn guys. It was mostly as a refresher for former students that hadn't landed a job yet. But he let me in and I had a great time laying beads.
