When listening to this man teach, I think back to to my late father whom was retired army, combat vet, teaching me how to fix my own equipment. Something soothing in his tone and how he breaks me down to build me up.
Haha, I remember how I learned how to weld. At my old job, my boss was an old man...nice guy but he sucked ass at welding...looked like a line of chewing gum stuck in the joint. I never took any classes or anything, I just started messing with the machine after work and just practicing. The bosses son was the foreman there and he told me just do what it takes so the ol man won't ruin welds that we gotta look at. After a few weeks, I got pretty good then told the ol man let me have a crack at it. He about shit himself when I made a nearly perfect stack of dimes for a weld and just handed the stinger to me and said...this is your job now. And honestly, I suck at welding but for the purposes of what we were doing, it was fine. Now against this guy I'd look like a total choad. But that's ok, I never claimed to be great, I just like watching metal melt in a hot electric arc.

I like how you sweet talk your rod to get her going. I'm pretty much the exact opposite. I find if I insult it, the sumbitch runs perfect every time. On the dangers of chipping hot slag...just the other day, I was welding in a tight inside corner, got to the end, WITH MY HOOD DOWN...I whacked the end of the bead to see if I filled the crater at the end enough....last weld of the day...dadgum chunk of slag made its way inside my hood and stuck to my top eye lid...it felt awesome. I've been watching these videos here from Sweden with a delight! Thank you for making the content public. I'd like to see more "garagewelding" for us diy. Stickwelding that is :) Also more welding with smaller more portable models and some words on how this affects the approach. One application for instance is thinn wall round tubing (construction steel) lying flat on a hardox 400 steel plate. Sort of like a diy hinge mechanism type of situation. How to controll slagg and how to make sure you mix well with the host materials when one is thinnwalled and the other very thick. Also tip regarding hardfacing on the edge on 8 mm steel plates and on the face of similar steel steel. What to think about and how it affects the steel you're welding. Fast, slow and moderate cooling and the effects on the host and electrode materials. Also I'd like you to talk some about how vibrations and different types of bending affects the weld. End-craters, convex and concave form of a weld on 90 degree angles for instance. Very basic information but stuff that highly affect (at i guess so) how a skilled welder approaches a problem compared to me (a novice). As you can see im a happy novice with almost no knowledge but if these videos could close some gaps between licens welder audience and novice i think you'll find a bigger target area of viewers :)
Thank you for sharing your time and expertise with us.

I’m 65 years old my grandfather taught me how to weld when I was 13..! So by the time I got into high school welding and metal shop was a breeze......🎓👍
This is the first serious welding course I've seen on youtube. I really like it.
Really enjoy your videos. I've been a self-taught welder out of high school shop class for years, but I'm going back and learning a lot of the basics I've missed from you. Great Job, very clear explanation and your camera man's work is excellent!

You're not self taught if you took a class
he is a fantastic trainer he knows what he is talking about and has the skills to prove it
I've never welded a thing in my life but you make me want to

Can you do a lesson on how to talk to your machines?

@@chanakyasinha8046 That's total BS. You need some of that gel they use on the tens machine first.

He sweet talked that electrode!! Classic, just classic. Love it.
Thank you. You videos are very helpful. I recently purchased a welder and other tools for some planned fabrication projects. I am looking forward to doing fabrication work again and I want it to be of the best quality that I can do. PS: Since I first posted this comment, I have been spending time practicing as well as making various small projects. One of the practice welds that I make is to just run bead after bead padding a surface. I have learned how to accommodate variations in bead width of the previous path in order to maintain a straight path. Of course I do work on maintaining a straight path and consistent bead width, but still a small amount of variation creeps in that needs to be corrected on the subsequent bead. I have also watched a large number of the videos on this channel and have learned a lot, especially what I am doing wrong and what I need to do in order to obtain high quality welds. So far I have done SMAW (mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum (ugghh!), FCAW (carbon steel and stainless steel), MIG (carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum) and TIG (stainless steel and aluminum). I still have a ways to go but I am quite pleased with my progress and many thanks for your help.
I have an antique Marquette Redi Arc 180 amp AC welder that was made in the 50s or 60s and it runs great I must say I only normally run 6013 and 7018ac sticks and after watching this video you make me want to go by every kind of Rod and start practicing with the ones that are not so good at I like 6013 and 7018 because they are easy to weld with when I'm welding Rifle and Pistol bullet traps together and general farm equipment maintenance I haven't really ever had a need to use the other electrodes at least I don't think I have I'm not a pro I just do it for a hobby and I used to work on a farm and I maintenance the tractors and the Box blades and all the attachments that the old farmer I worked for had and my first year there I spent probably a quarter that time welding and repairing a lot of the old pieces of equipment that he had that had a lot of Broken welds on them and a lot of cracked welds as well I'll never forget him he thanked me so many times for that because he was taking all this stuff to a Pro welder that was charging him insane prices or at least that's what I thought for even really simple welds like I said I'm not a pro I've just been doing it for a hobby for almost 15 years and overtime I've acquired an antique Eutectic 225 AC stick welder, and then I went and picked up a flux core welder just a cheapo from Harbor Freight what's actually turns out to be a decent welder in the right hands, I just pick that up to weld the exhaust pipe on my pickup, recently I just picked up an antique Marquette Redi Arc 180 amp AC welder and for being made between the fifties and sixties 60s that thing runs remarkably well, I had to make my own leads for it, but only paid $65 for the welder and it lays down some damn good beads and I'm sure a lot of the pro welders that do it professionally would probably laugh at the dinosaur machines that I got but they both run extremely well and I paid 65 for 1 and Eutectic I picked up for 25 bucks at a garage sale and that one has definitely paid for itself probably a thousand times by now lol
I'm looking at getting into welding it looks like a lot of fun!!
Awesome video. You're a great teacher. Your videos have helped me tremendously.
Thanks for the tips. Just got basic inverter welder to fix my fence and this was helpful. I would recommend this course to any guy or gal who wants to learn welding and grow chest hair.
I live in the woods and youtube is my only teacher. Thank you kindly. I plan on going through several online training videos on everything welding before I go ahead and buy the equipment.
Nice video; good for intro to welding
thanks for making these videos my dude, i’m on my first year of welding and it’s always helpful getting tips from more experienced welders !🤟

Here is a tip, that is more important than any other: always wear a respirator when welding, and have good extraction. Make this your top priority......welding can seriously damage your lungs, if you don,t protect them. Also, when using a hand grinder, always protect your lungs as well. Even if it did not kill you: it could give you chest infections, bronchitis, and new pneumonia. Make this tip: your number one priority: If you intend to weld long term.
Workin for the state, and learning here in a minute how to weld and brushing up on these videos first. Thanks ya much man.
I tried first stick welding with your video and I succeeded. I always laugh and say "welcome to the stick welding" like you when my rod stuck. This is the trick for me to make the next bead regardless of failure. THANK YOU!
Bob your very entertaining along with informative. Would enjoy having you as an instructor, but at 60 I am learning via your videos.

Another great video Bob... After a while, when they get the hang of it....first pass left to right, next pass right to left.... keep changing... right to left then left to right. Don't be a "one trick pony". Also, learn to weld with both hands. It sure comes in handy when you find yourself out of position and have to REACH out for welds. Again... "Don't be a one trick pony" !!!
Thanks for this, I just bought a stick welder and have only just begun to attain limited success (AKA I suck haha) I'm one of the "older guys" just getting started. 40 years old is not too late! Every bit of advice helps! Thanks again!
I clicked here just to get a visual idea about how to make a basic weld. And got a lesson in craftsmanship instead. Helped me understand what my Dad (Bob the Boilermaker) never got to teach me all those years ago. I kinda like getting taught new skills by blokes named Bob. Thank you indeed!
I wish a man would talk to me the way this man talks to his electrodes 😂
So glad I found this video! Just started welding at work and I've got a lot to work on.
This guys knows his stuff ....wants perfection, bit of dry humour..great teacher.... even picks on his own work for not being straight...and gives a shout out to “ mig man “ ..that’s a master of trade
