Welcome to Mystara: Races of Mystara | Dungeons and Dragons
Ойындар
A remastered video going into detail about the various fantasy races in the Mystara setting. Who's in, who's out and who never appeared at all. Featuring one halfling race, two gnomish races, three dwarven races, TEN ELVES and a whole host of other races for your characters to play. From cannibals to fashion victims, your players will have enough options to sate them. Except drow. Nobody likes those guys.

No tieflings or drow? I am sold.
“Calling a Lupin a wolf man is a dire mistake.” I see what you did there.
Buenos dias senior, bienveidos to the Savage Coast. If you are tired, we have many posadas for a siesta. Wow, so this place was inspired by Sp... Italy my friend, we are all Italian here.
Great video. I was hoping that you’d mention Snappers, though. I did appreciate how you mentioned which races AREN’T found in Mystara. I occasionally get into arguments with my players about that distinction.

I left Snappers out because they were never playable races. I restricted it to some of the more memorable races available. I did have to leave out multiple races because of I didn't have time to cover all 50

@@Mr_Welch Huh. What isn’t playable about them? But, yeah, Mystara in theory could have oodles of player races. Either way, good job, sir!

@@johnbalk6091 there's no official rules for them unlike tortles. You could easily create rules for them with the system given in orcs of thar, but they never got official rules
I wonder if there are any Humans in Mystara. (I know; they are a rather rare race, but still, I would at least have expected a mention.)
Remastered races, interesting. Hope this brings more people to Mystara.
Good for you on remastering your videos
Sounds like N'Djatwa was a way to import Ogremagi. But yeah, if you take some of those less familiar races and regions, you've got the basis for an interesting campaign, as a start point and as the the only initially available playable races. Free land, if I'm using that slogan right.
I think I counted two images of your favorite doe eyed goddess in this remastering.

Yeah, needs more Winnoa
Lupin, Rakasta, and Phanaton are my favorites but I like a lot of these. Hin in particular; the perfect compromise between the needs of a dungeon adventurer campaign and the original flavor Hobbits from Tolkien's books. And I find it a huge breath of fresh air _not_ to have Drow (the old favorite of developers/publishers/edgy players) and Tieflings (the new favorite of aforesaid groups) crammed down my throat at all times. And while I really love Mystara's race array, my personal setting goes the opposite way: I basically _only_ allow half races. Like you said about what you leave out being as important as what you keep in: Examples of pure-blooded elves, dwarves, and the like have become vanishingly rare due to centuries of peace and interbreeding. Most "pure humans" actually have some not too distant ancestry in another race and every player character is generated in part by selecting two races (Standard Human and Variant Human, Variant Human and Half-Elf, Standard Human and Half-Dwarf, Half-Halfling and Half-Ogre, etc).
Hurray more remasters!!
If it wasn't for you I'd never know about my new favourite race of dwarves. Now let's all celebrate Oktoberfest in the Hollow World!
For the curious, a not necessarily complete list of the unique PC races native to Mystara, not touching upon the ones exclusively hidden away in the Hollow World like the Kogolors (ur-stock to dwarves and gnomes) or Hutaakans (Egyptian-flavored jackal-people), or the "well known" demihumans (dwarves/elves/gnomes/halflings) and humanoids (orcs/goblinoids/ogres/trolls/gnolls): N'djatwa (half-elf, half-ogre, best parts of both, but also cannibals and slavers) Lupin (dog people, later changed to wolf people in AD&D and 3e) Rakasta (cat people) Shazak (native name for lizardfolk) Gurrash (originally Gator-Men, savage gator-lizardfolk crossbreeds, a failed slave race) Cay-Ma (originally Cay-Men, kobold-esque caiman/lizardfolk crossbreeds, another failed slave race) Wallara (originally Chameleon Men, a distantly dragon-related magical all-male race based on Australia Aborigines; originally looked like Aborigine men painted up for Corroborree) Phanaton (tribal ringtailed lemurs with gliding wings) Brownie Redcap Dryad Faun Hsiao (giant owl with the personality of a scholar - no, not a humanoid owl, a normal owl the size of a person) Leprechaun Pixie Pooka (talking animals with magic) Sidhe (more fey version of an elf) Sprite Treant Wood Imp (fey version of a goblin) Wooddrake (anarchist human-sized dragon that can shapechange into an elf or halfling) Faenare (winged elf with minor bird-like features) Gremlin Harpy Nagpa (sorcerers cursed into a Skeksis-like humanoid vulture) Pegataur (incredible arrogant centaur-like elf/pegasus hybrid) Sphinx Tabi (flying monkey) Nixie Merrow Shark-kin (shapeshifting sharks) Triton Kna (fishfolk merchants) Kopru (illithid-faced merfolk) Sea Giant Aranea (shapeshifting spider wizards, not playable until AD&D) Tortle (humanoid turtles, not playable until AD&D) Ee'aar (Avariel, winged elves, but in Mystara, not playable until AD&D) Enduk (sagely winged minotaurs, not playable until AD&D) Manscorpion (centaur-like human/scorpion hybrids, both largely evil and not playable until AD&D) Diabolus (Chaotic Good blue/purple "cartoon devil" people from the Demiplane of Nightmares; weren't playable in BECMI, but got a 3e PC writeup)
I feel like this is designed to be Hella exclusive Like no-one can play mixed raced, or even have alternae equivalents... And I blame Skyrim for the Dragonborn thing getting popular
Thank you.
No Half-sies! That way lay draco-wolf-slug-taurs.
will you do a new introductory video on the human cultures of Mystara or a video on classes?
@Mr_Welch
3 жыл бұрын
Those are usually broken down by region. There's over 40 different cultures that I had listed, a bit much for one video without just making them Snippets
(Roughly 1 minute in) So, did the existence of the Frey & Freya-created half-elf nation of Eusdria get retconned?
So just everything is an elf?
Why ignore the wolven lupins from canon? Essentially, an ancestor form preserved by Saimpt Loup. (I mean the breed that Bruce himself created, not the 2e retcon)
@Mr_Welch

There's enough dog breeds that look like wolves to qualify for that appearance, early versions of lupin were emphatically not wolfmen though.

@@johnbalk6091 The elves generally want to be left alone. They don't cause trouble and the Grand Duke doesn't bother them. With their amazing not being seen powers it's not hard for the two groups to avoid each other
Could you detail the lizardy races available for playing? Thanks!

@@Mr_Welch Great! Thanks sir!
Quick question. I’m planning on running The Mines of Bloodstone. In your opinion, what races would you use to replace the Svifneblin and Duergar?
Nevermind the furries -- I wanna do a Lycanthrope (from : "Night Howlers") ;)
So, let me get this straight... You are trying to reboot Mystara because of all the different human cultures, but you leave in every single obscure race from the old setting, plus umpteen different kinds of furries? You do realize that you've just made every tavern setting and adventuring party into a gathering at a Dantooine space port, don't you?
@Mr_Welch

This video is not reflecting the book I wrote. This video covers all the races across the entirety of the setting. You're not going to see people mix Hollow World, Savage coast and Known World races for a variety of reasons
