Welcome to my parents' garden 🌿 Zone 5 garden tour

Erin's mom's homemade deer repellent:
5 eggs
1 tablespoon powered red cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon black pepper
Put all ingredients into a jug and add water to make 1 gallon. You can add a drop or two of dish soap to act as a surfactant, although my mom usually skips this. Original recipe says to further dilute the mixture with 4 parts water to every 1 part egg mixture, but my mom usually does half that. Shake it up very well before use. She punches holes in a spare lid (usually she uses an old laundry soap jug) and shakes it onto plants but you can also use a watering can.

Hey Erin! Love this sharing of your parents garden. A tip for your mom on the turkeys (bc we have lots in our yard here in TN) they probably ARE after the worms but they also like to roll in "dust bowls" to keep the bugs/ticks off. So two things she can do, she can buy corn and black oil bird seed, they will eat anything really but if she puts it in a place well away from the garden they will most likely go for that first and just toss it about in or near the woods no piles needed and 2 - if she can put a large pile of sandy dirt or mulching near a tree base (again not near something she likes) they will use it to take their dust bathes. They really like my mulch around my fruit trees, I keep replacing that mulch but they stay out of my gardens! Hope this helps :)

What a cool house! I love mid century architecture and can relate to the huge eves that make it difficult to plant along the house! While mine isn’t as mid century modern as their house, I love my 1957 ranch/rambler in the north Minneapolis suburbs. When we first bought it three years ago, I was excited that the front of our house faces SW because I thought I could plant almost anything there. Then I realized that thanks to the huge eves, it actually does not get any sun until nearly 1pm. Then when it doesn’t, it’s the scorching hot afternoon sun that reflects off of the stucco house! I’ve found it’s not enough sun for some sun plants to thrive, but then it’s too hot for a lot of things that can handle a little more shade. And I have to water a LOT, especially in the hottest parts of summer because even if it rains, it doesn’t get into the front bed because of the eves. So it’s been a challenging. After two full gardening seasons, Im still looking for perennials that will really thrive to finish filling in the back! I’ve definitely found things that I won’t plant there again including Cosmos, and Zinnias that’s I had there the first year, both of those actually died by the end of summer! Not sure if not enough sun, or too intense of sun in the afternoon! I will say that super hot area seems to maybe allow me to cheat a bit on zone hardiness. I have a non-hardy in my zone (4B) Mum that is coming back for the second Spring now, which makes me happy!

I'm sure Jumping Worms and Turkey Trouble is no laughing matter - but it sounds hilarious!! The Asarum Europaeum is my favourite ground cover too. I have a suggestion: how about planting those three pots up with some tall, lime green ferns - with the begonias around the edges? I think it would look good with something tall against the wall. Thanks to you and your parents for the tour! Ingela, Sweden

Oh my word, what a beautiful garden! I think the summer tour (that I would love to see!) could be at least an hour long.... yay😁🤞😅 I would love to see that garden in more detail, to get inspired in a garden design point of view. So to speak. (Sorry second language here) Thank you for sharing! 💚🌱🌻

I enjoyed this and am inspired by the multiple gardens in a relatively flat space, which is what I have (minus the beautiful lake 🙁😉). Thank you and thank your mom for us!

What a lovely garden; and the view of the lake from the bluff is wonderful. Thanks for the tour. I would love to see it in different seasons.

I can relate to the deer issue. I love hostas and the deer have taken a bite, but I too am managing. Your parents garden (yard) is amazing! By all mean revisit, lovely landscaping.
