Fun fact about the hats in Western movies if you look at the businessmen and politicians who wear hats in the movies you'll see them wearing the bowler hats while cowboys/bandits wear the Stetsons and/or bandanas.

  • @rjgaynor8

That always made me laugh. The cowboys wearing Stetsons was entirely marketing and has worked so well that Stetson is still riding on their name being used as the name for all cowboy hats. But if you look at historical photos you will find that fedoras, bowlers, and sombreros were the most commonly worn hats of the era. The overly wide brim of the “cowboy” hat made them impractical.

As a kid in the 1960s, I almost certainly saw the corpse of Elmer McCurdy at The Pike, an old amusement park in Long Beach, California. The Pike was closed down after the 1971 Sylmar earthquake caused the park more damage than it was worth to fix it. After that, it was only used as a film set.

In one of my favorite college classes the prof made an observation that blew my mind. American obsession with both Westerns and Science-Fiction are born out of the "frontier-ism" tradition from which America came. It's right there in Star Trek's intro too, "Space, the final frontier." Fun stuff.

It's also probably a big part of why fantasy and sci-fi stories have become so popular over the years. The feeling of encountering the unknown, of there being stuff to explore and new sights to see, those are ingrained in human beings to our core. As the world has become more connected and less and less exists to explore, it makes sense that we'd engross ourselves in the thought of the older frontiers or in fictional new ones.

What really seals the fate of the wild west not being as lawless as people think is that the there was a federal inquiry into the shootout at the OK Corral. The back and forth between the Earps and the Clantons had been going on for a while. The inquiry determined that while the Earps were justified in their use of force there were probably ways they could have deescalated the situation before it resulted in the incident.

Having a gun in the city is so different than having one in the country. In places like Alaska, with vast wild places n lots of large wild animals, guns are carried by everyone, and are a survival necessity. Also, if you run into bad people in the country, often there isn't going to be anyone around to help you. You can only defend yourself or no one will defend you. City life is so different. The whole culture is different, n sometimes different laws are needed.

This story about the aliens was kind of cool. I live in Lodi, California, and have never heard this story before. Just an FYI, Simon, the town is pronounced as Lode-Eye. I know an I at the end of the word usually has the long e sound, but not in this case. Lodi was founded by the Japanese and the Germans. So that might be the reason the towns name is pronounced that way.

Remember that all “far and wild west” it was Spain. Even the cowboys boots are spanish, born jn Andalucia region. The original manufacturer plant is located close to El Rocio city. We call “camperas”. The spanish soldiers used it in the SXVII wars in Italy, France, Holand, and when we invaded for few weeks England.

The fight at the ok coral was really a fight between TWO organized crime groups. The Cowboys and the Earps. Both groups wanted to run crimes in Tombstone Arizona. I find it hilarious that people still think Wyatt Earp was a good guy. He was a pimp, crook, cheat, robber and lowlife. He is only thought to be a good guy because he killed anyone that opposed he was an outlaw. He was 100% an outlaw. Its just like saying the Bloods or the Crips are good guys.

Its not the gun that kills, its the person holding it. Humans have killed each in the millions long before guns were invented. Swords, spears and arrows racked up more body counts than guns have. My point is, it is mankind that always finds a way to kill. We must advance as a culture and society to end, or at least limit, the killing.

It was written because the Founding Fathers didn't want a professional standing army. They thought a general with too much power and support of the military could overthrow the government. So, it is ironic that all the man babies who love their 2A are also pro military. You literally can't be both if you go with the original intent of the amendment.
