I think the trouble with some of these is similar to the problem D&D dungeon masters can face. You dont want the puzzle to be so easy that they know the answer before you finish the riddle because then you think it wont be satisfying for anyone. But then your group spends an hour trying to figure it out because youve made it to clever or based on information that only you have. So you try and make something easier like giving the classic riddle of the Sphinx, but because you also mentioned the entrance had 10 pillars, one of which has crumbled, they get distracted by unimportant information and chase what amounts to a red herring all night. How do you make the puzzles actually easy enough to be solved by the common man without also just publishing a map with latitude and longitude and a sign posted over the treasure in blinking neon red x's?
There is one MAJOR PROBLEM with the "rusty" owl... Who would accidentally dig up a bronze owl and then consider burying a FAKE rusty owl in its place?

Exactly it was clearly a bronze coloured owl and wasn't actually made of bronze so after 30 odd years is just a rusty bird

My thoughts exactly! Maybe they stumbled upon it accidently first, but then got aware of the hunt. Or just found it because of the hunt.

If you watch Season 6 episode 8 of expedition unknown, they explain that a fake owl was buried, once found you can then exchange it for the real one.
It seems unlikely that somebody would replace a bronze owl with a rusty iron one. It seems more likely that the original owl wasn't really bronze in the first place.

A friend of mine set up a whole dragon ball z geocache scenario that he and his girlfriend sought out over several months. When they uncovered the last one he proposed to her. Very sweet!
I don’t know if this is a true saying or where it came from but I’ve always said “if your puzzle is so convoluted and so random that only insider information could ever solve it, then you didn’t make a puzzle, you made a stupid lock”

I might have to find that last treasure. CHARIZARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love The Secret. Got really into the key that people think is in Houston(where I live). I still regularly visit the few suspected locations in the city. Hope it’s not underneath the zoo, because I don’t think they’d ok digging.

Great vid. Are there any treasure hunts based here in Australia? There seems to be many mysteries, codes and treasures found and unfound in the USA?
The Secret. The picture with the mask and the clock. Represents New Orleans. My guess is the key is either somewhere in or around Preservation Hall -or- at Storyland somewhere around Captain Hook’s pirate ship.

This video made my brain hurt. And I think I may have lost a few IQ points in the process.
I sincerely hope that the second owl was not hidden in the same place as the first. If it was, how do we know for sure that whoever found the first one isn't already in possession of its replacement?
Where do these authors come up with these gigantic treasures that they don't want to keep for themselves?
Has anyone heard if QI the quiz from the UK in the 80-90s? (not related to bbc qi series) , a trial video competition sorting vid clips into information to answers etc. In the late 80s i think it was, me and the mrs (she was a PA to a famous journalist) got invited to its launch in a fancy London night spot Met Tony Robinson (Baldrick) who was hosting it. Very difficult to suss out the video answers but we got passed a few levels, got a few t shirts as prizes. I wonder what happened to it?
Bah, thought i got here 1st. No treasure for me😢
