Weird and Wonderful Adventures at the Very Top of Scotland

Who would travel 550 miles to see a bus stop? I think you know who...
Welcome to my trip to the very top of the UK, the island of Unst, in Shetland. You can't go much further north than this without falling into the Atlantic, and one of its settlements, Baltasound, is home to a wonderfully weird little bus stop. So join me to see if I can make it there and back in one piece!
My itinerary and prices:
Mon 4th Stonehaven-Aberdeen (train) £6.30 single
Mon 4th Aberdeen-Lerwick (ferry) £72.00 return*
Tue 5th Lerwick-Toft (bus) £3.60 single
Tue 5th Toft-Ulsta (ferry) £6.20 return (inc next ferry)
Tue 5th Ulster-Gutcher (bus) £3.40?
Tue 5th Gutcher-Belmont (ferry) included in above ferry fare
Tue 5th Belmont-Baltasound (bus) £2.00
Tue 5th Overnight, Baltasound Hotel (single room cabin) £85
And then on Wednesday to Thursday morning, all of the above in reverse!
*there were ferry supplements for seats/pods - I'll go into this more in next week's Northlink video
Filmed Monday 4th - Thursday 7th July 2022

As someone who lives in Shetland, may I complement Steve on an extraordinarily accurate description of the journey. The bus stop needs to be comfortable - there's only one bus a day according to the timetable! He was lucky to get one hour's sleep in the 'pods' - they are dire!

Steve, I don't know what scares me more this video or all the ones I watch from Japan. The railway/bus systems are so convoluted. That bus stop was something! Those pastries and the honor system are so sweet. Can I just say that I love the word "anonst"? I'm also a fan of "fratchity". An expression my Scots grandad used for a disagreeable person. Unst sounds very Viking-y

Dear Steve, thanks for an excellent video. Very nostalgic for us as we lived in Unst 50 years ago. In fact the timber house nearest to the bus shelter was built for us by a Shetland Building Company. No roll on roll off ferries in those days. Small passenger ferry to Yell, two bus journeys across yell and then an even smaller passenger ferry to Unst. Our furniture came up in a British Rail container on the St Clair to Lerwick and then on the Earl of Zetland to Unst. By the time we left for family reasons in 1976 the inter island roll on roll off ferries were running, but we took our furniture back to the Scottish mainland in a Transit Luton van which had to be lifted onto the St. Clair. An interesting feeling watching all your worldly possessions being lifted up, just hoping the slings under the wheels did not break under the strain.

Color me just a tad odd but this happens to be one of my favorite videos. I am one for the journey not so much the destination. I think that's a bit odd because most people have a place they are going to see. And I love, love, love that bus stop! Well worth the trip. I have to admit that these excursions would not be quite so much fun if it were not for your narrations. Shetland is probably one of my favorite shows ever. If the weather on Shetland is as we saw it with you then that's where I need to be. I love that kind of weather. I have gone through the episodes I don't know how many times and I'm thinking about getting to where I can see them again. Say hi to Alicja for me. Be well, stay safe, journey lots, love from Texas.

When I went to Orkney a month ago one of the things I looked at was travelling by bus to the main historical sites but they didn’t stop at all of them. If you missed a bus you’d wait hours for the next. But I’m glad you did this journey. Really looking forward to the next few instalments. If you go to Orkney again I can thoroughly recommend The Orkney Hotel in Kirkwall.

Absolutely loved it ❤️. it's a journey I wouldn't mind doing myself except for the upright on the ferry. I do love a "wee" bit of comfort afforded by a horizontal position of a bed even a narrow bunk. You do "walk a hundred miles" for the love of sharing your travel passion with us. As always, thanks a bunch for a great adventure.

Was that the building as used in the program "Shetland" as the police station?, when that series screened here in Australia I was an addict loved the show and the views that went with it. Thanks for taking me along on another great journey, stay safe and cheers.

The oil boom in Shetland brought in some improvements to the local infrastructure. An obvious one is that the roads are pretty good. Not so obvious is that they built several indoor swimming pools, so that Shetland must have the highest number of pools per head of the population in the UK. Although it would have been horrendously expensive, I was surprised that they never built bridges or causeways between the Shetland Mainland, Yell and Unst. When I went to that café in Unst shown at 13:57, the lady behind the counter said that visitors in cars often failed to grasp that it was nearly 60 miles (and two ferries) from Lerwick to Baltasound and the journey would take maybe twice as long as they thought.

I did the trip by public transport, and Bobby’s Bust Stop was high on the agenda. Public Transport is the best way to see the islands and the best way to guarantee a spot on the ferries. Not taking the car saves a fortune on the crossing from Aberdeen too. You are spot on about the busses and ferries being in sync, and SO cheap compared to the rest of the UK! I love Unst but I do worry that it’s unique place in the world might change should the spaceport go ahead. I’m glad I’ve seen it before any more development changes it’s character, I found that a single cruise ship visiting can take away the peace and quiet. Keep ‘em coming Steve 👍
