Flatirons Tuning Tech Tip - Weight Savings: The Modification that improves everything
If you are working on improving your cars performance and making it faster, then saving weight will always be on your mind. From taking unnecessary things off the car to replacing other components with lighter ones, every pound you save will add up, and make a big difference.
This is one of the things that we are working on with our 2003 WRX Project car right now, and we put this video together to give some insight to a couple of the components that we picked.
Always remember:
Simplify and add lightness - Colin Chapman

    Oswald is good stuff. I went the cheap route and used a JDM bumper beam, but it came with the front clip I bought so I figured why not. Keep up the good work guys and thanks for doing what you are doing here.

    I found the harley lithium batteries to be my go to 500cca and a really great built in BMS so it's like a Normal battery. I'm on year 3 of abusing it second hand from a friend at a dealership and it's fine except one odd flaw it will randomly kill itself with BMS balancing. Sometimes it sits for 1 week and some change and it just has no juice at all meaning the bms said hell no. I put it on a dumb trickle charger or a jump 😂 and shes fine other times it sits for a month or two and starts perfectly. Havent noticed a pattern to it at all but it's never in less than a week after driving.

    I was at the junk yard this weekend and saw that the 2002 forester has aluminum crash bars. Naturally I pulled them off assuming they fit my 02 wrx. I have yet to confirm fitment.

    I have an 02 WRX, I have a Carbing SubFrame Brace. I cant install it because my aftermarket downpipe hangs to low and isnt tucked-up into the chassis like the stock one I guess. I have to have 2 inches cut off my downpipe and welded back together. :(

    Sorry to hear that. Sometimes when you throw together a bunch of parts from different manufactures, a little re-working and massaging is required. Hopefully you can get all of the parts to work together!

    any alternatives in 2022 for bumper beams? it appears Oswald is no longer making products. I believe the JDM ones are a bit lighter. any other options?

  • @FlatironsTuning

    @FlatironsTuning

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your question. Not that we know of currently. The JDM beams are lighter, but have basically no structure. It puts you at a risk of much more damage from any impact, so we don't typically recommend them. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

    JDM front bumper beams is option is too

  • @FlatironsTuning

    @FlatironsTuning

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comment. That is true. However, it is worth mentioning that the JDM beams offer basically no structure to the car, so you can be sacrificing a little bit of chassis rigidity, and in a worst case scenario of a front impact could cause a lot more damage. The Oswald beams offer a nice balance between the extremes of the USDM vs. JDM bumper beams. Thanks for watching!

    Being that weight savings in a racecar is key, would the removal of non-essential engine parts be part of this process, as well? I know a/c is non-essential to a build, so is it possible to remove that unit's components without compromising the engine's reliability? I figure removing those parts and finding a new belt (sometimes adding or moving a pulley to maintain belt drive) would be possible, yes? I'm not familiar with the flat engines, but I'm sure this could work for inline engines, as well with v-pattern engines.

  • @FlatironsTuning

    @FlatironsTuning

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your question. This is absolutely possible on Subaru engines. the A/C compressor actually has a separate belt, so it is pretty darn easy to remove. For a race-car, you definitely want to remove anything that you don't need. Saving weight is the best way to improve every function of your car. Thanks for watching!
