WEG helps to generate hydro-electricity for Windsor Castle

A project delivered by Southeast Power Engineering has seen a mini power station being installed on the River Thames at Romney weir to produce electricity sustainably using environmentally friendly water driven Archimedes screw generators. The completed design features two WEG W22 Premium Efficiency IE3 generators being driven by the screws via a gearbox to produce electricity which now powers Windsor Castle.

    This is a very well thought out site, it has means for fish and eel to get to the water ahead of the weirs. Even at high water in the downstream side, generating capacity is good. This is the way forward.

    The WEG W22 is an asyncronous induction motor. Simply running it as a generator it can't possibly achieve 96% efficiency? So are they using a special PM rotor, i.e. running it as a syncronous PM generator ??

    You don't, the weight of the water on the fins is basically irrelevant and its not ever going to be the point of failure since the shape of a welded spiral around such a wide cylinder in such a tight circle will give it all the rigidity it needs, I dont imagine you'd ever lose any sleep using 4mm, any more than that and you could power it with just your fabricators tears

    The machines were £350k each. You might not need such big ones?

    @@David-pk9be It generates 300kW and will pay itself back in 6 years: 8p * 300 * 24 = £380 a day in income * 6 years = around £350k as you said. For a ranch with a high degree of automation a 10kW screw is still more than you possible can use and it will still pay itself back in 10 years if you use only 100kWh/day likely sooner as a 10kW screw can be easily installed with an excavator, after which it will just generate you funny money.

    @@stephenauty2402 Not rocket science to have a machine shop make an Arhimedes screw. Some science papers must have been made to size it according to your flow situation. Then give them specs or drawings. Not that different to make a screw for grain or sewage, so a machine shop would know how to make one from scratch.
