Hi Danielle….I too, like your mom struggle with bunnies eating my lilies, so growing in a pot works well for me. My favorite garden bed colors are pink, purple/blue with white. However, there are so many beautiful orange flowers, that a few years ago, I changed one small backyard bed to orange. The flowers look so pretty next to a large blue spruce. Thank you for sharing these weekly Saturday garden tours with us. Your gardens look beautiful!

I did plant some star blazer bulbs in back of border in my 4 ft high beds but guess what…squirrels moved them around. Now I might need to move them mid growth. Uggggggg. Loving this garden tour & talk 😊 You have really inspired me with having plants in pots amongst your borders as mine is a single relatively small border with Spring bulbs that I love and do not want to dig out so now that the foliage has died out, I can have summer plants in pots over them starting with my first ever Nicotiana Alata for their delicious evening fragrance. I wasn't a big fan of orange in borders until my very first Ballerina Tulips bloomed this Spring and brought such presence & Joy that I will repeat the experience with both Tulips and later summer plants & bulbs. Your Lilies are so beautiful and no wonder that your bouquets are selling well. I was a bit surprised by your comment referring to your neighbours selling cut flowers too ( Sunflowers ) as it isn't usual in Britain for people to sell their garden flowers ? I have noticed a beautiful carriage passing by your property at times, is this a very historic and touristic area you live in ? Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge of plants and beautiful garden with us ! Lots of Love from London UK 💚

Thank you for always sharing the why behind your what. Lots of garden channels show us how, but few seem as intentional in thinking as yours is. This is my first year growing in a new-to-me garden. I planted tulips last fall that were devoured by hungry bunnies in early spring. I have decided to grow my tulips in pots for next year for this reason. I would also love to have more lilies dotted around and think growing in pots will be an ideal solution.

Beautiful and so cheerful as usual. I wanted to tell you about a happy accident. In one of your blogs you've mentioned growing roses again. I'm in Southern California, but surprisingly we've now just barely reach 80degrees. Anyway, I've been growing tomatoes near some of my roses. The tomatoes decided to use the rose as a help to climb. The roses have never looked better. No bugs Beautiful blooms without getting burned. My other roses are getting insect and heat damage. This was an accident, but a welcome one. In fact my neighbor thought I was growing a new plant with roses and tomatoes. 😅

Planning with lilies in a pot is genius and your arrangement looks great. I haven't decided what colors I like best in a summer garden. I know I like spring gardens best, but I think I just need to find my way through the summer and fall selection through trial and error. I have to say my favorite part of your walk this time was the hydrangea room; I really like the look of the pinks and how the blooms are fading into other shades. I like the pinnacle taken out, but I think it's because I prefer the smooth top. Anyway, I found the view of the hydrangea room beautiful, while calm and soothing. You know, now that I think about it, it's also the repeated shape of the smooth tops that reminds me of rolling hills or clouds and a pinnacle does disrupt the shape (and color) energy there, imho.

Hope your weekend has gone well. The Sun patients are worth it and will continually have flowers like their shade cousins. They are water hungry though. If it gets hot and you miss watering after a couple of days, they may flop/ wilt. They spring right back though. Being in the ground may prevent that though.....my experience is in the pot only. There is a large variety of this annual, all have done well for me.... definitely do well in sun, like the name says. I, like you've discovered, love the warm colors mixed with the pastels. Enjoy those Sun patients!

Lilies in pots placed in the garden! What a great idea! My lilies tend to get lost amongst the faster growing perennials & shrubs, not being noticed until they actually bloom. this means I run the risk of stepping on them early in the season, harming their production. Pots would be the perfect solution. II'm moving towards a pollinator & landscape garden (rather a true cutting garden,) so like you have embraced the hotter colors of yellow & orange. It's something that just seemed to happen in following the pollinator perennial interest & I'm loving it!! Thanks Danielle, always....

Hello Danielle. Welcome to zone 7. The only thing constant is change. Zone 7b 8a Georgia, hot and humid. SunPatien Electric Orange in their Compact series, and this clear orange has the best flower color fastness in full sun than other colors. ONE plant in a 5gallon pot. A rich soil like HappyFrog, and step back, as it gets huge in the heat of summer. Even in a black pot it LOVES the heat, but not dry. They bounce back well from a wilt episode however. In a bright shade they can take the heat of paved surfaces and house walls. In the Southest, the mid day sun is a bit too intense, but earlier and later sun is good and better flowering. They bloom into, and even through, the winter in Florida. They never stop blooming. Larger pots overwinter better without drying out . Three series. Compact, Spreading, and Vigorous. Many colors in each series. Vigorous are quite tall. Look for a beautiful orchid purple. Look for Compact 'Fire', an impressive glowing red. Mine over wintered on a sun porch, but the deer ate them last month ! Grrrrrrr.

I don’t have gardens to tour here in southern Ohio and sometimes planting things I’m attracted to are much like you said about planting bulbs…only harder to move. 😂 I have no idea what they look like mature and in situ. Although, I tend to buy small and grow on a year in pots, it still doesn’t express their potential well. I’ve got a fair amount of cuttings going. Especially, thyme and Incrediballs. Still unsure how the blush/pink blooms will look once they fade. Loving your Invincibell Sprit 2’s. Good teaser for a loud hydrangea surprise…I have no idea what it could be. 😂

I planted my Drops of Jupiter the same week you planted yours. I’m so jealous to see yours filling out and looking great😁 Mine are almost all dead or dying. Maybe it was just too late to plant here in south Alabama--about 50 m north of the Gulf Coast. The leaves all started turning brown around the edges and falling off. I even tried to shield from the mid-day sun with umbrellas during a bad heat wave a few weeks ago--I know the neighbors probably got a kick out of that sight🤓 But every day has been so hot here as always July and August. The heat index was 103 yesterday. Has anyone else in my zone had success with the ornamental oregano? Maybe they got root rot? I don’t think I overwatered but maybe? They just looked so wilt-y after even one day of no rain. Then we got a week or so of daily rain, which just seemed to speed up the leaves dropping off. My soil is pretty clay-y. Probably contributed as well🙁

  • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm

    @NorthlawnFlowerFarm

Hey friend! Do you think the clay soil could be holding onto the moisture and causing root rot? Any trouble with other plants in that area? I planted hydrangeas and boxwoods at my brother in laws in VA a few years ago. They have the red clay but I didn’t have any experience working in that type of soil and didn’t amend it. Many of the shrubs died within just a few weeks. It looked similar to what you’re describing. Almost like the plants had been set on fire. Anyway, not my area of expertise but when you said clay soil it reminded me of that experience.

I believe they will be really great in your area and YES they can take the heat and sun! I have them in full sun and they do wilt usually every afternoon because of the sun beating on them all day but In your area they should be really happy! They grow and get really sturdy really fast, I actually planted 2 little tiny ones in a window box and they popped so quick and were spilling over the window box it was beautiful!! I eventually made the mistake of putting too much fertilizer in my watering can and killed those but they are fantastic! Can’t wait to see yours mature and grow!

The Lillie's are beautiful and great idea to add the Sun Patients...the colors gives a touch of tropic vibe. My SP's do great in sun but stay thristy in my now 8a, zone, I cant beleive it, I've been 7a/b for so long.😮 I could spend all day browsing your beautiful garden, all the beautiful types and combinations of flowers. I love all the colors, but my faves are shades of purple and pinks to fushias, white, green and of course the warm happy colors yellow and orange...guess that's all of them. 🌈 😅 Great suggestion on planting fall bulbs in pots. You're so right about figuring out where to plant, and if they'll go with the rest of the area, think I'm gonna try it too. Thanks as always for continuing to give us the weekly walk and talks...luv them! ❤️🌸🌹🌷🌼🦋🐞🐝😍🌱🌿🪴

I am a landscape architect in the NC mountains, similar climate to yours, and I have used thousands of Sunpatiens in the direct sun with great success. They do not like to dry out.

Beautiful! Could you show us your instant hedge that you planted a while ago along the street in combination with the hummingbird metal screens? I'd love to see how high they have grown and how the area looks

Try using Elfin Thyme for the cracks between the stones....it is very short and dense and so easy to walk on.

I really like orange as a focal flower. The sunset orange ones by the library are beautiful. Too much yellow, gold, orange, brown, and green looks retro (70’s color palette), so I wouldn’t use those as the main color palette unless you’re going for a rad groovy vibe.

You're Saving Grace Dahlias are beautiful. Maybe you can talk about how you handle the tubers in the fall. I dont have luck with them and purchase the tubers each spring.

I have a love/hate relationship with sunpatients…I have to water them twice daily or they shrivel up. I do like the colors offered. Maybe you’ll have better luck. I’m in southern Illinois, zone 6b/7a.

I garden in Zone 8a and I love watching your tours. I noticed you mentioned you have a Cyptomeria and it's a nice size. I just purchased two of them and have them still in pots from the nursery. How old are yours and how you took care of them. I pray that mine will be alright in this SC heat 🔥. We'll, thank you for your garden tour, it was beautiful, especially the Hydrangeas. ❤❤❤

Hi! I think it’s 5 years old. Around year 3 it really took off. It’s been self sufficient here in central PA. It does drop older branches often which can be quite messy. That didn’t start happening until this year.

I've grown sun impatient in both full sun and part shade. The only problem I've had is my dog Casey uses them as his toilet from time to time.
