I absolutely love Allyson’s ‘naturalistic’ philosophy. I think she is one of my kindreds when it comes to propagation and encouraging what works. What a treasure! You have to go back to her garden periodically so we can see how it progresses…. Thanks for continuing to share your subscribers’ spaces.

Allyson! I’m so impressed, you planted a large tree right away, the tomato cages are ingenious, the shed is a dream, the wagons are so sweet, the arches add vertical height, you are a practical, go for it gardener. It’s a lovely property. 🇨🇦

Yes, 'resourceful' describes Allyson and her garden perfectly. I especially love that she is fearless, and therefore successful, in her attempts at gardening and building. She designed and made her own tomato cages that will last forever! - did everyone hear that? OMGoodness, the potting shed. I love the fact that it is simple in design and style as that equates to beauty. The story of the windows - I'm sure they were in rough shape but look how beautiful she restored them. Great tour, Janey.

OMG! A person who uses my "ocean sound" trick to ignore traffic noise! I thought I was the only one! Allyson is lucky to have had the chance to learn all this hands on stuff from her dad. I am afraid that I am all thumbs and clueless when it comes to building something. I love her dad's attitude about it. I always try to reuse what I have before buying. It really helps the budget. As a Christmas present, my husband built an adorable Little Library out of a birdbath base whose top was knocked off and broken by some rowdy raccoons, the wood box was made from pices of random lumber he found under the house that was going to get trashed, and my daughter painted a charming design on it, and I absolutely LOVE it! Btw, Harry is ADORABLE!🥰

Allyson, you are soooo brilliant! That painted floor in your amazing shed! those windows! that dry sink! those wagons! your beautiful white picket fences and archways, the firepit area, it's all so amazing! But most of all your sheer fearlessness with plants. That courage to dig it up and move it, chop it in half and make two plants from one and then "see what happens". What a pleasure to meet you and visit your garden. Thank you Janey for these garden visits, they're amazing!

Changing my thinking has helped me tremendously and allowed me to find more joy in my garden.😊💚

Oh my goodness, you can definitely divide Mexican petunia. Dig out a chunk and move it. I have moved it all over my yard for years. I’m in the south zone eight and if I don’t keep an eye on it, it will take over here. I have a spot where I don’t want it anymore. I mow it every week, and it pops up again by the next week I have given a ton of it away. It has woody stems, and I cut it back every fall. 🌸

It’s funny, when you guys talked about Kellogg soil, Epic Gardening did soil comparisons and it faired the worst. I switched to it last year and have had terrible results, kept wondering what was going on, and think it’s because it has too much wood not broken down yet. I’m going to use my extra bags as mulch, great idea!

We'll try next year. I love her two white arbors. Did she build them? After going thru the white arbors it's another world. Wow. Did she use stencil on the floor of her shed? Great idea for the tomato cages, wash tub, little wagons, making obelisks from vines, using cement blocks as risers.

In answer to your question, Mexican perennials (Ruellia simplex) are very easy to multiply from cuttings taken in late summer or fall and over-wintered in an unheated greenhouse. In addition, the rhizomes can be divided when you tidy up/cut back plants that survive winter; they are tender perennials that often survive our Zone 9b/Davis, CA winters. I love these plants for their shiny, dark green foliage and beautiful 1" purple flowers that bloom from June to late fall with no need for dead-heading.
