They should've said, "And here now with his take on the death of O.J. Simpson... Norm McDonald" then cut to a compilation of old clips of Norm roasting O.J. for five minutes straight.

I believe he got removed from Weekend Update because of the O.J. jokes. He got fired along with Chris Rock, David Spade, Adam Sandler, and Chris Farley because Lorne was cleaning house and they fired all the stand-ups including Norm.
