Weekend thrift store adventure

A trip to two of the thrift stores where I get a lot of my stuff from. A few goodies found on Saturday, and a look inside the store on Sunday.

I recently picked up a VTech "I.Q. Unlimited" kiddie computer, which is actually a surprisingly full-fledged Z80-based computer with video output, parallel printer port, word processor & spreadsheet applications, and even BASIC. Its keyboard also looks like the IIc but adds a numeric keypad. I'll have a video on it soon.

Man, your thrift stores are loaded with some good stuff. I'm lucky to find even a decent keyboard in mine, let alone cool things like TV tuners.

Seeing you pass on an old computer at a thrift store was shocking to me, as old computers don't exist at my thrift stores and so I'd immediately buy any computer that didn't cost a fortune. But I'm sure you've got plenty!

+LOLZpersonok I have an awesome thrift store near me... they ALWAYS have old computers/monitors/mice/keyboards and sell them off for under $10 NZD. Nearly always working.

+Niall Asher None of the thrift stores I've ever visited carried computers while I was there. They regularly have computer monitors and peripherals, but never the computers themselves. It seems weird to me considering the fact that Roadgeek visits a Value Village which does carry computers, yet none of the Value Village stores I go to seem to. I don't know if it's a policy they have in Canada, if there are any laws in place here which prevent them from selling computers or if people simply don't donate computers to thrift shops. Either way, I've had to rely on classified ads to get a hold of all my older PCs.

It's very interesting to see an american thrift store on the inside like this, it's almost exactly the same as the ones in the netherlands except bigger and slightly different brands. But generally people do away with the same stuff. In Amsterdam some thrift stores stock good stuff because rich guys in the city center throw out their stuff too.

You guys have some unique items at your thrift shops. I really like that "Accu-Spell" word processor system. Some other items you showed are in typical thrift shop "working" condition. The past several times I've been to my local Goodwill store, I always go in with high ambitions and leave with nothing due to there being a good reason the previous owners didn't want the stuff.

It was strange to see a V6 engined car (The Citation if i remember it from the video) with a 4 speed manual transmission, in Europe only very old and low powered cars had those. Strange choice for a high powered car. But most of the european cars you see in that book are alive and well here, well many of them will go to eastern Europe for us to buy. They still run pretty well. My second car is a 89' Plymouth Laser RS and it's still working. :D That thing is older than me.

If your area doesn't have over the air Analog TV transmissions, you can use the WinTV to digitize VHS tapes. The one I had was able to record HuffYUV lossless video even from Macrovision-encoded tapes. And you can do a circuit board modification which will make it into a LF/VLF SDR sampler.

Did the store have the whole IBM aptiva computer, or only the part that you showed?

I wish we had thrift shops like that here... Also its very nice to see an American driving a car with a normal manual gearbox.

Nice scores! That thermometer / hygrometer is really gonna come in handy, assuming it's accurate. So will the ground loop isolator! I'm very surprised you didn't get the video editor or the vintage computer though. My thrift stores rarely have good items like that. The occasional gem will appear, but mostly it's all crap, but at least there's always new items every time I go. Was this a particularly good day at your thrift store, or does it always have a lot of good stuff?

I don't know. Maybe you can see the price tag in the video.
