Weave Along with Elewys, Ep. 34: Hallstatt 186

Фильм және анимация

How to weave a gorgeous tablet weaving pattern from 500 BC Austria. Several pieces of tablet weaving were found in a salt mine in Austria and have been recreated by expert tablet weavers. I will show you how easy it is to re-create this pattern.
If you want to use swivels to accommodate the twist, cards numbered 7, 8, 10 and 11 need the swivels (and border cards).
For more history, see • Weave Along with Elewy...
The patterns I create or find on Pinterest are pinned to my board here: / elewys . I will also post it on my blog, which can be found at ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/ and will be available after the video goes live.
In this video, I'm using Schacht cards, which can be found at Yarn.com, thewoolery.com, Paradise Fibers or Schachtspindle.com. If you would like wooden cards, I have found some nice ones at www.etsy.com/shop/VytuVatu along with several other treasures for your weaving pleasures!

Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator (TDD):
* jamespbarrett.github.io/table...
* How to use TDD: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmPy6... which will walk you through the many great features of this software.
Yarns:
* Jagger Spun wool/silk blend.
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* Maurice Brassard 8/2 cotton, which I purchased at woolery.com. It comes in 81 different colors and is really lovely to work with.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors. New web site! www.eowyndewever.com
* Pearl cotton, size 8 or size 10 (or even 12, if you love to work with fine stuff), which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:1806753, though I find that they are a bit thicker than I prefer.) Also, 1 mm thick cards can be found at www.thingiverse.com/thing:673389, or thing:4043270.
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

    I'm quite new to weaving, but thought I could mention two Norwegian wools I've tried so far if anyone is interested.. With a long tradition of tablet weaving we have yarns of fairly good quality. Some shedding of fibre, but no breakage using 10/2 and 8,5/2 yarns. As YT isn't fond of links (which I remembered after posting my first long post that didn't show up... sigh), I'll put down the names for googling; including the few stores I found that carries the brands. Not the specific types I've used, but perhaps they can get them? But what is available might be suitable for weaving, I'm not sure. First is Huldra from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. I've found three stores in North America who has this brand: Norsk Fjord Fiber in the US, they have one tapestry yarn. The Knitting Loft in Canada carries 4 types, some I know is used for weaving. Wet Coast Wools also in Canada has 8 types. The second is Røros brodérgarn, which is for embroidery and weaving from Rauma Garn. Wall of Yarn is the only US shop I could find who carries the brand.

    I do not weave, but I do love watching/listening to your videos. You always tempt me to try this out, but I already have so much on my crafting plate - I don't know how I could squeeze in yet another craft. (Art, your work is lovely) I am curious - are you able to memorize your patterns after a few repeats or do you have to consult your pattern for the entire weaving? I can memorize much of my work (knitting/quilting), but not a 30+ row design! Again, beautiful work, thank you for sharing.

    So I tried some tablet waving like 4 years ago. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until knots started forming on the other side of the cards. Not the side with the pattern. But above where the cards are turning. I got a good run of about 8 inches or so. But after all the time for setup and that happening I felt completely defeated. You make it look easy! I hope to one day attempt again, its pretty awesome seeing those turns transform into a pattern. Just gotta figure out how to keep it knotting up behind the cards.

    Hi Elewys! I tend to be a fly on the wall but I do enjoy your videos. My stack of tablet woven bands is small but growing. :) Quick question, if I may: I am always tempted to get involved in the SCA, because so many of my interests intersect, but then I go to an event and become overwhelmed by the heraldry, class structure, and ritual (how will I remember all of it? How will I know who to curtsey to?). I just want to wear a late Saxon dress and spin and talk hearth cooking. How do you keep it all straight? And is it possible to participate without really doing too much of the court stuff? Thanks so much!

    Absolutely! You can participate as much or as little as you like. Reach out to your local chatelaine to learn the customs of your kingdom--there are differences from one to the next--and look into cooking and weaving guilds in your area. You will find many like-minded folks to chat with.

    I purchased a beautiful made-to-order standing inkle loom from Spriggs Creations (Etsy) at Christmas. I have not used it yet, being a little unsure about switching from a table inkle loom to a floor inkle loom. I had thought about sitting in a chair to use it, though it looks like you are standing up to weave on yours. Do you find this to be the most comfortable way? Is there a history behind these monster looms or are they just modern adaptations of the smaller ones?

    Tablet weaving and inkle weaving kind of fell out of fashion around the 14th or 15th century, which was replaced by lace and embroidery. Some of the Baltic and Scandinavian countries continued to use it in their folk costumes, so that would be a place to look for inspiration. Good luck!
