I’ve recently discovered the world of tablet weaving after a friend asked if I could make a woven belt for his renn faire garb. Your tutorials and historical knowledge have been a tremendous help in making learning a new craft less daunting and more enjoyable! I've been meaning to pick up another hobby! saw your Tablet Weaving for Absolute Beginner video ages ago! This seems doable!

I’m planning on getting myself a small loom and cards for my birthday, and this exactly what I’ve been looking for to get started. Thank you for including an absolutely first ever project. Unrelated, but there’s some folklore in England that’s remarkably similar to the fate of Oleg. The Legend of Grey Dolphin is about a man who killed his horse after being told it would kill him, then years later the man died from infection after kicking the same horse’s skull. The horse was named Grey Dolphin.

Beautiful pattern. I don’t have an Inkle loom and I’ve been using a back strap to learn the basics of band weaving. I’m about to attempt using my rigid loom so I can have longer yardage. I will use this pattern for my test.

I think you must have read my mind! I bought a 2nd hand inkle loom last weekend with plans to try out tablet weaving. I've currently warped it up to do a basic inkle band (To make sure I remember how to thread it up) but after that I think I'll give this pattern a go.

I would have to, at least, mark the edges of the cards so I could see which way is up. The tiny holes - no! Love this pattern. As a very new beginner I am able to see just how the pattern works. And it is rather sweet. Thank you for all you share. I have an Ashwood Inklette, and I'm finding weaving so addictive.

I was starting to get sore from bracing my little loom against my stomach while pressing the weft down with the shuttle, so I came to watch your latest weave-along to see if perhaps I was doing this wrong. The real difference between learning through text and watching an expert here, I've been applying far too much pressure with the shuttle! Thanks for illustrating the method here!

To keep the thread from falling into the gap of the tension peg I wrap a hair tie on the peg and the threads stay more centered.

The Teapot - it was down the street from my Grandparents, we drove by many times when I was growing up. Enjoyed the new video.

Trying this as a new to me craft, I found using a crochet hook to help thread the cards at a beginning helped, obviously I have sausage sized fingers😁

Hey Elewys! Love your vids. I've been using a different pattern generator and wanted to try the one you like, but the link to the TDD seems to be broken. Or is it invitation only? I'm not sure why it doesn't work for me. Also (I'm sorry, I'm finding myself being a PITA today!) I can't find the etsy seller you mentioned--but maybe they're on a break. Thanks again for all you do!

Thank you for posting these videos. Can you explain more sometime about flipping the cards from Z to S or vice versa? Like can you thread them all as S and then just flip some of them to be Z? But if you do that, doesn't that put some of the threads in the wrong position (like A not being at the front where it should be to start or whatever). Anyway, thanks to this video, I made my first band! I'm excited to learn with you :)

Flipping the cards *can* create lots of issues! Not just with the threads being in the wrong position or at the wrong angle, but ending up with the wrong color coming to the surface. Maybe I could do a video on "what happens if..."?

Silk (I recommend 20/2), wool, linen and horsehair (for wefts).

Is there a way to estimate how much weft a project needs so you don't run out of weft? It isone of the things i have been wondering that noone seems to mention. Thanks

I bet there is a really complex mathematical equation that could be devised.... I think you might be able to estimate based on the length of all the warp threads combined. 20 cards, 4 threads per card, 3 yards in length...240 yards? This is just a wild guess--don't bet the farm on that. If someone has figured out if this is a remotely accurate way to calculate, please let me know!

I got my first loom used at an SCA event. Schacht, Ashford and Beka make great looms that you can buy on Amazon or through a weaving store.

A crochet hook is a goodsend for fishing the thread through the narrow holes.

They're cute, very portable, and are great for short pieces of delicate weaving. Not so great if you want to weave yards of work.

Thank you hadn't got why the s z threading mattered, if you can just flip the card. It because flipping changes the colour order.

I'm going to toss another complication for Ladoga--the stress is on the first syllable. So LAH-doh-gah. Same for Staraya. I know it's tough when you don't speak the language--I've mangled many a word over the years!

Simple ones can be done in 5 or 6 hours. Others can take 12 or more to weave 3 1/2 yards.

Can you show more on how to get the tension right? I’m really struggling with that

Over 25 years ago I had a conversation with a woman who said that on her wedding day, her new mother-in-law lovingly told her "Now you can just call me 'MOM'!" --- as all the previous times she had been calling her by her married name. ---- In certain parts of the world, there are letters reversed from what [we] grew up writing and pronouncing. This woman had been used to the letters P and S in words in the order of 'sp'... like 'spoon, spaghetti, special', so, of COURSE she had trouble greeting her future mother-in-law Mrs. Apsit. (let that sink in a few ticks there)

In fact, that reminds me of this poor lady I met called Mrs. Crap. She made sure to have me pronounce it Crepe. Poor lady, and her poor husband😬 They were both super sweet, really.

Sorta unrelated-I have trouble keeping a cap on my head without it slipping off the back. Can you share the shape of your head wrap please?

I think this one is a large square folded into a triangle, so the bias edge is across my forehead. It allows me to tie it a bit tighter, and it grips onto my head. My hair is very smooth and slippery, so it will slide off throughout the day and have to be re-tied.

The threads become twisted as I turn the cards in the same direction. To untwist, you weave by turning the cards in the opposite direction. It will alter the pattern at the point where you change direction, but it is not very noticeable. Continue weaving in the reverse direction until the threads are twisted again, then change directions again. I hope that helps!
