10 Things To Do With Your Tablet Woven Bands

Фильм және анимация

This is a little deviation from the usual weaving videos--I have two looms with unfinished projects, so I will need a bit more time to finish those up before starting the next one!
The bonus pattern included in this video is available is on my blog: ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/2...

I am not sponsored by any company, but if any of you are interested to know the materials I use:
Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator:
* jamesba.github.io/tabletweave/
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.
Opening credits created by HL Aenor de Pessac / Rebekkah Shafer-Ross, 2020.
Opening Music by Jon Sayles; additional music: "Heavenly" by Aakash Gandhi.

Your instructions are wonderful, and I decided to watch this video just for fun. I thought you might be interested to know that I've found tablet weaving to be an excellent way to put the thrums from my loomed weaving to good use. I do a lot of my weaving with 8/2 cotton and keep a "thrum bag" in my crafts closet. When I have enough colours saved up, I hang tablet warp on my rigid heddle loom (it has a floor stand) and off I go! Like my grandmother used to say, "Waste not, want not."

You inspired me with your video on absolute beginners - I bought a loom, made some tablets and created my first ever wee strip of tablet woven braid yesterday! It’s pretty crap, mainly because I used some rather grabby wool I had for knitting/crochet, but your teaching was so clear and made it all so simple. Many many thanks to you for your videos, and for giving me further ideas now!

I just discovered your channel a few days ago by accident and I must say I was drawn in instantly! I am an ADD Crafter meaning I always have so many projects going at once and almost every new craft I see I want to try! I love it when you get to the point in the video where you are ready to end and you just grab scissors and snip across all those threads... SO SATISFYING 💞.

Curses! The dreaded ebay has inkle looms made relatively locally to me. Now to explain a new craft neeeeeeeeds to husband who looks with dismay at the fabric in the sewing room. If you ever get sick of weaving you could go into comedy. I have just started with the inkle. I planned to do tablets but decided to start with heddles. After 6 tries to get the warp in the pattern I wanted ( in my head) I finally started. Did a few inches and then a thread came undone. I couldn't get it to go back right so undid it all to start again. Finally got it going and have done about 12 inches but the first 10 inches are terrible . However I have learned quite a bit from my mistakes. I was not firm enough the beating the weft down for a start. Also the edges are uneven in tension but I can keep them straight. So I will work this to the end and then try another pattern. I will keep this one with all its flaws to compare with future work to see how I might have improved... Hope springs eternal.

Tablet weaving book recommendations.... Applesies and Fox Noses is probably my #1 go-to recommendation. It has period patterns and motifs, and starts with easier patterns and works its way through to difficult ones. Great way to learn as you go! Their pattern notations are different than the ones I use, which is why I usually recommend people use a pattern generator that they are familiar with to know exactly how cards are threaded, etc. A lot of other patterns I found on Pinterest. Look for my file of Historic Tablet Weaving at: www.pinterest.com/elewys/historic-tablet-weaving/. Most of them are period or have period motifs. As for other books, I'll have to look through my (limited) collection.

Hand woven bands are used in Norwegian traditional costumes and in the Sami culture. For the hair, holding the stockings up, as decorations and more. They are quite expensive. We also use bands as decorations on some traditional knitted sweaters. But the bands are usually machine made, handmade are to expensive.

Haha I got a kick out of your intro. I love the look of the pieces sewn onto clothing. I was especially excited about the silk woven piece. I’d love to see you make one of those in a video!

I don't do tablet weaving but I found a loom that you tie to doorknob and waist with (apparently) a beginner pattern started on it. I imagine sewing one around my bag or to a rucksack so that it creates loops to which I can tie smaller items with other belts. I also see a denim jacket or and shirts decorated with wide and narrow belts giving an artsy 3-D look. My loom is from Finland: many of their national costumes use them tied around the head, mostly to show that the woman is unmarried but in some married women also wear them. (Different regions have their own costumes and now there's one created for ex-pats)

This may be a silly question...is there a proper way to cut the woven bands if it a shorter length is needed than was woven? I would be afraid to snip it and have it self destruct!

If you're worried about unraveling, you can put a drop of Fray Check on the ends.

I'm learning to tablet weave so that I can make bag straps. I came across some pictures of American mountain man/long hunter haversacks that have woven straps with a short leather section with buckle for adjustability, and immediately wanted to make something like that. So far I've made a couple of very chunky bands using 3mm macrame cord (its what I had available). I'm quite enjoying it, once I get my 'loom' setup sorted properly I'm going to try with more traditional yarns- like your friend Steve, I immediately thought it would make a great pair of suspenders (though we call them braces here in the UK). Do get Steve to post a picture, I'd like to see how they turned out.

In the US, braces are what we put on teeth to straighten them...or on legs...or arm crutches. English is confusing, isn't it?

@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 I dated an American woman for three years- I quickly got sick of British people saying "You know they say pants instead of trousers." or "They call scones 'biscuits'". Especially the scones/biscuits thing, because having had both I can tell you they are not the same at all!

Oh, I know. I had the very good luck to visit the UK when I was in high school with a friend of mine who had relatives there. I also love the British Baking Show (Bake Off--still don't understand why they had to change the name in the US...). It seems to me that biscuits and cookies are still different--biscuits are supposed to snap? Cookies don't have to snap; they can be soft or chewy or snappy. But there are lots of words like that--muffins, jumpers (that's a different garment here, too), and the meaning of the word "fanny". But I digress...

I'm thinking of weaving a camera strap for my wife. Not sure on a pattern yet but the simpler the better. One question I have is how much, if any, does the warp length shrink during weaving? e.g. For every yard of finished length one should start with a warp of 1.1 yard? 1.2 yards?

  • @elewysoffinchingefeld3066

Great idea! Add 25% to the length of the finished item, plus the leader/ender bits.

I'm looking to get into tablet weaving! If I manage to produce some decent-looking stuff, it's going to be going on my saddle pads as decoration. And my horse's breastcollar. And let's be real, probably his halter too.
