How to Read Tablet Weaving Patterns

Tablet weaving (card weaving) patterns can be a challenge to decipher, and having so many different systems makes it even more difficult and confusing. Knowing how to read a pattern correctly lets you skip the most common threading errors and get straight to weaving beautiful patterns. I break down the most common pattern systems to help you learn how to decode many pattern styles.

I've been tablet weaving for a few years now. I find your explanations incredibly clear and helpful and a bit like dotting the i's and crossing the t's. Things fall into place and my knowledge and understanding has increased .immensely through watching this video just twice. Thank you so much.

Wonderfully helpful, Thank you, thank you. Wish I could like this more than once. I have been looking for a very long time to discover how to chart my own patterns of images that will be recognisable when woven (ladybug, my logo), and seeing the GTT makes the finished image easier to see, I want now to learn how to then translate a drawn image into the tablet threading. Would you please do a video to help me see how an image with 4 colours on most lines (tablets) would be turned into a tablet weaving pattern...or point me toward somewhere that already shows how?

@@impendinglooms Thank you! My experiments so far tell me I need to invent some way of minimising long loops when working an area with lots of the same colour in succession.

This is an excellent video. Thank you so much for your work. Also I have a question that maybe is not specific to the subject. I always use the GTT pattern, and I did a few years ago the same one you're showing on this video but I twist the cards. I don't remember if without twisting the cards I would have the same result but if it's not the case then the pattern is not showing you to twist the cards, right?

Some people and patterns flip the cards (so card slant / becomes \ ) instead of changing turn directions. This does the same thing of reversing the thread order and changing the twist direction. It’s just a different technique that does the same thing, and some weavers prefer it. If the pattern is not showing up, one of the most common mistakes is that the S Z or the \ / are mixed up. Flipping/twisting the cards can correct that easily in many patterns.

I have a video planned for that soon. The technique I'll be showing is called double turn double faced, and it is the same technique Linda Hendrickson uses in her books.

I’m planning a tutorial for the double turn double faced style of weaving she frequently uses. Thanks for the question! It made me realize I should show at least a couple different ways those patterns might be written. Linda Hendrickson has a PDF for sale on her website that goes into detail about her pattern instructions. I will need to get permission from her before sharing info about her copyrighted material. I may make a video tutorial on her method if she consents to it.
