Beginner Tablet Weaving: Getting Started with an Oseberg Variation

A step-by-step beginner video on how to set up a simple threaded-in tablet weaving pattern on the loom, read a pattern, and start weaving. Pause as needed at each step to weave along with this video.
Thanks for your patience, this video took a backseat for over a month due to several pet emergencies, then another couple of weeks sorting out technical difficulties exporting and uploading the video.
Learning Objectives:
-How to set up following a threading chart
-How to start weaving
-Follow a simple turning pattern
-Try different turning variations
This is my twist-neutral variation on the historical Oseberg band.

MATERIALS AND NOTES:
⭐️Loom-I’m using an inkle loom, but you could also use a backstrap loom, frame loom, or even a large frame.
⭐️Belt shuttle - can use a butter knife to beat and a bit of cardboard to hold weft.
⭐️Yarn-I recommend non-stretchy cotton in two light contrasting colors. Any size will do. The bigger your yarn, the bigger your finished band will be.
⭐️10 Cards/tablets-store bought or homemade are fine. I frequently use cards made from poker cards.
⭐️Warp spacers-I use popsicle sticks, but toothpicks, pencils, or pieces of stiff cardboard will also work.
⭐️Card holder-I use a knitting stitch holder, or a pencil or knitting needle with a rubber band will also work. I’ve also tied it with a piece of yarn if I need to, just to keep the cards from falling and twisting out of place.
⭐️Scissors

The cheering sound effect is totally awesome ! I think I need a recordable push button with cheering for every time I get a set of the threading done !

Thank you for telling us what we need to know as beginners. There's so much to know and why it is doing what it is doing

I've been tablet weaving for about 3 years now (yes, you can teach an old dog new tricks) 😂. I've learned a couple of things from this excellent beginner's video that i will put into practice on my next band. However, being a bit of a perfectionist, I could never allow bumpy edges so I'd chase out the twist, using fishing swivels. I'm sure our ancestors didn't mind bumps though. This is a nice design and you are a very good teacher, thank you.

I’m so pleased an experienced weaver also found this video helpful! Fishing swivels is a great option I often use, too. 👍😁

Hi there ! Thanks for the many variations in the video. How do you introduca a new weft tread when the shuttle is empty ?

I use both the old and new weft together for 2-3 picks, then just snip the tails lose to the edge.

Could you possibly highlight which pick you’re working with on the instructions on the corner? I feel like this would help me follow along better :) other then that thank you very much 😊

I have a video I just did on making heddles for plain weave inkle. How to set up the inkle warp is going to be filmed sometime very soon, probably within a month or so. In the meantime, Annie MacHale recently put out a new video on inkle setup. Her advice is always great.
