    While I don't claim to be a DR/Sosua expert, I've been there around 20 times since 2012. I've never felt unsafe walking the streets of Sosua. I've become familiar with the various street hustles. When I walk the streets I do not lock eye gaze with any of the vendors/beggars/motoconcho drug dealers and "no gracias" or "no tengo dinero" is something I say often while not breaking the pace of my stroll. I am polite, courteous and gracious with everyone I interact with. I think your "vibe" has a lot to do with how smoothly things go for you.

    Mr. T. This is such valuable information. I will be retiring in 2020, and I have contacted you before. I want to live in DR because of my love of baseball I lived in San Pedro Sula, Honduras where crime is really bad. I like the way you emphasize being calm and good character. I find being myself and being friendly and not making enemies is the best defense. You have to make friends carefully. But if you make a few really good friends locally, it REALLY enhances avoiding problems.

    Stay in known areas and don’t go alone to weird places, just about everything illegal in your country is illegal in DR, be careful with any type of weapon, specifically illegally obtained or carried, it may just be taken and used against you if you are not well trained and/or land you in a police station where you do not want to be in not even to explain what happened.... Use common sense, get to know your neighbors, once you are known in the area the locals actually look out for you. I would certainly have a firearm in the house (just for extra peace of mind) and fully understand the legal process if you kill someone even inside your house in self defense. For the most part Dominicans are friendly, respectful and easy to get along with, go thinking you are a badass mofo and you will find out soon that Dominicans are fearless and will fight you and/or gang up on you.

    Came across this video after hearing about two very scary recent events in the Punta Cana area. A savage beating and rape of a American woman , and just today a couple was found dead in their hotel room - no signs of a struggle . These incidents have my second guessing our trip in a few weeks. Especially since the hotels were not interested in solving these crimes.

    Hi there Kelly, and thanks for watching! I just read the article, and supposedly there was something about them taking blood pressure medicine resulting in their deaths. Assuming this is the case, then this could have happened anywhere on the planet, and I wouldn't let that put you off coming over here. Maybe consider the North Coast, as here there's lot's of other Gringo's looking out for their fellow Gringo's (especially in Sosua / Cabarete) and by booking into I.e. Casa Marina All inclusive or one of the smaller Hotels, then for sure you'll have a great vacation and experience a lot more than just being inside a resort. As mentioned in my video, here in public you're safer than anywhere else on the planet. I hope that helps - Brgds Mr.T

    You never mentioned about buying a safe like bolted to the ground in your apartment . Or how much you carry in cash for a day.

  • @EducatedTraveler

    @EducatedTraveler

    6 жыл бұрын

    Especially if you own, then it's best to either construct some genius hiding place for some cash and keep the bulk in the bank. Dominican and Haitian workers see a safe as a treasure chest that must be attacked and opened asap, and if they have to go looking for some robbers to pull it off to get their cut, then they many times will go to this length. Golden rule here is "If they don't see it, they won't get tempted!". Many foreigners used to have staff, and either they got sued or robbed, and therefore many later prefer to do everything themselves to save the headache that could come with hiring help. If you head out in public to go shopping, then RD3000,- to RD5000,- should be sufficient, and maybe much less if you're just out for a quick lunch. Brgds Mr.T

    I think every body that has the same attitude you display, feels the same way about anywhere they would live. Do unto others as they would do unto you...goes a long way. What I find interesting with people is that if you can't avoid them...some people you can't avoid... with a healthy friendly attitude, the shear action of just "acknowledgement," really sets things in a very positive way. When you acknowledge people as human beings...regardless of what they do or how they come across...if he's a thief, prostitute, drug dealer...scammer, if you can get out of your shell and acknowledge them with respect...allowing them "To Be With You," for an instant of time, while you hold your own...that is NOT JUDGING THEM NOR BEING AFRAID OF THEM...GOES A VERY LONG WAY. Is my humble opinion. Acceptance (not over friendlyness...but acceptance of who they are), with Humility and integrity in my opinion is the international language of love. This of course when people want to get your attention...you need / must acknowledge them. This is my humble opinion, in dealing with people that are desperate or live in desperation as was described in the vid. When people are acknowledged by you paying attention to what they have you to hear, and you look at them right in the eye...with an non judgemental look, and speak to them the Truth...it will open up genuine opportunity for you to be able to contribute to others in away money could of never contributed. I can almost put my life on it that if anyone does this...the experience the other individual will have of you is one that will resonate in his heart for the rest of his life, and he / she will say to himself: "This guy though he's a foreigner, is not a %$#@!! he actually took the time to talk to me. He / She is a cool guy. I respect him / her." A nasty side effect of this advice is that you'll soon have a bunch of social undesirables saying hello to you on the streets, and giving you high fives, and shit. LMAO!! Then you end up in more shit, than what you wanted to avoid in the first place. LMAO!! That's how it is. As a young bartender in NYC, I'd have NYC Brass drinking on one end of the bar and the cocaine side of Guido drinking on the other end of the bar, and to watch these two buy each other drinks was a surreal experience!! LMAO!!! LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT!! WILL YOU GET RIPPED OFF? COUNT ON IT!! AND DON'T SWEAT IT! SHAKE IT OFF AND MOVE ON!! That lady (Jewish lady), that used to live in a gated community, but then decided to live it out on her own in her big house and two dogs...one for the inside and one for the outside...sure sounded very stressed out with the vandalism situation in her community. I thought she was going to croak just out of boredom.

    So firearms are well controlled and have a complex licensing system. What about a machete? I plan on hiking quite a bit and I'd like to have a tool with me for both utility and defense from strays. Would someone be likely to run into a problem with authorities and or locals if they had a machete on their belt while in the towns on the North Coast?

  • @EducatedTraveler

    hi James, and thanks for watching. The cops here look extra close at gringo's as they drive or walk around, so my advise is - don't give them a visual reason to stop you. Get a can of wasp spray instead of a machete or at least hide your mase so it's not noticeable to others. if you carry a knife, make it a scuba knife sitting in it's leg holster and have a mask and snorkel in the bag as well. this way you can always explain to cops your a keen snorkeler hunting flat fish. in DR never advertise anything that can get you in trouble or of value. hope that helps, Brgds Mr.T

    I'm not planning on hunting strays and whacking them with a machete for fun, if that's what you think. But I also don't plan to be defenseless if a feral animal should decide to make a run at me. I hike a lot, and I am always armed in case of mountain lion/bear encounters. In my opinion, when your out in the wild, you are part of the food chain and you'd better be ready.

    If enough Dominicans see a Gringo carry anything, then someone among them will soon see this as an opportunity to dub you in and get a cut out of the extortion process - Keep your weapons hidden! How do I acquire a gun if I want to live in the DR?

  • @EducatedTraveler

    @EducatedTraveler

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Harlem! Thanks for watching and reaching out. First you need to be a resident - then you would head to the gun dealer who handles the whole procedure of you buying the weapon, and the gun licence fee I believe has to be paid when you go to Santo Domingo for the shooting test. If you aquire a shotgun, then there's only a one time licence required from memory, where with hand guns they make you test your shooting skills every year and milk more money out of you. However my opinion is that unless you plan to live in a country like setting, then you really don't need one down here. As long as you're respectful towards others here, then in the public eye you're safer than a holy cow is in India. Most foreigners obtain a machete or baseball club to have near their bed while they sleep, and also hide a few minor weapons throughout their homes/flats, so just in case there were some intruders, you can either scare them away or deal with them. Some obtain flare guns from the marine shops here. If you're relocating here, then please check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/am2p2quRnqbfc6w.html Let me know if you require my services, Brgds Mr.T

    I am wondering if thieves there can see the difference between costume jewelry because of course ladies like to wear some form of jewelry. Like faux gold hoops and such. I NEVER bring my real jewelry on travel. Especially to 3rd world countries.
