‘Weak’ Putin made ‘paranoid’ by Alexei Navalny | Michael Binyon
“It’s a sign of weakness, really, that one man could create such paranoia in the Kremlin.”
The death of Alexei Navalny outlines the ‘paranoia’ within the Kremlin, a legacy of Putin’s Soviet predecessors, says Michael Binyon, former Moscow correspondent for The Times.

Navalny will be much more effective now than he ever could have been alive. He realized that when he returned to Russia to be crucified by little Putin. No one can ignore the selfless work and sacrifice Alexei made for Mother Russia. Putin's paranoia is a wonderful thing. He has no way out and he knows it. God bless you Alexei. How was Navalny a threat, exactly? In the 2020 Levada Centre poll, his approval rating among Russian citizens was 3%, some way behind the then Liberal Democratic Party candidate Vladimir Zhirinovsky at 13%, and trailing widely behind Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at 60% and, of course, Putin himself at 66%. Besides, most Russians outside of St. Petersburg haven't even heard of Navalny. I also notice a lot of these panegyrics praising his record as a Putin dissident seem to conveniently overlook his very strong ethno-nationalist leanings. The UK media is quick to vilify Tommy Robinson, but to my knowledge he hasn't released videos advocating shooting Muslims, unlike a certain Mr. Navalny.
