I believe with the TD that came into effect at 2019 USGP (restrictions on fuel flow), Ferrari’s gains with their Power Unit subsided for rest of the season. Not to mention they had to start all over again and we saw the impact of that on SF1000 during 2020 season.

Technical Directives suck. They pretty much kill the sport if someone finds a loophole and prevents creativity to prosper. By the way, I don't think 2019 Ferrari engine was nerfed by technical directive. It was more like they got caught cheating and the details became a secret.

@@SB3_01 Well, I'm all for preventing some kinds of creativity. For instance, Toyota finding a way to jam more air than allowed in tha car in the 90s in WRC is not a real innovation while in the road you can just have a bigger hole instead of concealed holes. Restricting teams from overusing fuel is the same. In a ruleless car you would not have to fake the fuel consumption readings. There was not a proper innovation, just rule bending.

2022 engines do produce less power than their 2021 counterparts. Due to the introduction of E10 fuel this year. Estimates seem to be from 5-10% reduction power this year. This is made up by the reduction is drag in this set of aero rules so you won’t notice it too much in top speed but it is noticeable is accel.

We don't know whether it was illegal or not as the fia didn't release any findings to the public. Even if they were exceeding the fuel flow limit, the fia and the teams were unable to prove it. It's basically as illegal as redbull's cost cap thing and merc's excess oil burning in 2017.

Yes they are heavier and less powerful, but downforce doesn't really matter at all, does it? Top speed is about drag. I mean they haven't been faster on straights troughout this season compared to earlier, but isn't this pretty much the first long straight without a high speed corner before it? So if the cars are indeed less draggy than before maybe they could reach this speed? We'll have to see, I guess.

Downforce and drag are proportional to each other. More Downforce means more drag, but not the other way around.

@@ArjunUK55555 Depends on the aerodynamic efficiency, doesn't it? For example if Formula 1 cars would use fans to suck them on the ground they would most likely have more downforce and lower drag at the same time compared to now or even last year.
