It wasn't just about that one physical dance. It's the dance of life. I think of a loved one lost when I hear this.

Yes, if you look for the original video it shows many famous people we lost suddenly and tragically (any person in our life symbolizes a "dance"). He references Dr. Martin Luther King, John Wsyne. John Kennedy and a few more. You should look up "The Change" as well. This song refers to the OKC Bombing and is emotional just as this song is.

Garth Brooks was the reason I went back to country in the 90's. He has so many great hits. You have to listen to "Shamless". Also a favorite is "Friends in low Places", "If tomorrow never comes", there are just to many to list. Gotta listen to some more of him.

He’d have a pretend microphone and sing Garth brooks, or Alan Jackson. There’s always that someone in our lives that this phrase is completely true about. For a moment All the world was right But how could I have known That you'd ever say goodbye And now I'm glad I didn't know The way it all would end The way it all would go Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd have had to miss the dance

I'm the type of person who listens to songs but don't hear what the lyrics are saying. I was that way with this song, I always liked the song but didn't really get the deep meaning. That is until my wife passed and I listened to this song the day of her wake. Upon really getting what the song was about, I thought that was my marriage. I would never had given up the time we were married, in exchange for the pain i felt that day. It really helped me. But there is more. My wife was a Catholic school teacher and was loved by fellow teachers, staff and students. (People waited an hour in line to get to me by her casket.) This song inspired me on how to council her students. I asked many of her students "If they would trade the pain they felt in exchange for not knowing my wife. Everyone said they will take the pain. My wife was an amazing lady. This song is one of the most powerful songs ever.

Garth Brooks' song "The Thunder Rolls" is amazing and shouldn't be missed. I think it is one of his most significant songs. Tony Arata wrote this song and sang it a few times before Garth sang and recorded it. Mr. Arata tells the story of Garth approaching him about recording the song long before he made it in singing. This most certainly is Garth singing. If you would like more country music, I highly recommend Randy Travis "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "It's Just a Matter of Time",

It's not just about the relationship, even though that's the central core of the song it also refers to life in general as "the dance" each of us go through it, we could all miss some of the pain by not trying and not putting ourselves out there for a promotion or at sport for example, yes we'd miss the pain of failing but we'd also miss out on so much more. Just a shame this isn't the original, Garth delivers his songs much better than any cover artist no matter how talented.

This is my husband's favorite song. He was in the military for over 30 years and he says that 'yeh, I could have not joined the military and missed all the pain that I have now, but I'd have missed the challenges, the excitements, the ups and downs, the friends that I still have, etc'. So in life, it's not just about losing a partner, it's about the life and choices you've made that matters. If you love the life you have, you wouldn't change anything, regardless of the little hiccups along the way. If you don't like the life you have, then yes, you'll have the pain, but you won't have had that dance.

This song is one I can never forget. I used to have a gal who was my very best friend ever and my very best lover ever. Every moment that I could spend with her was just so wonderful. We actually did meet at a dance. The dance was a slow one and the moment that we put our arms around each other and began to dance, there was a connection that we both felt. Never before or since have I experienced that instantaneous chemistry, electricity, connection. Sometime later, she played this song for me and it became our song. Just as the song says, I could never have known that she would one day say goodbye. The goodbye wasn't because of a breakup, it was because she developed a progressive neurological disorder and to deal with it and minimize its progression, she had to make her life as quiet and peaceful as she possibly could. So she closed her world down to just immediate family. I haven't heard from her for two or three years now, and yet I still think of her nearly every day. It is painful, but I would not have missed that dance and everything that followed it for even a king's ransom.

@@pattyyoung2103 Garth and his first wife were already done Before he and Tricia hooked up. He also quit touring so he could be there every day for his girls. Took them to school, picked them up. They actually lived down the road from his Ex and the girls so they could see him everyday. He didn't leave anybody. People break up and remarry others all the time.

I had a true love back when I lived in West Germany. (Many moons ago) As a little time went by I saw him again in the states. We went out to a bar while I was visiting and the next day he told me he had met someone else. I had let him go when I lived in Europe but when I was free to be with him, he had moved on. This song reminds me of whether or not we danced at that bar. The Chickasaw around Ft. Benning. It was my fault that I lost him but the good memories I have from Europe get me by. He is happily married and I am happy for him.

The “Dance” is life. He could have missed the pain but if he did he would have missed their life together…. “The dance”. Now that my husband is gone (RIP) I understand this song even more than I did before when we used to “dance” to it. I’m glad I didn’t know how it all would end…. Because I wouldn’t have wanted to miss one second of our “dance”. 😪

Amber, you get it girl! Three Chords and And Truth is in your heart! Sure there are country songs that are fun to just plain silly. But many more express the feelings of the heart. Some make me wish I'd heard them when I was 17. Others make me look back in wonder at how blessed I've been to have had the family and experiences I've had in my 73 years. Come on Jordan - don't just say you need to - Jump On In! You'll be really glad you did!

For a future Female Friday, please react to Bonnie Raitt. She is one of the top female guitarist and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. She's been around for decades. Listen to one of her early ones "RunAway" first. Future one from her Nick of TIme Album is Something to Talk About. I just love her and the first time I saw her in concert was around 40 years ago. She is total blues based.
