We Went To The Fake Sneaker Capital Of China (HBO)

After the sun sets in Putian, thousands of bikes carrying fake sneakers hit the streets.
The lace-up black market is no secret in Putian, and it's where you can find Chan, a vendor with a knack for getting high-quality pairs off the streets and into the hands of hypebeasts on the other side of the globe.
With rubber, he struck gold.
"I've spoken to some of our customers some of them are high school students some are college students university students. So yeah these are our main crowd you generally," Chan told VICE News. "It's usually the kids themselves were very resourceful. They understand about replicas they understand that these are high-quality sneakers and they come finding you saying, hey I'd like to buy some high-quality replicas from you."
And while vendors are subject to police raids and potential lawsuits, Chan has been able to stay afloat. These days, the only thing slowing his business down is nitpicky sneakerheads.
"Unfortunately, it's just the hard and fast rules of doing business. You meet difficult customers. You'll meet cheaters, you meet scammers who will be out there to cheat you off a pair of shoes," Chan said. "So, unfortunately, this kind of thing happens, especially when you're on a public domain like the Internet."
VICE News met up with Chan at his headquarters to see how his business is racing ahead.

    Replicas made in China by the same people who make the authentic ones really define that it all comes down to marketing. People are buying replicas because they still want the "feeling" that comes with wearing a brand. Imagine what Chan or someone else in Chan's position could do if they had the money to market a new shoe brand in the market backed by the top athletes and celebrities. If Chan is able to produce the quality, he could do really well if he decided to create his own brand that was backed by some big names. It takes a ton of money to break into a market that is decades old, but if marketed correctly anything is possible.

  • @underoath257
    @underoath2572 жыл бұрын

    Dude is right. It’s a win win win situation. You may think otherwise on first look, but this is easily free advertising for the brand owners. Sure, people will buy fakes and might lose sales, but they also bring attention to the brand. Attention is what makes a business, I won’t be even surprised if these brand owners are funding some of these replica manufacturers

  • @sd-ch2cq

    @sd-ch2cq

    Most people who buy the fakes would never have bought the real thing, so the brands are not losing bussiness. Chan is rights: fakes are advertisement for the brands. If the brands were really bothered by his bussiness they would move production to another country, possibly even back to the USA or to Germany. Everyone knows that the same Chinese factories that make brands during the day make fakes in the evening.

So I wondered how can some tiny company, reselling via Hongkong, make such original looking and feeling shoes. So I had an open and friendly email exchange with the guy on the other end, he was happy I liked them, usually he'd get angry mail from folks who "wondered" whether they had bought fake shoes because of how the site looked. Turns out he gets the reject parts *from the actual Nike factory* in because they pose as recyclers. Fucking amazing, same shoes, different price.

    ....but the only reason you want them is because the real ones cost alot. There's no actual benefit to wearing stuff that looks expensive. Logically it amazes me that people think this way. Just liberated enough to know that spending alot of money is dumb, but still dumb enough to think Yeezys or whatever are better than Nikes. People that buy fake shit are just sociopaths. A pair of amazing Nikes for 150$ isnt good enough, you want a fake pair of limited shoes for 150$ LOL. Dude cmon, do you also drive a fake Ferrari kit car?

    I bet the production cost of those branded shoes is as cheap as the fake one. Not to mention branded goods were often made by cheap slave-labours in third world countries, it is a well known fact. Most of the time fake branded-goods manufacturers are a lot better and more honest.

    True: the vast majority of Nikes, Pumas, Adidas etc are made by independent factories under contract. Often, these factories or a handful of people in then make some "extra" shoes over and above what they are contracted for, then send them to unofficial distribution channels. Legally, the shoes are "fake", but they are literally technically identical to the real deal. Almost as real, some factories bribe people in winning factories to send spec sheets: these are detailed technical drawings, materials needs and at times recommended manufacturing techniques. As long as you can source the materials (tricky but not impossible with Adidas Boost material), you can make a near perfect replica, much more accurate than reverse engineering the shoe.

    if you had a factory that could make 1000 pair a day but nike only wanted 800 pair a day you would run the extra 200 and sell them out the backdoor. this has been done for ages. You also sell the ones that dont quite make the nike quality standard instead of destroy them. You also might know cheaper shortcut that nike would not accept but that doesn't affect the look of the product so you do the shortcut and sell those too.

Who died and made you now expert on what something should cost. If something is limited the price goes up. I just go on Amazon and buy me some ordinary sneakers for less then $100 and i'm good.
