We want different things in 2024 (resolutions and what's next)

It’s a new year and a new episode of Tangents with Tyler and Todd! This week, we recap our previous New Years celebrations, share why setting intentions are better than resolutions (let's make realistic expectations that we probably won't follow) and we share our plans for the year ahead. Happy New Year!!! We've missed you these last two weeks and are so excited to be jumping back into our weekly schedule of a new Podcast every Wednesday at 9:00am Eastern Time! What did you think of our hot take on resolutions? Do you set them for yourself each year?? If so, share with everyone below what terrible trait of yours that you're trying to fix 😂

When you have nobody to be accountable to, it’s too easy to let those resolutions slip….so I just work on being the best me I can be. 😊 Hope you have had a lovely break away from the camera & video editing over the holidays. Can’t wait to get caught up on all of your shenanigans! 😅👩🏼‍🦽🐈

For what it is worth, I do not set New Year's resolutions, but I do update my vision and goals quarterly. My focus begins not with what I plan to do but who I plan to be :)

I think you guys would make great B and B hosts. My husband and I for many years went to a B&B on Lake Tahoe. They were little rustic cabins, and then you go into the main house for breakfast, and there are fresh baked cookies in a jar in the kitchen to help yourself during the day. They then serve wine at 4 and that is it! We went so many times a year, that we became friends with the owners and once in awhile would help where needed. You guys would be very good at that, it’s not dealing with a lot of people at one time, and I found that it’s “like” people that come to this type of B&B. Just a thought….

I've been watching your channel since before covid. I've watched all of your build with the land, and was surprised when you put the brakes on it. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed to see you stop after all you've been through, but I totally understand. Honestly, I think most people would have thrown in the towel a long time ago. Anyway, the reason I'm commenting is because of the comment you made about having a little hotel or something. This reminded me of a dream I had about a year and a half, or so, ago. In the dream I was at your place. I don't recall everything, but I was there with a group of friends. There was a big celebration, I think it was Pride or something. In the dream there were people camping in RV's, although we were staying in a two story cabin. I remember the trails, the outdoor shower, and the wine. I even took you some of the wine that I make, I hope you liked it. Point being, maybe that's what direction you should go with the land, a gay retreat. It would be fabulous. Love the cabin on the lake too, btw.

Yeah, time goes faster every single year! The two most important things to factor in are 1, purposely making time to make memories, and not letting the moments slip away, and 2, looking after your physical body, exercising, healthy habits ect ect. That’s so incredibly important, everything is miserable if your knees, hips, back, whatever constantly hurt and make even getting up to make a cup of coffee is a huge effort and costs you way more than it’s worth! When you’re young you just can’t imagine how hard everything can be.

I decided years ago to do intentions... and not just at the beginning of the year... but an ongoing check-in with myself. I once heard it said like this: If you were to climb out of a hole in the middle of nowhere and looked around. In one direction was the ocean, another desert, another a forest, and the last direction was the mountains. And you decide you're going to head towards the mountains. You'd like to reach it or summit it or cross it... but you want to go towards the mountain. You keep evaluating from there. You take step the direction of the mountains and you're working ON your intention (something got done) versus working TOWARDS a resolution (you don't get to celebrate until you reach the end). Like if you said you want to lose 100 lbs. by this date... but the date comes and you've ONLY lost 95. You've missed your resolution. You don't have to wait until you've hit 100 (or any specific weight) to be happy or celebrate... you celebrate because you're making steps to lose that weight... whatever those steps are. It's worked really well for me... and I've be doing that about 12 years now. Also, anyone struggling with weight and/or their relationship with food... I heard something last year that resonated with me and you might find it helpful: "Stop assigning morals to food." Happy New Year's everyone!

The being grateful for water feeling will never go away, when I was 15 we moved from Vancouver to a farm in Alberta with a well that only had 1 foot of water in the bottom and my sister and I had to supply 7 family members with water and in the water we collected only rain, my stepmother was very hard on us to do all this. But I will was I am now 63 and I still am still extremely grateful for running water. ❤

This episode felt like you were plugged in to my mind. Your thoughts, feelings, concerns... I'm on the same page with you, page after page. Has to be the same with many in the audience. So, when you wonder if it's just you guys who see it that way, the answer is, you're definitely not alone. You both do an excellent job of putting into words what most of us are feeling, with humor and diplomacy. I couldn't quite do as well as you... I can dish out the humor, but I'm not generous with diplomacy. As an enthusiastic fan of your channels, with admiration and love for each of you, my experienced advice is that the top priority in your lives should always be to savor every precious moment with each other. Safeguarding your individual physical and mental health is an important ingredient to strengthen and increase the moments you will have available to savor. Your relationship is a radiant beauty in this world. Absolutely stunningly beautiful. P.S. Consider purposing The Land as a 🏳️‍🌈 campground resort if zoning will allow it.

Resolution is something people make in the last part of the year without any real reflection on their life now but where they want to be in the future. Goals are about taking our lives to our best level and best selves, and they can be made anytime of the year. If we are serious we figure out the plan to get us there or at least a place to start the path to get there. Resolution = daydreams, goals living our best life

Fireworks started off in China. In order to experience your life more fully, it behooves you to practice presence, that is being fully present in each moment as it unfolds. Spend less time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. When you are fully present in each moment as it unfolds, you have the opportunity to enjoy the moment as well as make choices which fuel your well-being and joy in life. Meditation is a good practice to adopt, and it doesn't have to be a sitting meditation, you can do a walking one where you consciously walk around your property, see everything as you go, feel and hear it. That is a presence focused within nature.

*** fun fact.. some folks build a dropped ceiling in their domes.. it helps keep the heat in the lower half, just like in a regular house with an attic. insulate it and use those sunroof tubes to bring the sunlight down to the living area.. Use the attic space for storage. .. Might be something to think about if you're going to keep the land and have people rent it or family have a get away..

I like your outlook on life and your realism. Self-sufficiency is interesting, but very difficult. In my own life, I garden, live in a small house, and do things for myself. But I have no desire to be self-sufficient. I live in a society. I respect you both for changing gears when you recognized reality. Excited to see what you bring in the future!

There are few scenes more heartwrenching than the separation of a mother cow from her calf when the latter is taken from her, which occurs shortly after birth on most farms and after a couple of days on the "happy" farms. The profound distress that mother and baby express is clear and unquestionable. If your enjoyment of milk, cheese, or ice cream matters more to you than the distress of these individuals, you need to do some serious self-examination.'

The tradition of using fireworks to celebrate the New Year has ancient roots. The practice is believed to have originated in ancient China, where fireworks were invented around 2,000 years ago. The Chinese used fireworks to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck. Over time, this tradition spread to other cultures and regions. Fireworks became associated with celebrations and marking significant events, including the transition to a new year. Today, fireworks are a common part of New Year’s celebrations around the world, symbolizing joy, excitement, and the start of a new beginning.

My 2 cents (ok, probably dollars) about the land project. It sounds so cliche but I'm a firm believer in "everything happens for a reason". Hearing the two of you now, I reflected on watching that journey and now believe you were plummeting into complete burnout (if you hadn't already). You can only hit brick walls so many times before you crumble. The land is a double edged sword. On one hand it's like a dream come true but on the other, a semi dream, that came semi true with lots of hard bumps, bruises, extremely hard work and disappointments along the way. If the issue with the container home hadn't happened, Charlie's surgery hadn't happened (and I'm sorry it did), you might have never even considered buying the cabin and moving. Going away on vacation isn't time enough to really talk about, think about and decide long term goals, reevaluate your wants or decide if those have changed. The time you have now has and is giving you that. I love LOVE the land, but if you decide living there off grid isn't your dream anymore, then you know you've decided over time with lots of thought, reasoning and discussion about your decision. ❤🐾🐱🐾❤️

Okay, you guys. After listening to you for half a year, and listening to millennials in my office, I'm now convinced that the anxiety and pressure talk is almost entirely performative, or serving some other purpose that's not actually about being anxious and pressured and unable to commit and perform. Because you do. You produce massively and you do it routinely. So my resolution this year is to stop taking y'all so seriously when you talk this way, because you're doing it for your own reasons and are not actually signalling that you can't [whatever]. I'll just go make myself some tea while you're doing that and by the time I come back you'll have sorted it. Also if you break a resolution God sends you sciatica. I'm kidding. Probably. Happy new year. :D

I feel bad cause in our town the town sets off fireworks at the fairgrounds…..the worst part is…the fairgrounds is super close to the shelter. It breaks my heart and wonder if people correlate that the fireworks we all love is probably scaring the crap out of the animals. I have decided to contact the shelter and see if next 4th if I can sit with a dog and try to sooth one through it.

My birthday is New Year's Day - when I was little, my parents told me that the fireworks were for me. I learned that wasn't true around the same time I learned the truth about Santa (I think I was 30!! 🙂) but to this day, I kinda pretend the fireworks are for me.

Hey guys, here in San Diego, CA we celebrate British New Year. Midnight in Lodon is 4 p.m. here. We ring in the new year, and get ourselves home before the amatuers get out there and do all their celebrating. Amsterdam is lovely to visit, but long term living, get out of the city center, or some quieter town.

I live in a small community with fireworks on NY eve and NY day until 1 am. I have a small nervous dog and the sounds make him manic.

I never make resolutions for New Years but always self-reflect and choose a word that I want to improve on in that year. The possibilities are endless and the word chosen can mean something different in January than it does in June or December. Glad you both enjoyed your holidays and look forward to all the wonders 2024 has in store for you both.

Happy 2024!!! Missed you. So I was fed up with NY resolutions. And then in 2008 someone dared me to think of a resolution and bet me 100.00 usd that I couldn’t keep it. Sooooo, don’t dare me cos I’ll do it . Since 2008 my New Year resolution has been the same, learn 1 thing a day, and guess what? IT WORKS! It is natural to learn something every day. Yep, trivia game, anyone? Put me on your team! . BTW I won the bet. Try it. It’s always nice to watch your podcast and your weekly vlogs. I love you guys and you are freakn awesome!
