WE'VE PUT THIS OFF FOR TOO LONG | Life on a Mountain Homestead

After a fire tore through our property in 2022 we were left with a huge amount of dead and dying trees to sort. These trees on the island of our (empty) lake have been a viewpoint for us for a long time, so it's now time to chop them down and bring new life to the island on our mountain homestead!

Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Here's a little down payment on your future sawmill. Bea, if you look up magnolia trees you can see a different version that has massive white flowers. I'm from Louisiana outside New Orleans and grew up seeing that version. Also, if you know what species your cherry tree is, Rainier cherries are the yellow and red version. OMG they are soooo awesome! The thing is though that to get fruit they have to mate with a different species of cherry tree. I want you to know that I love you guys to pieces. You're in my prayers and I'm so glad you've come through all your troubles like a trouper. Theo, you're one h*** of a man. You and Bea are an awesome team!

The bush is a quince and it will produce fruit that makes a lovely jam/jelly - though slightly tart. Great with cheese. The fallen apple which has a flowering limb can be propped up with a wooden pole (cut or shaped as a Y at top. The fractured limb can be repaired too - but maybe you have so many trees that it could be sacrificed after this season? You two are so industrious. And enthusiastic. The channel is a joy to follow.

Oh glorious Magnolia! All the growth, buds and blossoms are such affirmation of life, they remind me that all that spring colour is around the corner here in wintery Canada. My favourite city (so far) on the planet is New Orleans and the magnolias there are prolific! I am so grateful that our rental house comes with a magnola in the neighbouring yard - so beautiful! That island seems a perfect spot for a garden with the felled dead trees now. You both work so hard and bring maximum joy to your viewers - it is wonderful to witness this life, thank you for sharing :)

Hi guys, I love watching your videos. You both are so inspiring. Bee thank you for your video about PMDD I shared it with my granddaughter as your symptoms sounded like her, and she has PMDD now thanks to your video, Bless you, she lives in Canada, so we're hoping to find a doctor to diagnose and treat it for her, she has endometriosis too. Also I saw the video when Theo was talking about the people in town needing wood. So maybe you guys could offer some of the dead tree wood to the villages if they could come out and cut it down themselves. It would save you time, get the dead wood cleared out and not cost you anything but helping out neighbors, Good luck and thank you,

The community has spoken already, the shrub is definitely quince. Still dropping a comment to boost engagement, as I love watching all your updates - it is lovely and poetic watching the property blossom again after the tragic events it's been through, just like you two have persisted through it all. The quince fruit btw is amazing as both jam and jelly, but you'll want to heat treat it to avoid tummy aches, it will turn a beautiful pink color. It's more work than more common fruits of today, but quince has a wonderful flavor with a lot of depth and notes. It's also very high in pectin; so if making a jelly out of the liquid you boil the fruit in, it will thicken up nicely. There's many recipes to be found online. Lastly be warned the bush is very(!) willing to spread with minimal effort, it's quite hardy.

If there's any life in the trunks of the fruit trees, you can graft healthy scions to them. You can even try multiple different fruits on the same trunk. You do this in the late summer or during the dormant season. There are lots of good videos and articles detailing the process.

You can build a pool house on the island. Somewhere to retreat to after swimming.

Hi Theo & Bea! Love, happiness, purpose, joyful effort, the beauty of nature, Gingy-bear & "Fur"nando, fruit trees, and a quince in flower. Who could ask for more? Beaming love & goodwill to the pair of you. I was in Terrace, BC but now I'm in Wapekeka, Ontario, Canada. Your videos tether me to the warmth of the outside world while I'm hunkered down in the icy winter.

Theo, it's going to be really nice to see new trees 🌳 You truly have an awesome property. It is a dream property. Bee, cherry blossom branches make such a lovely centerpiece decoration for the house. The last tree you showed, with the big blossoms, I believe it's a pink magnolia tree.
