    This might be a slightly strange message; but Thank You both for taking so much time, expense and care to look after the bees! Sadly, these days, many people wouldn't bother, and just "get rid" of them. Keep up the excellent work! 👍😊

    Black Mountain Honey - Laurence - he’s the best resource and is in Wales. There is a saying amongst beekeepers … ask 10 beekeepers a question and get 11 answers! I’ve kept bees for years and started my son off last year with his first hive. It’s the best hobby, completely satisfying! And you get honey! Good luck. I have a video about flow hives back in my archive. GOOD LUCK! Don’t be scared of them Emilie!!! Xxx

    Yes, his videos are great. Black mountain honey and gwenyn gruffydd are our favourites to watch and learn from and both from Wales 🥰 for me its more a sound/sensory reaction. I actually think if I had noise cancelling headphones on I'd be way less jumpy/reactive 😂 the longer I spent with them the more relaxed I became. Just something completely new for us, so I'm hoping I'll get better with time 🥰

    I will never forget my first encounter with hives. Took the courses ,KZread videos, books etc. I ordered my two nucs. The massive sense of energy I felt when I opened my box. Crazy. Beekeeping has taught me to stay calm and respect the space. They are not predators. They just want to serve the hive . To me it feels like a big responsibility but also a privilege to be a small part of them. You might want to get a mouse guard for the front of the entrance. I've named my hives after the strong women in my life. It's a fun ride !

    You can definitely move them within the 3ft/3m rule. There are a few things to do. When you put them in the final position. Drape a thick layer of leafy branches over the front of the hive. This way the bees know something is different and they re-orinentate to the new location. The 3ft/3m rule has been debunked now. Research it, you'll have more options then. Hope all goes well with the girls.

    I’m so excited for you guys to do bees. I’ve been a beekeeper for 12 years and I love it. It is challenging at times but the one thing I would like to say about your bees in your caravan. Because they’re aggressive they’ll always be aggressive unless you can change the queen and that’s only maybe. But you could advertise or the place that you talk to they might know someone that would come and remove them for you and take them away and then don’t even get them back to start your new hive with the right type of bees that are not aggressive, I’ll be watching you guys, and praying all goes well. You two guys are amazing and we love your dog.

  • @CampOutWest

    @CampOutWest

    Thanks for all that info, that's so helpful. Never thought about changing the queen, but it makes so much sense as they are what sets the mood for the rest of the hive. Thanks for sharing all that with us 😊 we are so excited to expand our knowledge ❤️ Maggie is our dream girl, we feel so lucky that she is our dog

  • @thechellenator

    @thechellenator

    3 күн бұрын

    Yeah, you can try killing the queen and replacing her with one from a more docile species (or same species but more docile temperament). The hive might not accept her, especially if they've already started developing new queen cells of their own within the hive, but it's worth trying. My understanding is that it's not so much her "setting the tone" as literally changing the genes of the hive as she produces new bees, replacing aggressive bees with chiller ones (passing on her own genetic temperament). Worker bees only live a few weeks, so complete turnover happens more quickly than you might think, and massive change can be wrought in just a short amount of time. :)

    Well done, it's such a great learning. When moving to Wales from Cambridge in 1985, a neighbour actually gave us a hive full of bee's. The man who gave him a hive years earlier made him promise to pass on the same one day. That happened to be us. I must admit the van (one of 4) it's driver was very nervous all the way.!! But we made it. Is the honey farm near Newquay still open? Also, we enjoyed honey ice-cream on Aberaeron quayside. WCL

    Very interesting ,my cousin is married to an arborist ( I think that is the right name for a bee keeper) he was once asked by local police to pick up a swarm that was on garden gate. Well he apparently got them in to a container and put it on the back seat of his car and headed off home. Unfortunately somehow they got out so he then carried on driving with a huge number of bees flying freely inside his car . He did survive to the tale but rather him than me. Good luck with it all hope it goes well. Rich W Ely UK 🇬🇧

    very interesting video today. Your bravery astounds me. I'm not so sure I would have felt so confident with the bees. But I am thrilled that you intend to move the bees and that you are going to start with some easier bees to keep. My friends here in my village are bee keepers. I am in awe of the products they have that are natural. Best of luck with it all. The hive looks nice.

    You are like 2 little busy bees yourself! Can’t wait to see the newcomers arrive. It’s such a great idea to have bees, especially when you are going to rely on your own home grown vegetables so much. In the future maybe fruit trees and bushes. You will have top notch quality produce with the bees pollinating your plant life. People in the area are often looking for locally produced honey, it’s a great treatment for hayfever, so never say never to selling some. Good luck with the bumblies guys xxx

    It's great your getting into bees , Jon I would have made the stand as wide as your hive floor. If you can locate them facing east and in the morning sun ,they will benefit from an earlier start.. and get some mesh on the inside of your roof vents . Best of luck, enjoy the honey when it comes.

  • @CampOutWest

    @CampOutWest

    4 күн бұрын

    I made it the width of the cutouts in the base.going to run a ratchet strap over the roof to secure it and think I want to make some legs for the stand that i can bury in the ground to make it more solid for the winter storms. Mesh on the vents is a good idea, there is a mesh board at the top of the hive super but covering the vent holes will keep moths and other insects out too

    John/Emily- I had fun watching this vid. Em being nervous at the apiary and her body language made me nervous for her but also some laughs (Sorry Em). Ha! A couple things from a highly experienced beekeeper that has a few years under my belt - including flowhives. 1. The 3 foot 3 mile rule is a myth and can be overcome easily. 2. You want your apiary in a spot that receives lots of sun. 3. Those flowhives can be difficult to get the bees to take to. For max success a.) get the bees BOOMING before you add the flowframes/super. Buy a big chunk of beeswax, melt, and coat the heck out of those flowframes before you put in the box. It will 10X your chance of success. Have a blast! I’m in the US, but glad to jump on a ZOOM anytime you may need some advice. Enjoy your journey! -Josh

    Actually just saw you paint that hive. For next time - Those hives are wax dipped at the factory and don’t need (actually aren’t supposed to be) painted. It won’t hurt anything - the paint probably won’t stick for long.

    Paint those tap caps on the flow frames a bright color. I promise you’ll lose one if you don’t. When you’re in harvest and drop a clear one in the grass they’re hard to find. Ask me how I know. 😂

    Thanks so much Josh! I'm going to reply in your comment order 😊 honestly, I was so stressed at the start 😂 roger told me about a time he didn't do his hood up correctly and loads of bees got into his suit, so that's why I was holding the front of my hood at the start, I was worried they would sneak in 😂😂😂 good to know the 3 mile rule is a myth. We are going to clear a few overhanging branches where we have put the hives, which should open the space up a lot 😊 and thanks for the tip about adding the wax to the flow/frames/super , great idea! So kind of you to share all your knowledge. We are so excited to be starting our bee keeping journey
