We Try to Catch a Rogue Mustang!

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

We travel to California with our rope horses to catch a lost mustang. The mustang escaped her pen and is on the loose. If we don't rope her, nobody will.

Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. I'm a retired rancher from the interior of B.C., Canada. We use to gather up 20-30 head every winter, keep 6 or 8 .for our stock and sell the rest off. Preferably we'd go on this camp-out early Dec. and have 12-18 inches of snow, we had 3/ 2man teams with fresh horses and radios. This is back in the late 60's and we were young dumb and full of come. Our stratoge came from watching wolves hunting these herds down. We had a half dozen brush corrals scattered over 130,000 Hect. The team that found the first bunch would get them going and stay with them for 3/4 to 1 hr. before being relieved by an other team and the 3rd was always trying to stay ahead sad predict their travel. Being 2 months into winter and poor feed the wild ones would last 3-5 Hrs. and they were done for, at that time we'd make a plan to driver them into a trap or rope. Real pain in the but trying to chase with 6 ropes on board, but it made for friends that you could count on for anything horse stock tougher than nails.. These were typically 7-10 day trips and neither man no9r beast came home high headed. Apart from calf sales this was the high lite of our years. Look forward to your next adventure with this lady. Cheers and well wishes, Billy in B.C.

@@Rune_Fayhar I am sorry but to say they live uncomfortable lives is a human outlook not an animal's. By your statement it means every wild animal lives an uncomfortable life wild. Wild is nature period and at one point we humans lived just like them so our ancestors lived uncomfortable lives too? and should have been captives against their will?..oh wait that is......and horses evolved on this continent and then spread out before they vanished here basically they are returning where they were born. And actually not considered invasive but BLM has to cull to keep the populations low to keep herds healthy and disease free and satisfy the people who complain about them. The problem here is she can't just let the horse go back to wild (unless she could find a refuge to take her but they are usually full from taking the non-adopted mustangs) since when you adopt a wild horse the BLM holds you to basically a care contract and she could be heavily fined if the horse isn't recovered.

My Grandfather once went after a gelding that a ranch hand lost to the mustangs. It took some cousins on horses and in trucks to back him up and he had a 5 horse 'strand' to chase them down. As he was running the herd/gelding down he would transfer to the next horse on the string as the horse he was riding would get tired. He was on the last horse ( my mom's gelding) by the time he finally caught the loose gelding. He said it was a wild ride and was lucky that the whole string was willing to run after them.

Ok, bona fides first. My grandfather used to have horses along the 'hole in the wall' trail frequented by B Cassidy et al, and had several run ins with them when they rustled a few of his horses (I am very old now). Accordingly, I grew up with horses of lots of different breeds, and a LOT of 'mustangs', i.e "feral horses". At one time I was the 'spokesman' for the BLM's mustang and burro program, and for a time, they used to cart me around the various 'adoption' centers, live stock shows etc. to promote the program and to put on demonstrations on how to tame them without getting either the human or the horse hurt. There was a even a time when adopted horses got returned for being "too wild/dangerous"; or some other reason for being basically 'un-adoptable' they would offer them to me to live out their lives on one of 'hobby' ranches. In this way, (as well as a few adoptions of my own) I have worked with or had on the ranch with me, some 50 to 75 or so...maybe a few more- all during the last 50 years or so. During that time, I feel I've gained a 'bit' of an understanding of, and a whole lot more, an appreciation of, "mustangs". (oh, one other thing you find informative, I have also been a Tracker, with the San Bernadino County Mounted Posse "search and rescue" unit- for which I ALWAYS rode a mustang-those mountains are ROUGH country. OK, now that I've bored everyone with that, let me tell you AT NO TIME, EVER -in ALL THOSE YEARS, did I find the need to rope a mustang, whether off the back of another horse, or from the ground :/ Simply put, mustangs seem to me to be substantially smarter than the average domesticated horse. Nature is a cruel taskmaster...all the 'dummies' got weeded out. ALSO, mustangs 'need' to be part of a 'herd', group, almost any social relationship, is demonstrably stronger.. sooo, simply put, if you can establish yourself as a suitable 'leader', they will follow. It's a mental exercise/contest between you, if you 'win', they will literally die trying to please you. Over the years I've had a number of 'escapes' from the ranch. Some mustangs can literally stand next to the typical barbed wire fence and just leap over it from a standing start. Some of the horses that escaped did so in groups up to 15 or so, and were roaming the countryside for some weeks before I returned to the ranch and set out to find them. Just this last year I had a mustang yearling start getting out, and it literally took me almost a month to figure out how he was doing it! I've named him "Houdini" LOL. ANYway, a 'typical' recovery (depending on distance) involved either me just walking up to the grazing 'herd', getting their attention, and having them follow me back to one of the gates. Other times, when some miles of distance were involved, I had my brother drive me out to their vicinity, then after a bit of socializing with them, I would sit in the back of a pickup/jeep/ etc. and have him slowly drive me back to the ranch, with the group strung out behind. Now for those skeptics out there, let me tell you I'm not the only one who has done these kinds of recoveries. As to how, I like to think its 1. because I'm part native american, 2. I grew up in and around all sorts of animals in the high mountains of Colorado, and I like to *think* that I understand a bit about how horses think and act. I could tell you LOTS of stories but let me give you just two more. I once had a wild 7 year old paint mustang stallion get into a fight with another in the herd and while trading blows, he backed into a barbed wire fence and severed the tendon in the back of one hind leg. I radio'd for an old vet I knew to come out asap- convinced the other combatant stallion to go somewhere else, then talked the paint 'down' from his combat intensity ( dealing with fighting stallions on foot is NOT a trait smiled on by Insurance company actuaries :) Anyway, once the big boy calmed down (and I mean big..probably bout 1250 lbs or so) I helped him extricate his leg from the fence, and during the next 20 minutes or so got him to lie down, get the weight off his leg( to ease the pain- like I said, they're NOT stupid). I took off my coat and laid it over his head, mostly to shield his eyes from the blazing sun, and a few moments later, '"Doc" rolled up in his vet truck some 30 yards away (this vet KNEW horses). I kept talking low tones and stroking the stallions neck while telling Doc what I wanted to try, i.e sew the tendon back together with HEAVY, i.e strong, nylon line before it shrank. Have to admit, he thought I was nutz, but agreed to try, so here we were, squatting in an open field during surgery on an unrestrained wild mustang stallion (he'd never had a rope on him/saddle, nothing) w/o anesthesia of any kind, for about 45 minutes. When Doc had finished and bandaged the leg, I took off my belt (damned near lost my pants when I stood up later :) and used it on the stallion's front legs as a hobble after I got him to 'carefully' stand up - he was stiff, a bit dehydrated and most likely hurting like hell, so he got up gingerly. Doc told me he'd never seen or even heard anything like what we did that day, shook my hand , and went back to where he had been treating cattle. It was now late in the day, with the sun going down, so I stayed with the stallion till the next morning when I very slowly walked him down to the creek to get some water. While he was resting in the shade I cleared the other horses out of that part of the ranch so he wouldn't have any reason to move around more than absolutely necessary. I brought him flakes of hay, and he settled down to munching away..End of story? he made a full and complete recovery was able to run, climb the mountain, and live out his life. Ok, now this has gotten waay too long so I'll hold the story of 'Houdini" till another time. BUT, what I wanted to say about the attempt at roping a mustang, :) Well, I and some of the best California riders/horsemen I knew, with some of THE best roping horses around, were once called down to try and help rope and remove a herd of wild burros from an area between the San Bernardino and Riverside freeway's where they had taken up residence. Now THAT was an exercise in futility LOL. Now ALL these pro ropers were better than me, but I was no tyro( once when announcing during a big time rodeo/live stock show I had been challenged by some of the contestants to engage in a 'celebrity' "Rope Off" against them, and through nearly pure luck, I won:) Anyway, there wasn't a single one of us that managed to rope a burro that day and we tried until our horses were exhausted LOL. Picture it like trying to rope a 200 to 500 lb Jackrabbit! I had NO idea a burro could move that fast or stop and reverse that quick, was simply amazing. To the OP, Forget the mustang, you ever manage to rope a wild burro I and a whole bunch of pro cowboys/horsemen would be SERIOUSLY impressed LOL.

Thank you for your stories they were so fun to read! I am the owner of Jenny. She is so smart. We’ve taken her heard sister out to try and bring her in. But we were unsuccessful. If The boys can’t get her this time we will try a corral method and camp out. With our two more domesticated horses. 🥰

Well I'm watching this video for the first time and first time to your channel. 1. Such a beautiful and big country that is. The glacier on the horizon was beautiful. 2. Go to experience for the first time the spirit of a free horse 3. The partnership between owners and the horse so good it just does what they're asking to 4. Riding the horse in full speed was amazing I've never seen that not even in the movies I bet it's better than riding a motorcycle or a car, must be very addictive

it's a valid concern, but the mustang was likely not eating well/drinking well, and also not in a herd so bad sleep. also, with 3 riders, they were probably able to pace themselves pretty well, whereas the mustang most likely bolted each time. so the mustang had a severe disadvantage versus hank and the boys, so i'm sure hank was fine :)

She knows she's a sitting duck without a herd. That's why she keeps coming back to the spot where she knows the other horses are that she was corralled with. Trust me, she is one worried mare. I used to wonder if my Mustang mare would be happier in the wild in Wheeler Pass, NV...then I found out the BLM did an emergency round-up in 2015, because the horses were starving. It's a huge off-road area, and the off-roaders and those living around there kept calling the BLM to do something. They rounded up 128 horses, and 28 were so starved they had to be put down. They did another emergency round-up in 2017, luckily no horses were lost. It's not as romantic as you think living in the wild. They breed like rabbits...and when the herd gets too big for the area to support them, it isn't fun for them at all. Starvation is a cruel way to die. If you try moving them, they just find their way back, because that's been tried also.
