A little late but I remember a tip from an old Good Eats episode that goes with the apple peeler hack. You can use a drill bit like that to core the apple (or pears, which the episode was using) by just using the bit as it was intended to be used. Just on a fruit rather than wood, and with a smaller diameter bit.
Popcorn Science: What causes corn to pop is a buildup of steam and pressure inside the kernel until it explodes. Conversely, a drier kernel won't pop because it doesn't have enough internal moisture to build up sufficient steam. Soaking your kernels before popping ensures they're properly hydrated, so that with the application of heat, they'll happily explode into the classic movie snack.
@GmodPlusWoW

With that in mind, if dried kernels were soaked in a flavoured solution before popping, would those kernels absorb the flavour molecules in the solution?
@CarlGorn
2 жыл бұрын
@@GmodPlusWoW Probably not, since flavor molecules are much, much larger than the simple H\o/H of water. If anything, the flavor additives could impede hydration.

@@CarlGorn That's a pity. Though with that said, I wonder if there are any flavour molecules that are small enough to be absorbed by dry kernels in a solution. For instance, would glucose and fructose be small enough to be soaked up into a kernel, causing the corn to caramelize in the heat? And if it were possible, would it be any different from kettle corn and caramel corn?

My popcorn hack is to keep the popcorn in the freezer. The idea is that the very cold kernels create more steam making for bigger popped kernels. It seems to work.

A tip with the salt block: it needs to preheat along with the oven! Do not put it into a hot oven or it might crack and split.
Guys, I read about that popcorn hack from the comments here ages back. I've been using it forever since! It really does work, supposed to dry them but it seems you don't have to. They come out really fluffy as well! Try that one you won't be left with broken teeth.
That bit with the apple and the drill was so legendary :D

MrsB is a hoot in this one. BTW on the straw my calculation is you have to cut it to a length that would allow the bendy bit to be at the center and long enough to hold down half the circumference of the container. I'm sure there is a math whiz out there that can explain it better.

Saw the thumbnail & though it must be Barry choosing the hacks….. Mrs B is getting bold!
The phone hack reminded me of another. Put your phone in a ziplock bag to keep liquid out as well. Now I need to go get some popcorn kernels and try the soaking trick!
Salt blocks are great for cooking and they don't really impart a super salt flavor. Also great to freeze and serve charcuterie...or sushi. Love your channel and when you two do hacks together, you guys crack me up. Cheers!

I think this may be my FAVORITE kitchen hacks video. I'm still laughing at the usual mild mannered Mrs. B gleefully peeling that apple with a twinkle in her eye!!
LOVE IT! You and your lovely wife doing this video together. She's so funny. I love how you two work and communicate together. Great video! You two are so funny together!

Thanks for another great episode in the series, Barry!
Always happy to see a hacks video or any video with Mrs B!
"You did it, thanks." I actually DID audibly go "Bayehaheha", and was disappointed you didn't. Hah. XD
Oh, the apple peeler is the funniest thing in ages. Please, have Mrs B pick more hacks. Thanks for the fun video.
Re: Popcorn hack... the botanical explanation is that it works because it increases the moisture inside the kernel (like all seeds, it's somewhat breathable and exchanges air and water with the outside world). Soaking them allows more moisture to go into the kernel which is stored in a little pocket in the kernel which when cooked, builds up pressure and explodes, making the popcorn (this is why kernels "expire," they get too dried up so have no steam to explode them)
Not going to lie I really like the peanut butter slab. It's also really nice to see Mrs Berry being more comfortable in front of the camera good on you mate!
Oh wow! Accidentally got here early. Thanks for the years of amazing content, Barry.
Question, if I have no knife to cut my onion how do I cut my onion in half??? 😂😂
Try the bendy straw again but leave some length both before after the bend so that it actually grasps and bends to the lip on the yogurt pot if that makes sense- so the actual bend sits on the front lip
I love it when you two do hacks tougher. It's funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Didn't a company make peanut butter slices at one time? I think they were wrapped like sliced cheese is. I'm going to have to Google it and make sure I wasn't just remembering wrong 😂😂. Edited to say I looked them up and they came out in 2008 but just kind of disappeared. Thanks for the 💜

My god the smoke coming off the peeler when Mrs. B whizzes the drill is just wow! And the apple flinging off at the end is just hilarious xD

Yaaay! :) my favorite series is back! :) Good to see you again, Barry! :)
Looks like you all had fun!
These weren’t Mrs B’s finest hacks but always a good watch 😂👌🏽
Thinly sliced steak on a salt block tastes awesome (don't season first) but then ruins the appearance. One for presentation, one for cooking on. Wet things like sliced strawberries take on some saltiness. Do the strawberry test before the block soaks up the meat juice flavour.
I can't ever hear the word seal anymore without doing the thing .... thanks Barry lol
I think the popcorn hack works on two fronts. One is that it may soften the husk or shell to make it pop more easily. The other is that if any water seeps inside, it will aid in the internal pressure and pop to make each kernel pop. Popcorn pops because although it seems super dry, it has a tiny amount of water. That water heats up, causing pressure inside the kernel, which pops it.
That apple peeling one looked like so much fun 😂
That peanut butter round on a big brownie and microwave! OOOOooooo
Hi Barry! Here in Tucumán, Argentina we use a grater with a can like the one you made it to make a traditional food named Humita, you grate fresh yellow corn 🌽 that was previously soaked in water to soften, yo mix that grated corn with pumpkin puree an cook it with sauted green onions and lots of paprika! If you love paprika and corn you'll love it!!
"Have you ever needed to chop something but don't have a knife? Step 1. Get a knife"
I flinched when the apple came flying at the camera
More fun with popcorn...hand some kernels and a skillet to your non-cooking friends and ask them to fry it for you...it's hilarious to see their faces when it goes flying...and it'll give your puppies a tasty treat too.
Omg! New kitchen that means I have missed out on so many of your vdos. 😍😍😍😍

@12:40 "I really want some cheese that I've managed to forage" Kids, don't eat cheese that you find in the woods
The popcorn ones seems simple, the layer gets permeated by the water making it less strong so the kernels are more likely to pop.
@rolfs2165
2 жыл бұрын
Not quite. What makes the kernels pop is the water inside turning into steam - the unpopped kernels have gone stale and too dry.
You guys are great together 👍
Hi Barry! Love the show ☺️☺️

You okay there, Bar??? You completely missed the great opportunity for a "breaking bread" dad joke!!!
Mr and Mrs Barry are so cute, giggling together 😂😁
“Have you ever been in the situation where your wife asks you if you have ever been in the situation….”
Pro Tip: Don't try to wash the salt block in the sink. It litterally disolves. Someone did that where I bought one.
The way the popcorn works is that water is a really good conductor of heat and water soaks into the kernels
@josephine2985

I personally find that putting the oil and corn into a cold pan on a cold stove and heating it all up at together gets all the kernels to heaz up more evenly and thus almost all of them pop

The frozen peanut butter slice reminds me of the caramel slices for putting over apples.
"have you ever needed to cut thin slices of onion and you haven't got a knife?" .... Barry : *side glances at Barry lewis veg prep kit*
I can endorse the clingfilm-phone hack: I work in a warehouse where we deal with some fairly unpleasant dust that plays hell with electronic bits. But a plastic bag (or, preumsably, a bit of clingfilm) takes care of things perfectly.
I like the peanut butter grate it for topping or enjoy a slightly frozen sammich
I'm dyin, lol. "If we whisper the internet won't hear." X.x
Love these videos xx
I actually love the peeling onion idea for salads & sandwiches. I love onion but I don't particularly like biting into thick pieces & in salads I don't like breaking up the rings. I also have a cucumber & onion salad recipe that would be spectacular with thinly shaved onions.
mrs barry is getting a lot more confident in the videos. well done

the popcorn hack is great....love making popcorn, I will soak it first
I like the onion hack. Note Barry's veggie prep kit used. Yes I have it. Stonking
Have you ever been in a situation... Barry: YES
Tried the popcorn hack in the "air popper" doohicky. I lost more popped corn to the floor than unpopped kernels at the bottom of the machine. Will be soaking them from now on.
“Why are we having a domestic?” 🤣🤣🤣
That's a salt lick for horses but in a posh box 😉🤣
Well done Mrs. B!
I started to notice that when the bread starts ripping apart when you spread peanut butter. it's normally after the bread comes out of the freezer. I think it breaks down the bread and makes it much more weak.
Was hoping to see you make a peanut butter and onion sandwich. 😀
I love your videos.
I’ve save the plastic straws whenever I got one over last 2 years. So I have plenty to use. My daughter makes fun but she usually get a straw from me
Yes I said Baeyaa when you said Seal it 😂😂
I have a Himalayan salt block and I know you can use them on the stove top but I don't, I only use it in the oven, it works great for any oven recipe that doesn't require a deep dish, or if it dose make sure you have a large pan bigger than the salt block it's self and use the pan as a drip tray on the shelf right under the salt block
the water gets turned into steam and with it on the kernel it pops faster.
