Best is to go out to Howth on the Dart, do the cliff walk and finish of at Beshoffs for fish and chips. I recommend it to any tourist it’s a must.

Crabby Joe's is a must if a connoisseur of freshly prepared served food that has a friendly atmosphere to boot😅
You’ll think twice about asking the general public if they wanna try it. You never know where your next Mario is coming from😂
The man with a table and chair rated this place 10 out of 10. As someone who lives about 10 minutes from this fish and chip shop, I can confidently say that your review is far more accurate and fair. This place offers decent food at tourist prices, not great food at reasonable prices. Keep up the good reviews! Far better than table and chair man who gives everything 10 out of 10!

He rates everything a 10 though.
After eating Leo Burdock fish and chips recently I agree with your review, I will add they were much better or should I say tastier in the 1990s when I first experienced eating fish and chips from them.
@ljr35
Жыл бұрын
I think it was better 20 years ago also. they would often double fry the chips back then which guarantees crispy chips. the basic flour and water batter they use is indeed a problem - it is the traditional Dublin chipper batter but now that we have all had beer battered fish it just isn't good enough anymore. Having said that I know the flavour of Burdocks so well that I do get cravings for it on a regular basis!
@maryryan9464

Agree with that if u don't like skinny fries from Mc d u are in need of burdock for the chips are always outstanding imo💚
The crispy bits were the batter bits. Little bits of batter thrown in the fryer. Leo Burdock was one of THE best ever chip shops in Dublin or Ireland for that matter. When the fryers changed as he said from the coal fired everything did change a bit but it’s still really good. Years ago there were little or no tourists walking around there and it was the place to go after a few drinks on the way home. Still love it. I always ask at any chipper for the batter well done as I don’t like it wet inside as it feels uncooked to me. Crispy is always better, trust me.
Mario hasn’t paid for fish in years - damned legend that fella 😬! Great stuff lads 👍👍

Years ago when I was a kid there'd be queues halfway down the street for their fish and chips. Everything wrapped in newspaper.
@marcdunne7831

Yea I never see queues now for fish and chips
The reason the battery is wet on the inside is because it is not reheated. The fish is supposed to be steamed in the batter, so the batter should be soft on the inside. When a fresh cod is reheated in the dripping the batter goes all crispy and the fish is dry. The reason your fish was soo good is because it was only cooked once..
@allenwixted1992

Polite question, but you can totally batter a fish, cooked once, with crispy batter and juicy fish. How come more chippers don’t do this?! I hate that layer of goo 😅

Mmm scraps. When I was a kid in the 70's I always asked for scraps on mine. We had a chippy that used to refry Friday night's chips for Saturday lunchtime. After swimming we used to ask if they were last night's chips? Loved 'em.
So glad you hit that actual shop. There are a few all over the county . Some not what they used to be whereas this one always was and always will be . Also Glad you got the bits .. And Mario.
Love the honesty mate.
Some years ago ate Leo Burdock's fish & chips from their shop in Howth, was really even bellow average, more than 10 years before that was regular in Dublin's Leo B. and it was good stuff, but obviously that changed. I reviewed the fish & chips here in Malta just two days ago and it was quite good, nice and crispy the batter.

Hard to imagine that Mario was the Lord Mayor of Dublin in 2009
Matt - btw always been same regarding batter. Always referred to batter we don't like as having horrible gloopy floury batter underneath crispiness. Nothing worse.
"Callum give him ya number" Cracked me up! 😂
2 big fish up north bro 👊 the crispy bits are just batter that fell off what ever is fried usually end up at the bottom of the frier and cleaned ❤️
The best bit part of crispy cod the geezer walkd off 🤣🤣

we call the crispy bits " scraps " up in the north east, just the small bits batter left in the frier, top vids
That’s gas - two of my pals are Yorkshireman living in Dublin, and they think the exact same thing as you about Fish batter in Irish chippers. It’s not as nice they say as the fluffy, crispy stuff they grew up with. Must try it some time!
I was brought up on burdoks fish and chips old skool but its not the same since the early 2000s as they started doing sausage and other stuff ,,when they just focused on fish .. I'm 45 now but when I used to skip school some days I used to leave my school bag with paddy that made the batter for the fish and done so over 65yrs sadly he past 18 yrs ago,, the batter on the fish now isn't the same and there for I don't eat out of there no more,, plus its owner uses the name burdock and made it into a franchise the family name is long gone from the chip shop ,, keep up ur reviews love them liam from Dublin 8,
Great vid 🤣👍👍🙃 I always had good experience with that burdocks all the same, I'd give 9 out if 10, From my experiences. Fair play guys 💚🌸
Best fish and chips ever I’m going there since I was a toddler in the 60s love it
Great video lads, Beshoffs is where its at for fish n chips in Dublin
Upping the game here getting a curry sauce holder 😂
You should try small places around the outskirts of the city, avoide temple bar. That can be a tourist trap. Give the small places a try and. And go out to howth fresh fish!
Beshoff's Clontarf/Howth
loved the bus driver...haha
They called the crispy bits Dublin caviar when I was in.
Mate you should try the New Kingsham fish and chips at Chichester. It’s the best I’ve tried in Chichester
Standard of that chippy has plummeted in the last ten years.
Just subscribed because i like the way you tell the truth, enjoy watching troops 👌🏴 was it anstruther yous loved?
Do Beshoff's in howth much better batter on the fish!😊🐟🇮🇪
Matt, those cripsy bits are called scraps. They are mostly offered up north in england, they are basically just the bits of batter that come off during the cooking process and normally get discarded. Also Mario is Irelands version of Tomaž lmao, for those of you OG's you will know what im talking about.
Crispy bits are the best bits especially when the salt and vinegar melts in

Surprised you didn't get hit by the seagulls! Burdocks is avoided by most Dubliner's now. You'll get way better in numerous inner city chippers these days. Even the suburbs have much better fare, especially in the Italian chippers. It's great that it's still going though.

Being from Dublin, I agree Leo Burdocks is overrated, like others have said, it was an absolute gem of a place about 15 to 20 years ago, much more selection of fish e.g Ray (British call it Skate) Haddock, smoked haddock, Dublin bay prawns, fresh cod and smoked cod, Chips used to be phenomenal, they were chunky very crispy and floury potato inside, I think it started to go downhill when it was turned into a franchise with Leo Burdocks popping up around Dublin and elsewhere around Ireland, all which closed within about 5 years due to there unpopularity with punters, awful greasy food is all I can remember of the franchised versions. In my opinion, the best "Chippers" (Irish for fish and chip shops) is any branch of Macari"s , they do a mean Neapolitan style pizza also that wouldn't break you.
Our first ever chipper shop experience in Dublin - room temperature mushy fries and tasty but not at all crispy cod - I hope we have better experiences soon!
