Göcek, Turkey has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean. Tall mountains surround numerous protected bays and dense forests loom over the crystal clear water. Honestly on the surface it seems perfect. But these mountains create extremely deep anchorages so boaters are forced to anchor very close to land and tie lines ashore. This situation can be very dangerous if strong winds come from the wrong direction, which is actually not all that uncommon here since the wind wraps around the mountains in unpredictable ways. So you can never be certain that you are truly protected. And that’s a bit hard to stomach when our home and everything we own and love hang in the balance. Now if you cruise this area in the summer, the weather is for the most part calm and predictable, but you’ll have to share it with about 7 billion other boats. So we’re here in the spring and although the anchorages aren't too crowded, the weather is at times volatile and unpredictable. So we’ve got to learn how to cope with these unique challenges if we’re going to survive one of the most beautiful cruising grounds we’ve ever experienced. But first we’ve got to make the 50 nm sail from our current anchorage at Serce Limani, where we’ve been for the past week enjoying a bit of isolation and off-grid living.

The fluctuations in weather seem similar to that of the northwest U.S. The coastal mountains and inlets lend themselves to interesting challenges. Like SE Alaska, Washington, and BC, anytime you have steep coastal terrain along the coast and amongst the islands, you have deep channels with tidal changes and evolving winds. Turkey looks absolutely beautiful. Sunshine and warm weather would make for wonderful leisure time. Love how you impart the history, culture, and food for each area you visit. Not just enjoyable videos, but educational too. Like you say, “you just don’t know what is going to happen”, life also brings the greatest rewards when least expecting them.

Having cruised the Turkish coast for five seasons what you're experiencing is common. We found planning ahead with several different anchorages in case of weather change was helpful. Everything you learned in the USA re weather, clouds etc. is completely out the window in the Med. Try to see what the fishermen do, if they stay put so should you. We managed to find stops that just required rode. Try to up your scope to 6+. Hope you go to Fethiye and Keci Buku (fabulous salale (waterfall) restaurant takes you.

The bay of Gocek is amazing, we moored at Turgutries as our home mooring, but went to Gocek several times and left the boat there for 2 to 3 months a year there as you can always find a protected area and some of the bays have pontoons you can moor up to when the wind is bad or changes direction, there is a place at the end of the bay called Adaia at the end of the bay and if you can get on the sandy area you will have good holding but there is several places around the area. Happy sailing.

Hey Atticus crew. What a gorgeous cruising area! You handled the challenge well and were rewarded with a nice dinner out. And you scored a bunch of fresh food. What could be better? RE: your anchor rode. I'm thinking you might want to invest in 200' (or so) of heavy nylon rode to back up the chain. It doesn't weigh all that much. Around here (Pacific Northwest, Inside Passage) we are frequently anchoring our little old trawler in 100' of water (and more) relatively close to a steep shore, on bottoms that vary. Stern ties are common. We only carry 200' of 3/8" chain, but we have an additional 200' of nylon rode, AND our anchor is seriously oversized. It is a Forfjord #6, which is generally used on 50' commercial fishing boats in this region. Those guys don't muck around when it comes to ground tackle. The nylon rode absorbs shock loads when the boat is on anchor in heavy or erratic winds and bouncing around and all of your chain is out, which is fairly common here. So the chain isn't transmitting the shock load directly to the ground tackle without something to take on the instantaneous strain. We also rig a nylon snubber when we are on chain only, but don't need it once we get 40' or more of the nylon rode over the bow roller. There are times we set anchor with some nylon rode out when we don't really need it for scope, just to quiet the anchoring gear down for the night. The chain transmits noise very well, but the nylon doesn't so much. Hope you make it to the west coast. The Inside Passage is incredible. Once you have been to Alaska, you never come all the way back.

I used to sail around Florida or the West Coast between LA and SF. But the one time we were going to take my parents out it was Lake Tahoe. With mountains all around there is no such thing as a consistent wind direction and instead we were constantly changing the sails or direction. At one point we were in the middle of the lake heading back to the Marina. Not another boat in range so i decided it was a good time to go below and use the head. I put my dad in charge of the helm. Within minutes my Aunt was calling for help and truthfully there wasn't a thing they could do that was dangerous so i just let them call while i noticed they must have changed course as the sun was coning in the port at another angle then moving back. At least they're learning something and having a good time i thought as i finished my business then headed back onto deck. When i arrived everything was EXACTLY as it was when i left. So it surprised me to hear that they did a 360 while i was down below and i never knew it. It made for even more funny stories when they got home.

Then we'll be citizen's of the entire world until we're tired of it. I don't remember the specifics, but if the standard grid was 2 km spacing, the adjustment that made a big difference was to change to 500 meter. The new grid spacing corresponded really well with the size of hills and rivers in the area. Near the end of this video, the spread on your bread looks similar to Greek tzatziki. Is it similar?

I have a boat in Göcek, Anchoring is different than other place in the world you have to be sure your anchor has catch the ground tight, and then use the robes to keep the stern for both side, similar Mediterranean mooring. You don't need long scope and you can not because of shore steep. Definitely, it is different experience, but very useful for similar situation. You can anchor at boynuzbükü in front of the jety where you take video. other place is Kille iskelesi in front of public beach, 0ne or two spot in martı koy and if there is no boat "tersane adası yaz limanı" Other "koy"s just suitable for medmooring

Jordon in the Bahamas uses two anchors to protect the vessel from the shifting winds. I hope this option you consider.

😢You guys are too worried about the anchoring in Göcek bays. As long as you anchor on a slope which is getting less deep towards the shore/boat and you have lines to shore you are mostly very safe. I spent a lot of time sailing in Gökek bays during covid (2020 - 2022) and usually had no problems in the meltemi and being singlehanded.

In addition to being one of the world-famous marinas, Göcek is also one of the most beautiful and most expensive marina towns on the Turkish coast. In fact, it is also famous for being one of the favorite ports of Bill Gates and Amazon's CEO Jeff Bezos. If the two anchor in Göcek at the same time, they will definitely visit each other and this will always be the subject of the news lol

What would happen if you just connected the boat end of the chain to 100' or more of stout line?

Would it be possible to have standby chain to add to your anchor for the deep anchorages you will encounter? I mean so you can increase your scope, is that totally impractical?

You have to have at least 300 ft of chain, and you better anchor before noon because afternoon wind picks up. After anchoring and tied the lines you have to tune with windlass. .. it's stressing but that's the way
