Simple gutters and downspouts will stop the water trough from forming and splashing up on the wood posts. It will also give you some rainwater catchment for watering the lawn/flowers.

With that huge roof you could get some giant rainwater catchment totes for each corner and have enough to pump into your cistern, or even build a secondary cistern near the barn as a backup water source. No more creek hauling..... wouldn't that be nice. (You should also do that with house roof to run into your cistern)

Wow, with the walls/framing you can really see how big a space this will be. What a huge accomplishment and homestead addition. I wish I had Greg's carpentry skills, dang, and the two of you are such a team. Question: I saw a video a while ago where you were hiking your property with the dogs and goats, and the CAT was following you too. I was cracking up, does your cat do this often?

Old followers, watching from Australia. Loving how happy you both look, especially Greg now that you have full time to work, with Katie, on your home. The new barn/shed is looking excellent! We also vote for the suggestion for you to put guttering and down pipes, leading into two large plastic water tanks, off the side of the shed. Just on the side with the new metal roofing. We put water catchment on everything with a large roof space here. The tanks might freeze in winter, but you could drain them prior to winter. It could provide invaluable fresh water over summer, to back up water supplies for yourselves, animals and garden.

Greg & Katie, a marvelous job today. It's looking Great. One day, to be able to do chores underneath the barn without getting wet. Maybe you should consider an wall area (where you can frame for cables and clamps) where in the future you hang a solar panel or two for some night lights or even heat. Hoping you have a beautiful & safe upcoming week. Hugs from Santa Barbara 🤗😘🍷🌹😎👏🐐🐤🐣

Hi Katie and Greg, great to see you again today. The transfomation of the building is happening quickly and it look great. It must be so nice to have a work space under cover and out of the elements now. The siding and window trim look great and you sure accomplished a lot. I'm glad the chicks arrived with minimal loss. I was glad to see the two shorter diagonal supports for lateral movement working around the window. That is exactly what I was thinking you should do; after watching the previous video, I got the impression you abondoned the idea of a window there because a longer top to bottom support would interfere with the window. Have a great week and be safe. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

I would have used a torch to char those bottom boards to increase the rot resistance. You really need gutters on the barn. Just connect them to an IBC tote or 3 and save the water for the animals. You can use a 6 or 8-inch PVC pipe cut in half lengthwise for gutters in a pinch. If you have bats in the area you can encourage more by putting up several bat boxes. We did and the mosquitos and flies were no longer a problem. Having an additional lean-to to run the tractors under would not be a bad idea to consider. A door cut between studs is just fine for a goat door.

FYI. In working with James Hardy board it is imperative that you seal the cut ends of all wood that you’ve put in. If it’s not sealed, it will get moisture in it and disintegrate. I know this because I was part of a condo complex that had the whole deal done and hardy board, and the contractors did not seal the end of the boards or any cut areaand we had the ends disintegrating and just flaking off just word. Just the word to wise so far everything looks great.
