For the best strength and endurance you need to mix your concrete first and add rebar too. Too big an area for dry pour. Please don’t do dry pour.

Dry poor has its place but a floor is not one of them. Dry poor is great for things like post holes. Dry poor doesn’t always get the water distributed through out all the mix, leaving weak spots. You don’t want your floor to start popping out pieces of concrete or cracking apart. You definitely want a wet poor for a floor.

@@user-do9ff8rg4y I’ve seen test on KZread comparing wet pour to dry pour. The guy made 2’ square forms with 2x4’s then set them in a gravel bed. He did several wet pours and several dry pours. First thing he noticed is he could not get a nice finish on the dry pours. When he wet it, it brought the gravel in the mix to the top. Couldn’t get a nice cream. Then two days later he removed the forms. The edges were great on the wet pour but a bit rough on the dry pour. He then flip the pads over and found the dry pour still had dry sections that fell off the pad. The wet poured pads were solid. He then lifted them up with his skid steer and dropped them about 6’. The wet pour pads stayed intact but the dry pour pads cracked into pieces.

Use the dry poor method if you don't care if your floor is strong enough to hold up to any level of abuse. Use the wet poor method if you want something that will last.

Exactly! Dry pour is a ridiculous concept - a cheap cement mixer does most of the work for wet pour and you will get a result which will last for your lifetimes.

Hey guys your doing great but just a suggestion as I was a builder for a long time is put hangers were you roof joists attach to the ledger. As you will have a large snow load on that roof and beef up the leader as well

Saw you start up that miter saw, and thought “How nice is it to work under cover?” So glad you put gutters on, so many barns just let the water drop in front. In regards to the concrete, I wouldn’t do the dry method. I have seen tests on the resulting product, and it crushes easily. Don’t forget the vapor barrier, it will keep moisture from coming up and making the workshop humid if it every gets wet under the concrete. Good job, looks good closed in.

I saw a YT channel that did a strength test between Dry & Wet poured concrete and the Dry pour didn't look so good. It gave me the idea that doing Dry Pour would be ok for walks and small slabs but not for larger pours that require Heavy traffic. Art in Calif.

I worked with guys doing concrete research. The talked about good entrained air ( less than 1 mm air bubbles that prevent freeze/thaw raking), and entrapped air (air bubbles over 1 mm that reduce compression strength, and cause freeze/thaw cracking.) Mixed concrete is worth the extra effort in my humble opinion. But then again I'm not doing the work...LOL

Wet pour with reinforcing for a floor, don't forget a gravel base with a waterproof membrane.I know its a lot more work, but it will last and stand up to tractors and saw mills, a dry pour wont. Last thing you want is digging up broken floor sections and redoing.👍

A dry concrete pour exposed to freeze-thaw cycles can face several significant issues due to insufficient water and incomplete hydration. Key problems include inadequate hydration, reduced strength and durability, and increased porosity and permeability. These factors lead to excessive cracking, water and urine seepage, and accelerated wear from plowing/cleaning waste.

  • @chipprice1174

I have my reservations about a dry pour. I like the way Jay and Jen did it, with a gravel base, then putting down half of the dry pour, then adding some wire, and then the rest of the dry pour. I think wetting the ground first before adding the dry, is part of the key, and the intermittent watering of it, I think they did it every hour for 6 hours. It won't look as good as a wet pour, but as long as you don't drive on it, it should be good. It will continue to absorb water and cure for a long time. But I am sure it'll be better than working on a dirt floor. Just remember to get out all of those twigs and roots! Come winter time, it'll be so nice to have a dry place out of the elements to work in. Too bad you did't have this area first, before doing your other builds. Thanks for sharing, always a pleasure to see you two working together.

I would not recommend dry pour, it doesn't appear to have compression strength. Driving on it with a load will break it up. Concrete setting (wet mix)is a chemical reaction, that takes place usually within 4 hours (hot faster, cold slower without salts). You could use wet mix down the center area where you may drive tractor and do the sides as dry pour, but wet would be better. Our rule was not to move poured concrete after 4 hours. Hard work that I don't do any more, but I will be pulling for you.

Dry poor = weak concrete. What you gain in "ease" is more than offset in a weak concrete floor. It's not even close to the same. Even with rebar, it will be 75% weaker than a standard mixed poor. If you ever intend to drive a vehicle into your barn, or have to deal with freeze/thaw issues, you'll want to take the extra effort to mix your concrete correctly.

  • @timkirkpatrick9155

NO DRY POUR! DIRT CRETE can work for outdoor paths. Inside it traps junk and fluids and is too weak to use over time. You still need the same ratios as for concrete. fines, course aggregate and Portland cement and water. Stoney DIRT as a mix does wet set fine. The flaw in dry mix and sprinkling is getting things mixed well and the right moisture for a proper cure all the way through with compaction.

Your barn addition is looking great. Love the siding colors. Conventional concrete pour has worked forever. I'm not so sure of a dry pour. I don't think there's much of a cost savings. And preparation is just as much. In a wet pour you could sprinkle the slate blue to mimic the wood slat color if you wanted to color the concrete. Your looking marvelous Katie. Saw a demonstration recently on You Tube comparing the dry pour method vs the regular method of pouring concrete. Using a 6 inch square and 4 inch deep form the demonstrator took one of each and put them in a vise to compare the strength of each. The difference was pretty dramatic. The dry method did not hold up to the pressure that the regular method did. After seeing that I would not recommend using the dry method if you plan on putting a lot of weight on it at any time. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy watching.

Hi Katie and Greg. I can't get over the transformation of the barn project. It is looking absolutely great! It is such a nice space and will certainly serve your needs well. I have never used the dry pour method but am intrigued with it from all the vids I have seen about it. Many certainly swear by it. My only concern would be that actual surface itself and how it would hold up to abuse in the long run as it would not be finished in the traditional wet method of finishing. The rest of the installation is just common sense approach with a good base, wire mesh, tamped down, another layer and following the watering and curing time intervals and recommendations and it should be fine. Have a great week. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

I have seen the dry method on concrete, I am assuming that there is enough moisture in the ground and in the air to work, even though it is under the roof. I did see a post about automatic chicken doors is a plus to have to make your life easier on those real rainy days. It is looking good. Keep up the work!

Wonderful progress on the barn! don't know anything about dry pour, but reading comments gives some good advice. Happy to see those gutters go up!
