We’re back together, Panaracer Gravelking and I

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In the past, I’ve used everything from 26mm slicks to 32mm SK and 38mm gravel slicks. Needless to say, the Panaracer Gravelkings is a longtime favorite of mine. And now it’s time to try out the biggest and badest model they make, the Gravelking SK 27.5 x 1.9 (or 650b x 48mm)

The best way I found to remove sealant is using your thumbs and rub rub rub, then scratch the surface with some emery sanding cloth, then patch it, then apply a RTV silicone sealant over the patch. You will never have to worry about that patch leaking again.

Just set up a pair of these tonight to handle a snowy commute (and some gravel riding later in the season). Was really surprised how easy these mounted on a pair of HED Belgium rims. Had the similar experience with Compass tires - both in terms of sidewall damage to the extralight casing, and weeping sealant (Orange Seal Endurance Formula). Thanks for the great videos and sharing your rides - great resource for those of us planning a cycling trip to Japan. Peace!

Here in Canada I use the continental top contact winter 2. Wide enough for traction but thin enough to cut through the snow easily (I found mtb size tires too washy in the snow). They're brilliant even in ice. I only use one on the front and then have a thinner mud tire on the back due to space restriction and because it's better to have more traction in the front in winter.

Interesting. I just made the switch in the opposite direction. I went from various sizes and treads on the Gravel Kings to Compass tires. The Gravel Kings were fine, but I just found them a bit of overkill for most of my gravel rides. More weight and more tread than I really need. There are a couple of routes where I'd prefer the toughness of the GK's, but for the most part the Compass have been serving me well for the last year and a half. I'm torn between the extra-light or standard casing on the Compass tires. I've been running Extra-Lights, but I do worry a bit about cuts. I've heard some people state they have experienced cuts on them, but I have not had any problems so far.

At the moment I am using a compass tire on the front and panaracer gravelking slick on the back. Saves a bit of money as I only seem to get punctures on the back and have destroyed 2 tires from large glass around the city. Also I believe the compass has slightly more grip on the road than the panaracer so that's why i use it on the front

An anecdotal statement for a durable gravel tire, but my flatbar gravel bike came with Giant P-RX2 700x40c tires (and inner tubes) and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I've been abusing the bike on routes and footpaths that you'd normally only ride on a beefier XC MTB. While I did pump my tires to a bouncy 40 psi and used oversized inner tubes (Maxxis welterweight 29x2.10, oversizing inner tubes adds puncture resistance), it handled sharp shale and rocky fire roads. It does get sketchy on loose pebbles as the tire's pretty slick on the center, with knobbles only at the sides. Pretty decent on roads too.

I have a blue bike with black tires and I also like that look, but the brown-sidewalls and smooth tread of those gravelkings looks great with the light blue of your bike. I'm building a gravel bike from the opposite end - a mountain bike that I use as my wet-weather trainer when its too wet for mountain biking. So my gravel bike will have a front shock, anf ror now flat bars, though I really like your bar setup. In fact, I'll probably go to drop bars but keep the suspension fork. Bicycling is a little taste of heaven.

I love the SKs for actual gravel and have found they roll well on tarmac too. I didn't enjoy the slick as much on road, finding them squirrelly at the lower pressures needed for tubeless in 650b. Originally, I didn't like the SS either as the carcass deforms a lot causing hysteresis but the SS was a better road choice in 38mm. Love your videos and just ordered a RBDF T shirt from you. Keep on keeping on.

Great video again. I haven't been riding gravel for as much as you but I started with Maxis Ramblers in 40mm. One was good but the other was wonky from the start. Setting them up tubeless was a ritual I don't want to repeat. Now I ride with a Schwalbe 40mm G One on the front and a Gravel king 43mm on the rear. The GK rides good on the road and terrific on dirt. Schwalbe on the front is slightly better on road and not so on dirt but we're talking only very small margins. The main point of purchase for the GK's was the puncture protection belt AND the tyre sealed properly on the first go AND loses air at the same rate as my road tyres with tubes so super happy there. The Maxis with Stans sealant constantly weeped out of the myriad of puncture wounds. Even the tiniest thorn holes. There was always wet spots on the tyre surface after a couple of days. Both the GK's and the Schwalbe have been terrific. Another thing that may not bother too many riders is the tread runs very true on the GK's. Something the Maxis drove me nuts.

Greetings from Canada... I have been riding Gravel Kings SK (700x32 and 700x35) for the last two seasons and have nothing but positive comments. They're a breeze to install and provide a superb ride. The longevity though is mind-boggling...I've put on 9,700 km on two sets with just two flats on a combination of road/gravel/trail. They SK's are outstanding value for money. I ride Panaracer Race D Evo 3 for my road riding - same experience - 9,300 km last year on one set and zero flats.

Over the past couple of years, I've ridden thousands of miles on the GravelKing SK's, both in the 700 x 38 and 43 mm sizes. They've been my go-to tire. I really put them through the wringer on some rough gravel, and have punctured nearly every tire I've had on the rear, but none so bad that I couldn't insert a "bacon strip" plug and continue on my way. If I had one complaint, they're not the longest lasting tire out there, but their price makes up for that compared to some of the more "mainstream" gravel brands.

It is funny as I had exactly opposite experience with them, they are light, they roll and grip well and they have no protection. SKs are the tires that I pinch flatted 5 rides out of 11, resulting me driving home with the tube inside (the hole can't be sealed). That didn't happen even when I rode same roads on 23mm cheap road tubes, so I put SKs into the dump.

Old as vid but in case you haven't found a solution to tubeless tyre patching: the best thing for removing tubeless sealant is something like sticker/glue remover like "Orange Power Spot & Goo Remover". I'm sure there is a similar product in Japan. Totally cleans the sealant, but you do need to use isopropyl or metho to remove the residue before patching the tyre. Have patched dozens of tyres using this cleaner + iso clean + a light sanding + a radial patch with standard tube vulcanizing rubber glue.

I have been running the 700X35 gravelking sk for a few months now and I like them a lot. Coming from a 700x32 continental gatorskin the sk is much more supple and offers way more grip and confidence on gravel and dirt. I haven’t run them tubeless because my rim is not set up for it, but I have not experienced any flats yet. I do find that the narrower tire does not do that well in the snow. These wide ones that you have seem to cope way better. I find that I have to be careful to not lock up my back wheel as skidding tears up the knobs. They also don’t seem to last super long but I’m fine with that as well. For my next tire I’ll probably go to a 38 and maybe try running tubeless. Idk if I will get the sk again tho I might try something else.

Two rides so far (40+ miles) and I'm well happy with how they handle on gravel, dry bridleways and tarmac in my part of the world (Peterborough UK).....They weren't very good in any wet mud (which I already knew) but I'd give them an 8/10 so far on what I ride......Had them at around 40psi so far....

I was not prepared on that sound. i'm not realy sure if the leakage is caused by the tire or by the rim (Hunt 4Seasons) but the tire has some seams close to the bead left over from manufacturing I guess, maybe those are causing some problems...

Looking at the SK for quite a time now, but didn't pull the trigger yet. At the moment I'm on Schwalbe G-One 700x35c with tubes and except the high weare on the rear I'm fine with them. But I think when a a set of brown SK in 700x38c is on sale I can't hold back. Heard nothing bad about the tires so far.

Hi Marc. There is plenty of space for the 700x38c SLICKS! In fact you could fit a 40c in there or possibly even a 42c. My CaadX is a 2018 model so as long as you bought a 2018-19 model you'll be ok. Older models I'm not sure if 38c will fit. The slick Tyres are good for light off road and on road riding which is all I use mine for. If you are doing a lot of gravel riding and tracks similar to the video forget the slicks. You will need something with a deeper tread. Hope this helps.

The noisiness of the Gravel Kings is a dead giveaway for high rolling resistance. When training I don't really care, but for racing typically run WTB Horizons for hard pack and the Gravel kings for the looser stuff.

Loved my SKs (700x43) but decided to try Riddler 45s when the SKs wore out. The Riddlers are excellent, with just a bit more grip in thicker mud due to the bigger blocks on the shoulders. Hard to say if they’re any slower on road than the SKs but they’re no slouches. Still running Gravel King slicks (700x38) on the road wheelset and they make awesome all-rounders for tarmac and not-too-gnarly off-road - fast enough for mid-pace club runs too.

fadenseiden Okay, that’s interesting. I know some people had problems getting Compass tyres to seal with Stans/Schwalbe (same thing) sealant - lots of weeping through sidewalls. One suggested fix was to use Orange Seal instead and it seemed to work for most. Unsure whether another alternative would work just as well but I’ve had no issues using Orange Seal Endurance in Gravel King SKs and slicks or the Riddlers. I do have the tan wall Riddlers though so that could be a factor?

Love these SK's, run them in a 700/43, but find them really leaky set up tubeless. Would be very concerned about riding them tubeless on a multiday ride. Running the non SK variant on my road bike in a 700/28 and notice no loss compared to a GP4K.

Just put the Gravelking SKs on my bike, replacing WTB Byways. The SKs have way better grip on loose dirt/sand and rocky gravel areas that I’ve ridden this far. On tarmac they feel lighter (weight is 108g lighter) and plusher.

Hi RoJ, I've recently found you're sites and I am really enjoying your content, very informative, professional, and personable [Can we still say Edutainment?} We have similar bikes, I'm on a "Classic U.P." and eagerly awaiting news of the SRAM Force AXS in April. Any road up, I've been unlucky with Gravelking SKs - 700x48 - this is purely anecdotal, but I find them porous upon initial tubeless set-up. On two occasions now brand new tyres have had punctures on me,, the first in the first week of use, on about it's third ride. And the second on its very first ride. Rear tyre on wheel that's been used happily with other brands over long periods. The first tyre was at 100km into a 200km gravel grinder - fast fire road descent, nothing extreme. I ride 650B offroad usually, so didn't use the Panaracers again, as I put skinnier tubeless road tyres on and had no problems over the rest of the year. So, getting ready for the same event this year I decided that the replacement tyre needed a few "safe rides" to coat the inside with sealant before hitting the gravel proper. Set the new tyre up the usual way, took it out on a local rail trail, completely benign and punctured the new tyre. It deflated completely, but held onto the rim and inflated back up with a CO2. Anyone else have similar experiences? it was a small 3mm cut so I've put a boot on the inside for now and I'll just ride them on the road to try to coat the interior sufficiently. I always use Orange Seal and I always tend to put in too much, rather than too little.

Ouch! That's certainly shit luck... or I don't know it luck has anything to do with it. You story is pretty much the same as my story with Conti GP4k tires. They are basically universally loved by everyone but I sliced so many side walls on those tires that it dosen't make sense to keep buying them, and they are not cheap either. So even if it's anecdotal like you say, I certainly would not blame you for not touching a Gravelking tire again :)

Funny timing. I have a 30k commute home from work that is 25k tarmac and 5k gravel. I have 2015 Specialized Roubaix and the biggest rubber I can squeeze in are 28mm, so I fitted Schwalbe G Ones, run tubeless. Not great on gravel, but its the best I can do, especially with so much road in the commute. Got a massive sidewall tear today, way to big for the sealant to fill and my bloody mini pump wouldn't work to inflate the emergency tube. Had to walk 2k barefooted (road shoes) to the end of the gravel road and get the mrs to drive an pick me up. O, the shame.

My second ride out on them, and I suffered a puncture. This was on really nice quality asphalt, and there was nothing even close to obvious on the road surface that I happened to roll over. Aside from that, the ride quality of these tires has been incredible, compared to the heavy, wire bead commuter tires I'd been using on my old-school hardtail MTB.

I've got some of these on a bike I don't really ride. I wasn't sure whether they'd have more grip on the road than something with less tread like the Conti 4000s on my main bike. I've got 28mm Contis, or 42mm SKs. Which is best for out and out grip on the road - maybe a stupid question, but I just wondered about the tread difference. I've got tubes in both, and run 50psi on the SKs, 80 on the Contis. I'm not experienced enough to feel it for myself.

It wasn't until I discovered how nice it was to ride in the back roads in the mountains in Japan that I could ever think of watching a video about what type of tires to put on my bike and find out absolutely fascinating, as good as any Hollywood movie I'll watch this year. I was wondering if you had this ride on Strava as I'm wondering what the snow conditions are like? I've never ridden on a snowy road so I haven't been out to the mountains in the winter as I assumed it was risky but it didn't look too bad...
