WE'RE ALMOST DONE!! - Cracked bulkhead repair series - Part 10 (Episode 115)

In this episode we get almost all of the tabbing done inside the boat, which connects the bulkheads to the hull. It is a huge accomplishment, and we have so much confidence in our repairs, as we plan to take this boat around the world!
This series will show never before seen footage of how we straightened and strengthened a 45ft production catamaran, in order to be able to complete a circumnavigation. Located in Linton bay, in Panama, we meet our fair share of challenges trying to rebuild this boat from the bulkheads up...

A message to Lagoon: The positive attitude, determination, and skill shown by Colin and Jamie is a testament to the unique people they are. Can you imagine other Lagoon owners undertaking this level of teardown and reconstruction? Inconceivable. At this point, there are no remaining questions as to whether these failures are a result of shoddy construction, or hurricane damage. The design deficiencies are obvious, and the pervasive shortcuts taken during construction have been exposed to the light of day. Multiple youtube channels are confirming this as typical, rather than anomalous. Now we will see what kind of company Lagoon is. Will you step up and rebuild these boats, and your reputation? Or will you dodge responsibility, and put your customers and your company at risk of sinking due to catastrophic failure? At this point, I'll be looking elsewhere for my next cat.

I believe (not sure) I read somewhere that they repair them, but the owners have to pay. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, to me, this in depth analysis shows clearly that there were enough build and design flaws, to cause this issue.

The Munnymen step into a firm with a good reputation. [Mercedes, Boeing, Stanley, etc, etc, ad nauseaum] The good engineers quietly leave. A new best selling, cheaper range comes out. Quintillions are spent on it's look and it's marketing. The failures surprise millions of faithful customers. People lose their money and in some cases lives [Boeing]. No one bats an eyelid. We mostly just shrug and walk on. There are entire countries and governments who specialize in this. We can now call it Chynafuckation. Society needs to learn basic engineering in order to demand more from products and to not take any Shite! Jail the board members, banksters and managers.

Since taking a sailing course in April I've been watching many of the youtube sailing channels. Colin is kind of an extreme example, but I've been so impressed, and frankly heartened to see so many young people (I'm 65, so most people are 'young' to me), accepting incredible challenges related to boating. They just put one foot in front of the other, knowing the only thing that guarantees failure is to give up. There's so much bad news spewed out there by the media, when in reality there's so much to be inspired by, and so many people to be inspired by, like Colin and friends. This is what life's about.

@@geoffallen1331 It seems to be a problem of engineering (yet meeting standards, but not tough sailing conditions), because adding extra plywood, expory and fiberglass in the bulkheads and around the beam is cheap, and not worth penny-pinching for a boat of that price. The extra weight wouldn't even dent performance. It also seems that the deck wasn't bonded well to the hull, which allowed the structure to twist -- that would be a problem of engineering as well as manufacturing.

I imagine myself doing this work here in america where there are marine supply houses all over. Then I think of having to do it in the middle of a jungle in a third world country.DAMN! The amount of thought that went into the planning to gather the parts and ship them to the jungle itself was impressive.

It's hard to explain to people how much work goes into restoring and repairing boats, houses, cars, you name it. What they see in 1 hour or less represents literally hundreds of manhours worth of work. That's why when you pay a professional to do it, it costs a lot of money. Great to see that you guys are almost done with the worst of it, that was a mammoth undertaking, as a home builder and historic restorer I am impressed by your skills. Can't wait to see you sailing that thing across the Pacific again!!

I will leave you a quote from my late Grandfather that I think applies to you guys: Hard work spotlights the character of a person; some people turn up their sleeves, some people turn up their noses, and some people dont turn up at all. Cheers!

Strength of character, a sense of self worth, and a strong pride, seems to me to be, what drives successful people... Colin and Jamie are two of these people. And of course, we are ANZAC's... Never piss off an anzac... Never say, it can't be done, and don't play the poor me game. Yup, successful people just get the job done. It's a pleasure to see people just getting on with what needs to get done. What a great channel... I want to adopt spot...

Colin and Jamie: I have been watching you all from the beginning and especially during this latest repair/rebuild. I can feel for you all. I have been working on my house for 8 years. I teach year round, so I don't make that much and I don't have a lot of free time. So, I have to live in the construction debris, dust, lack of heating or cooling, and a myriad of other conditions. But, like I think where you are, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know that you will have such confidence in the boat when you finally do put back in and make your way back through the canal and start heading for your homeland and beyond. Frankly, I am jealous. Good on you!

Collin, remember your education. A beam should be able to withstand tension, compression, shear, and torsional forces. Are you 100% sure the fiberglass patch will provide adequate support? Fiberglass is definitely strong, but it really doesn’t add any cross-sectional area and the wooden bulkhead portions are broken.

This repair series is absolutely my favourite thing to watch because at every frame I feel the pain and determination you guys have been pouring into your dream. And I especially admired when you took a few minutes to remind everyone how extremely hard this is. Unless they had to deal with something similar, most people have really no idea of what level of willpower is needed, not just to start, but also to commit till the end. I know what the price is. You might assume it's mostly the physical work, the never-ending glassing or the sweat coming down from your head mixed with resin and dust... But it is way more than that. It's a mental challenge, not very different from a sailing passage where the ocean decides to throw the worst at you. Each time, when you think you passed the worst, you get even more. It tests your mind but also your heart and therefore your relationships. If you're lucky only 20% of your friends are able to sustain this kind of punishment for this long and not run away. So suddenly, just when you get to the worst part, you find some of your friends (or more than that) leaving you. But moments like this reveal those rare relationships built to last. As other people said, I find it beautiful to see Jamie with you from the beginning and still there in the fiberglass dust looking forward to a simple cerveza later. Anyone can jump aboard to sail and have fun but how many can stick around outside the water to deal with this? I know for a fact that a few months from now, while you are crossing the ocean to New Zealand and looking at the sunset you will appreciate even more the friend who was with you during the rough times. And nothing will ever be able to compare to that feeling. Thank you for sharing this process which I can relate to so well. I don't think anyone else was able to show it so well. Keep going exactly the same way you already did and I'm sure we will meet somewhere one day. PS: Hope Silvia sticks around too, I get the feeling she has the right stuff. But I'm Italian and might be one sided on this.... :)

  • @glennedwards1449

@@hanssolo4ever There is a difference between poor quality workmanship and an actually design fault. It does appear that the Lagoon 450 suffers from both and likely that the entire range suffers from the later. A lot of the shoddy workmanship Issues are not safety critical in fact have remained undetected for years. A manufacturer builds up to a standard. This standard does not have to be high it does have to be safe. A better solution is normally time and cost prohibitive this translates into a higher sticker price making the company uncompetitive. I would agree that although Lagoon is using the same methods to save costs their QC is lacking compared to other production boats
