WE RAISED THE ROOF ON OUR SKOOLIE!! || Ep. 6

Hey everyone!
We are back, and we raised the roof on our bus!! We are so excited to have this big step of the build behind us. It was a little scary, but overall everything went super well, as you'll see!
We hope you all are healthy and well,
Noah, Carla & Olive

A much easier way is to cut all of the rivet heads off rather than later have to fight to marry jagged cut line and have to use 50 gallons of bondo. It all goes together so much eaiser. I know everyone that is cutting the roof off to raise it has watched this method by those that invented this way of doing it this way. When cutting off rivet all you need to do is just cut the rivet head off and not destroy anything behind it. Then you have rivet hole on the roof and the body to line up your new sheet metal to use a a guide to drill holes in the new sheet metal and then rivet it all back together.

Because we are not doing riveted sheet metal for siding, we weren't too concerned about jagged edges at the time. But, after cleanup we agree that removing rivets prior to raising the roof would have been the cleaner thing to do.

How is your build going? I just found your channel and it looks like you live in Oregon perhaps? We just bought our bus last week and are in the Willamette Valley! I would love to know there are other Skoolie builders out there going through the same thing!

@@ketsiabella4657 most roof raises I’ve seen are 8 in to 13 inches. We you also have to think about the stuff that is going on the roof. Like toilet plumbing panels if doing them. Or if you going to add a deck. Antenna for something

That bedroom addition is really interesting. Any worry about the added tail swing or being over 40 ft for state or national park rules/ admission for camping? Having the same bus ourselves and having done a roof raise I can appreciate the effort involved. I found reskinning it to be much harder than raising the roof. Just a whole lot of work. That side emergency door is surprisingly heavy... way heavier than it looks.

I believe we are just under 40ft, and are planning on being mostly stationary, so are not too worried about camping admission/extra tail swing :) Yes, we are mentally preparing ourselves for that, and expect it to be a whole lot of work. Did you use rivets or screws when you reskinned your bus? And yes, haha, that door was surprisingly heavy!!

@@everydaybus7967 I used 18 gauge cold rolled steel and mostly 1/4 inch steel rivets. 1/4 and 1/2 grip. .I would recommend 16 gauge instead. More rigid. Get 2000 rivets up front.

Why so high rise? Is it going to be road legal? Ore is it for a stationary build.

We did a 22.5 inch raise, which is well below the legal limit. But we are also not planning on traveling far so are not too concerned about it.

More details about this process please!! I have been searching everywhere for a video that shows someone almost making their bus a double decker and not just gaining a few inches. It looks pretty solid. I would love to learn more about your planning process and how you chose the materials. Most importantly what clamps did you guys use to hold it up? Definitely looking forward to more videos.
