We PORT Old Rusty NITRO Engine - More Power For FREE?!

In this video I take Charlies old Ansmann Virus, to try and extract some more power out of the 15 year nitro engine by doing a custom street port. I should mention that the engine has been locked up in the past. Also the fact i have never done this before. I do run some tests to see if I can in fact prove that the port job has improved performance. Watch to see what happens!!

    from own experience (because i port my out of spec engines as well), the more 'material' you remove, the more fuel you are going to burn. of course, this is still very little fuel.. but its going to happen. still, this is give or take the best diy port job anyone could do at home given they have the tools to do so. i salute you for your findings!

    Nice work, 1 year later!. I carved up a old HPI Nitro Start .25 and made it sing much better. Advanced the timing in the crank and channeled the liner, shimmed the head, ect. Drop one more size tighter in carb restriction and it will probably pull wheelies, with a center diff. Tighter carb restriction gives you better low end throttle response, at the sacrifice of a bit of top end. Some of the top end can be brought back with a better pipe. Longer run times as well with a restrictor. The Gimar "Red Putty" heavy modded Team Novarossi's had a aluminum 7mm restriction, on a .28 8 port, with a 9mm overall-throat carb. That modded engine covered both the bases, low end and top end. Gimar modded "Red Putty" anything is a animal motor, that starts right up, first lick with preheat.

    You can hear it and not only does it run smoother but you have less drag. I've seen people completely cut the piston sleeve off.

    I did this with a Rossi 45 airplane engine. I also cut about 1mm off the top of the exhaust port. It made that old Scat Cat go like stink on a tuned pipe. It's been a while but I do remember getting almost 21k rpm on the ground with a 9x7 prop.

    9x7 is a small prop for a .45. I used to use 9x6 on my .25 that was only a stock standard General purpose Magnum for a trainer 3 channel, rudder, elevator, throttle only. An old Sig Apollo. In the mid 90s. Great memories 😊

    Probably, It's the cleaning of the engine that improves the performance, not the porting, The porting will only inflate the nitro consumption. Your exhaust residue will be more (wet) now, with all the unburnt nitro.

    If that were true then porting wouldn’t be a performance modification. Naturally porting would increase fuel consumption when you richer the mixture, otherwise the amount of fuel going into the carburetor is the same, ported or not.

  • @paulspomer16

    @paulspomer16

    That’s literally how more power is made… by increasing the fuel consumption (along with air consumption as well). When you port these they are able to stuff more fuel/air mixture into the cylinder, making more power. Porting DOES increase power

    The most significant improvements will be on the Mid to Top end of the RPM. I also find balancing the crankshaft gave me the most improvements from idle and acceleration. You will need a lathe to get it really balanced and to remove any kickback. I would say you did a great job. When I used to race 1/8 Onroad & Offroad back in the early 2000s we had no choice but to port, polish, and balance as even the high-end OS, RB, and Rossi engines were poor performance. Everyone was modding the engines and if you wanted to podium you had no choice but to learn how to be the best at improving engine performance. Especially, with the longer straightaways they had back then. Which is why I enjoyed running the stock class quite a bit. It was racer against racer not car vs car.

    Hi 👋, it might be worth contacting, David Mills Prestwich models, if he is still about, you could of polished the inside port of a crank, and flair the top open, When machining the liner, it is best to hold it in a soft pair of jaws, so you have both hands on the Dremel tool, after running the engine for the first time you get staining marks on the outside of the liner. This is a good indication of where you can actually machine the material why to make better fuel flow. If you make yourself up a timing plate/disc to bolt onto the shaft, and take note of where the piston opens and close the exhaust port, this is something you need to do very very carefully. You can open the exhaust port up only by a few thousand at a time. Without knowing what sort of engine it is, there is ways of cutting away part of the piston at the bottom., At the moment, I cannot remember what you need to do, as it has been nearly 50 years since I have race tuned a engine, I was back in the late 80s, early 90s, are used to race, radio controlled hydros , 3 1/2cc CMB 7 1/2cc OPS 11cc 15cc CMB , AT THE time I was one of the top races, it is a good idea to get several piston, a liner sets and hundreds as well, Suggestion, get yourself a little black book and take notes of what you’re doing and what degrees you are machining things to do, and I suggest keeping one as piston liner as stock, Good luck, with your project, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
