It's really wild hearing you say that the characters came across as unrealistic. Part of the reason this book stuck with me so hard after reading was it really felt like the closest I've ever seen someone get to portraying what I felt like as a mentally ill teenager. A lot of teens with depression, who are ostracized for being queer, who grow up in abusive or otherwise crappy situations do develop the kind of weird apathy seen in the book, and the forum especially reminded me of a lot of the very weird online spaces that would crop up when I was a teen for people dealing with those things to aggregate (and that I honestly still see floating around today, though not as often with how regulated the internet has become). It is an amazing book. Probably the only book I'd describe as a Feel Bad read and still highly recommend.

I agree, I used to be friends with kids like that. I thought they were very realistic. The author was clearly pulling from personal experience.

ive read this book 3 times now, its easily my favorite horror novel. im not the smartest person lmao but i dont think there are any concrete answers about like, anything really. but the genius of the book is that it makes you FEEL like there should be. like theres the whole section where ahmir is reading documents in tylers room if i remember correctly, and theyre talking about experiements Tyler's dad did with hallucinogens including whorl. and you read that and its like, oh shit, finally some concrete info, maybe i can piece this together. along with like, Lu's bf mentioning various gods? like st gobnad or some shit? but when you try to piece this stuff together, you get a big nothing. its incomprehensible lore with too many info gaps. but i think that adds to the horror, like the mystery is so incomprehensible that the book itself doesnt even understand whats happening. and that just adds to the overall vibe of like, this book has evil in it and everyone is doomed and theyll never know why. i feel like maybe thats what the title implies as well, like, the text leaves a lot of contextual negative space for the reader to fill in with whatever horrifying theories they come up with. i can see how your takeaway would be a story about drug addiction, but i saw it as less about that and more about like, the bleakness of living in a nowhere town surrounded by hopeless people who are doing anything they can to distract themselves from their shit life. and how even if you get out, that shit stays with you forever. go ahead, leave, make new friends, build a better life, but your past will hang over you like the sword of damocles. maybe the town is the "negative space" in a more literal sense, but that feels a bit on the nose. no clue why animals are referrenced so often but that goose thing is the freakiest shit.

I got your channel algorithmed to me from your Extreme Horror video (I'm totally going to read Playground now). I enjoyed that video and was thinking "I wonder if they have a video on Negative Space..." Lucky me! I'm glad you like it, it's one of my new all-time favourites. Fun fact, there's a small connection from this book to Amygdalatropolis, another of the author's books, through the forum!

Good timing, you posted this video right as this book was next up on my TBR! I just finished it and I agree, it was a great read. I would definitely need to go through it at least one more time to really grasp certain aspects, especially the ending, and Lu's narrative in particular. I was reminded in some ways of the first season of the Netflix show Dark. A group of teenagers grappling with a mysterious force larger than they can comprehend, an inescapable sense of foreboding and malice, and the complicated relationships between them, all while living day to day in somewhat of a nowhere town. If you like that show but think, "Hmm, could use more masturbation and hallucinogens," then Negative Space is the book for you! Definitely looking forward to reading more from Yeager as well as Apocalypse Party.

One of my favorites. The one horror book I've read that actually scared me (ok maybe The Croning by Baron too). Negative Space gave me that feeling like I need to cover my eyes and peek through them to continue.

I just finished this book and I feel dazed. I'm in existential crisis following the depiction of time passing in it. I haven't read any Brett Easton Ellis yet but I saw Nowhere (Araki) so I understand why people link them, I would also compare it to Donnie Darko (Richard Kelly) (more in form than in substance, but still )

You have sold me on this. The character switching perspective kind of reminds me of The Grip of it by Jac Jemc. Will give this one a read once I finish The Book of Accidents. Recently finished Ito’s Uzumaki so I kinda want to see if this “out-weirds” it 😂

Hello . Thanks another interesting book I may check out. I am a little positive on the negativity of this tome, but more negative on the positive elements. A book recommendation for all my fellow creeps. It is called The Nosferatu Conspiracy: Book One: The Sleepwalker. It has the Romanovs, Rasputin and vampires, what else can you ask for.
