When it comes to the books, you actually need to read the whole series to grasp the complete story. Don't get me wrong; with each book, things get weirder. However, it remains an incredibly interesting read. The first book comes close to being a pure horror novel. The second one, titled "Spiral," acts more like a mystery story and features the most intriguing protagonist in the series, in my opinion. The third installment, "Loop," delves deep into science fiction and is all over the place. Despite all the strange occurrences, I still enjoyed the entire series. While the author tries so hard to be experimental at times, it ultimately provides an interesting read. Additionally, I loved the first short story, "Coffin in the Sky," in the Ring 0/Birthday collection. I didn't care much for the rest of the series, as the third installment felt like the end of the entire saga.

I have purchased Spiral but haven't read it yet. I'm very invested in the strangeness of the series. I'll try to get to it soon.

Okay, so here's the thing - I feel a lot of confusion in the west comes from the fact that we don't have the cultural touchstones this story is based on that perhaps someone in Japan would. For example, the image of Sadako with the white dress, long wet hair, creeping around exacting vengeance on everyone actually is based on an old Asian myth from Korea. The name for it is Cheonyeogwisin which roughly translates to something like The Virgin Ghosts. The whole idea behind it was basically a way for parents to terrify their daughters into immediately finding a husband and popping out kids lest they turn into this vengeful, tormented spirit. My take away from that was having the professor be revealed as a virgin loops it back around to emphasizing the idea but also that in Sadako being physically different from most other women, there probably was a lot of familial pressure and abuse on Sadako for that which I always figured was why the movies just cut out the middleman and made a family member kill her. There's also a lot of complicated concepts around gendering in Japanese myth which I'm sure is also symbolic in there. There's a lot more to it I imagine that I don't know but yeah, my basic point is a lot of the novel doesn't hit home as well to us in the west because we don't have that cultural knowledge to draw upon. Sorry for the meandering ramble, I did like the video! 😅

Also, obviously virginity was going to be important - it's in Sadako's very name - sada = virginity/chastity, ko = child, so Sadako = virgin/chaste child.

I've been obsessed with this movie since it first came out.... I actually liked the book but I admit it's all just soooo weird. I actually read the whole series and it just gets worse and worse 😵‍💫 genuinely at the end I had no idea what wha going on, so I'm looking forward to seeing your reactions hehehe

The thing with the taped-over instructions is there in the 1995 TV movie, both radio dramas, and in the South Korean remake.

Underrated novel and author.

It may not be real but it is partically grounded in reality - Dr. Ikuma, Shizuko, and Sadako are inspired by the real-life Dr. Tomokichi Fukurai and two of his subjects, Chizuko Mifune and Sadako Takahashi. Also, En no Ozunu, whose statuette gives Shizuko her psychic powers, was in fact a real medieval Japanese ascetic and psychic who was in fact exiled to Izu-Oshima island.

In the novel, or in the 1998 movie for that matter, she did not imprint anything onto the tape - she broadcast a psychic TV signal that happened to be recorded because a kid staying in cabin B-4 with his parents, put the VCR to record the tv show he wanted to watch, but set the VCR to the wrong channel.

I think it’s cause their is a tradition of Hermaphrodites my mystics. Like the Oracle Tiresias was associated with hermaphroditism due to a divine curse. I think it’s made to make the ringu lady seem more mystical and other, life if they made her an Albino or some other rare omenous trait.

I thought the book was out there also, but the way it ended had me laughing maniacally. Cold blooded!

I think it was honestly the weirdest horror book I've ever read haha.

It would be cool to do this style summary of dark water, same author as ringu, same movie director as ringu and has an American remake.

The incubation period is before you get the first symptoms, but you're already infected and maybe able to infect others as well. This is why COVID-19 was so difficult to put under control, for example - the incubation period is 14 days and you can already infect others doing it.

I like how the book's tape had them have the desire to keep watching. If I turned on the tape from the movie I'd turn that sucker right off!

Creepy and demonic... it's just slowed down. By that logic, the intro of One Vision by Queen (the slowed down "God works in mysterious ways... Mysterious ways...") is also creepy and demonic.

"Frolic in brine, goblins be thine" is a nonsense translation, in Japanese, the line is "Shoumon bakkari [shiteru to], boukon ga kuru zo" in the Sashikiji dialect, translated by Ryuji into "Mizu-asobi bakari shiteru to, bakemono ga kuru" in the movie and "Mizu-asobi bakari shiteru to, obake ga yattekuru zo" in the novel (the line is one of the old woman's lines in the novel), both meaning "If you just keep playing in the water, the monster is going to come".

Shhh... noone tell her of the 1995 TV movie, the 1996 Japanese TBS radio drama, the 1999 TV series, the 1999 South Korean remake of the 1998 movie, the 2012 British BBC radio drama, and even two different manga adaptations - the 1995 one and the 1999 movie tie-in.

"Ringu" again? It's the English word "Ring", written in katakana, u-padded to fit into the Japanese phometic constraints. Suzuki literally said he found the word in an English-Japanese dictionary.

i liked the book and loved the Japanese film, not so much the American version, like Hollywood has to take every successful foreign film and make it American.

Why didn't you use the full 4:3 uncropped version of the Japanese video?

Hm. Sounds like the plot to every Final Fantasy game lol. Japanese storytelling is basically writing a hundred ideas, put them in a fishbowl, then randomly grab and pull them out as they need a twist lol

I was so surprised when i watched the new movie rings hell of a back story.

I see why the movies never explained where the video came from. That was so convuluted!

Kinda sad how such a great book series from such a great author seems to be just "weird" in your video... this man brought us Ringu, Dark Water and more and was often called the stephan King of Japan. Sounds all a little disrespectful how you potrait the book, especially when you trying to understand something, read just one book of a series and make fun of it like...if to make fun of it you rly don´t need to make a video...

I thought there was no way some dumb book could scare me like the American movie, but I bought the book off Amazon, and one quiet night, I spent 2.5 hours reading it, and then finally, I had to physically slam the book shut and throw it down because I was right it was fucking dumb.
