    MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 3/4 BIG FIRE EXTINGUISERS ON THE BOAT with you there ALL THE TIME !!!!! on fire watch !! You have been warned !! YOU MUST MUST be there for all the welding as it will catch fire if your not!!! Use Jotun Jotamastic 87 on bare steel after blasting . 2 coats is best and will last a lot longer than 5 years in freshwater Its not cheap but cheap will cost you in the long run

    Chloe front & wall? err bow and hull perhaps? Starboard (Right) Port (left) (there is always some Port left in the bottle)) from the stern. Where were your Sacrificial Anodes? Narrow Boats have a lot of Electrolysis loss of steel due to all the electricity in the environmental water. In Central Heating this is the Black Sludge where the Steel and Copper react!

    I'm renovating an old boat and it was pitted, the local boat builder told me just find the serious pitting and put small welds into the pits, I went to a marina where some boats are on dry standing, and there I saw the very thing, it looked like frog spawn along the water line, so I got a top welder in for the day at a fraction of the cost of full 6mm over plating.

    Acetone will resolve the small amounts of dried on foam if you need too. (nail varnish remover)

    hi chloe and ryan so glad that you are forging ahead, you won't regret it in the future. all three of you will be back on the water again and life will be a better place for all. That was really good to hear that you may well go after the 2 pack. it will be the best investment for the future. Chloe things are really sounding positive big hugs to all and take care Mark Alberta, Canada

    Touch of get the cheque book out, sadly. but it will be peace of mind after the original hurt. You're very right as well about spray foam quick to put on and a nightmare to get off if it's behind walls when welding the outside is involved.

    My boat hadn't been out of the water for over 10 years and needed a full over plating. So worth getting it done though. You will have piece of mind.

    It’s a shame because the inside of your boat was looking lovely, but it will be worth it in the end. You live and learn, I guess what you’ve done is a bit like renovating inside a house without mending the roof first! I think a lot of people will learn from your mistakes and not make the same ones themselves. I’m guessing you will be living on your boat a long time so it’s worth doing things properly. It sounds very expensive. Take care. X

    Remember the new steel will have to be blasted before 2packing adding to the cost you can do it without blasting but it will not last very long

    Don’t overplate. It just as easy to cut out the thin areas and fit a news section welded flush. If you have a good welder fabricator. If you are getting access behind anyway this shouldn’t be a problem. It will also help your resale value as you won’t be covered in very obvious plates. Overplaying is a lazy welders idea!

    Will cost twice as much as Will need welding from both sides and means stripping out more of the inside

    they'd have to strip the whole interior of the boat to keep a fire from happening as they cut the old plate out. Even cutting with a cut off blade will cause a shower of sparks! A torch would be worse.

    With that much steel won't the ballast need recalculating?

    Hello from Kansas! I know it won't help in your situation, but I've never understood why the boat builders/designers don't put a sacrificial strip of steel along the waterline that could easily be replaced over time, that way keeping the integrity of the hull intact. It sounds like you've got a good handle on your situation. Thanks!

  • @presspound7358
    @presspound73582 ай бұрын

    I just came across these narrow boaters and I was wondering if the base plate has been carefully examined. I don’t wish to be the bearer of bad news but if there’s pitting on the sides… wouldn’t there be pitting on the base plate as well. Just wondering. Might as well make sure that this job is complete before putting here back in the canals.

  • @jimgolden886

    @jimgolden886

    Yeah there will be pitting to the base it’s not usually as bad and as a rule I’m “guessing” this was built to the Standard specs of 10/6/4 meaning the base plate 10mm so 4mm thicker than the sides in my experience it’s rare to get pitting that bad on the base plate as opposed to water line. The production quality steel it was originally built using also makes a huge difference as well. Just my tupppence 😊

    @@p46967 It’s very unfortunate that consumer laws aren’t more stringent in the UK. That couple is out thousands and thousands of pounds because the market is based purely on “buyer beware”. I saw two other cases in which the so called “surveyor” gave a clean bill of health to pieces of crap… in essence working for the seller. Not sure that surveyors are professionally trained or licensed. If these kids had a large following someone could suggest a Go Fund Me drive to help them out. Either that or wealthy friends and/or family. Hope something happens for them.

    Spray foam, especially as insulation, should never be used on any type of boat. It soaks up water like a sponge and can sink boats before you'd ever realise there's a leak, either from a hole in the Hull, or more likely from a water pipe. Also, was the boat not hauled out of the water for a full survey before you agreed to buy it?

  • @philelliott5327

    @philelliott5327

    Rubbish! 😂 spray foam is closed cell so does not hold any water. Just the opposite, it is used in thousands of boats as floatation cells. It is also used in many boats as insulation and is very effective if correctly applied.
