We met a local celebrity in Johor Bahru 🇲🇾 | (First time in this city!) Malaysia Vlog 2023
Our first time in a city that we've never ever been to... It's a special one! A Malaysian of ours has never even been to this city...
The city sits on the Southern side of the peninsula.and we got a chance to meet a local celebrity... If you want to follow him check out @BreakawayBites for some great JB action.
Johor Bahru is a city many only pass through but we had the chance to view it with a local who offered to show us around..

We decided to go travelling and ended up living getting stuck in Malaysia during 2020 which spurred the creation of this channel, we're now back on the road after a lengthy hiatus!
We're Malaysian and Indonesian enthusiasts who enjoy discovering spots off the tourist trail and don’t like taking ourselves too seriously. We're not here to be vloggers or to be famous, we're not necessarily here to "inspire" anyone to travel either - just enjoy the spontaneous fun of it, weird situations and of course making local friends.

I'm a JB boy residing in KL now. JB is indeed an underrated city in Malaysia. Guess you guys missed the annual Chingay parade in JB that dates back more than 150 years ago; held on the 21st night of the first month of Chinese calendar. Btw, the "smelly river" is actually Sungai Segget. It got its notorious name due to the stench of sewage from the wet market in the 80's and early 90's on the site where JB City Square currently sits now. The city council has done an excellent job to clean up the river and revive the area. But we locals still call it "smelly river" 😂 If you are looking for vege food in JB, there are two restaurants serving vege food at Jalan Sutera in Taman Sentosa. Restoran Sayur-Sayuran Xiang Ji serves vege cuisine but the food is a little bit pricey whereas Kuai Le Zhai Restaurant serves mixed vege food at economical price.

I truly miss the food stalls area near the parking lot along the indian temple back in the early 90s. Me and my friends (we are singaporeans) would travel there during our off days and marvel its grilled stingrays and siput sedut(snails) dishes; never mind the stench from the river nearby. 😊

We actually made the Chingay parade - we arrived to JB that evening and rushed to go! It was very cool though, we’re glad we made it!
What brought me here was because I miss JB so much! I was born and bred in JB but went to a boarding school in England in the mid 90s. Been living in London ever since and now Im beginning to miss my hometown. Thank you for this video and i still can recognise a few places there!
We just moved to JB from USA couple of months ago and live around the corner of CIQ. There are still many places to be explored. You can beat the location that's so closed to Singapore. We take monthly trip to SG if not biweekly 😄Enjoy your visit!

JB. Origin of everything in Malaysia. Constitution, language, dress-code. All originated from this place. Colorful histories dated back to the 15th centuries. Rules by Muslim monarchs that has tattooed all over his body. Dubbed as 2nd wealthiest man in the planet before WW2. Had a connection with Queen Victoria, Churchill, Hitler and Tokugawa Shogunate, and escaped the wrath of the Western Dominion by playing both parties. Johore maintained uncolonized till they joint the Federation of Malaya. He and his father built many palaces around the city that predated any modern history - most still standing today around the town vicinity; - Istana Besar built in 1860's - Istana Zaharah built in 1860's - Istana Marble built in 1870's - Kota Jail - Federal Penitentiary built in 1880's - Mawar's - Ex-Palace belong to Princess - Hospital Sultanah Aminah - built in 1930's - Istana Bukit Serene - Place where fate of Singapore during WW2 laid in its tower. British refused to target this tower used by Yamashita as a battle station as it belong to Sultan causing the fall of Singapore. - Many more. Segget River once stood an island before reclaimation works. There built the 1st iron bridge by local Architect, the same guy who built the famous Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque and Tyersall Palace in Singapore, a gargantuan magnificent palace with 400 doors equipped with electrical supply in 1892 first in Asia belong to Johore Sultanate. Not to forget, its land of Rockstars. Golden age of rock started from JB. Most Malaysian renown rock bands were came from JB. Yet, JB lay under radar escaping foreign attention.
We at Melaka will speak English most of the time and Hokkien as well. But in Auckland where my wife, she is from Batu Pahat, Johore and my daughter, we speak English most of the time.

johor state is malaysia's "daddy state". johor baru was the capital of the great johor empire after the city of melaka was conquered by the portuguese. at one time it was the biggest city in malaysia, but kuala lumpur and ipoh and george town penang overtook it. nevertheless, johor is remembered as the mightiest empire in south east asia. in indonesia, the johor empire is remembered, likewise singapore, malaysia, brunei and the philippines. johor the empire has three phases in history. first, the hindu era where it was centred mostly in palembang, sumatra, indonesia. second, the muslim era where it was centred in melaka city, malaysia. third, the post-melaka era where it was once again centred in jb.
