Hi guys, welcome to my birthplace Sibu. Yes, it was once gangster city since my childhood around 1980s - 1990s, now not anymore. I am Fuzhou ethnic if you don't know yet. Now I work in kuching, still miss Sibu, fond of old memories.

I'm from Kuching but i like Sibu. Sibu have the old times vibes compare to Kuching. People in Sibu are nice and friendly. Like any other places, you'll be safe as long as you don't make trouble.

Sibu was the gangster city. After the decline in the timber industry, now it is more pleasant to visit. The new gangster city and wild wild west is Bintulu.

In the olden days, commerce was done solely by the Chinese immigrants. The Malays were mostly farmers and/or fishermen while the Dayaks sometimes would come out from their jungle longhouse dwellings and traded wild jungle products. Nowadays, even though Sibu (or any towns in Sarawak) seem to have strong Chinese elements, you will get some Malays and Dayaks participating in commerce too. 2:08 Sibu town started during Charles Brooke, not James if my memory serves me well. 5:23 I’ve bought some kuih lapis from them a few years ago. They were really nice. I do recommend. 😄 13:53 Sibu doesn’t get many foreign tourists, so it’s understandable that they’re curious when they do see some. Behind you is a stall run by a Dayak (obvious from the name 😆).

I first arrived sibu end 2005. Was transfered there by my Co. Heard lots of the foo chow gangsterism there. The first nite there, read news of gangsters fight where a hand was chopped just happened. Hence never really explore the city at night esp the pubs scene. But gradually got to make many friends among the foo chows, Iban native etc.. They are some of the nicest friendly people ever met. Lasted nearly 5 yrs there with great memories...

In Sarawak, Kueh Lapis is served in probably almost every major ethnic major celebration. Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Gawai. Even as a Sarawakian, I find SIbu different, the vibes is different. A very distinct character. Btw, "sulit" in Bahasa Malaysia is usually meant secret, private. We use "susah" to say difficult

Another great vlog, love your interactions with the locals and you speaking the language I think is appreciated. The road to Sibu from Kuching also had a reputation for bandits who stopped and robbed buses at one time. That market in Sibu is indeed vast, regarding Kek Lapis, my favourite was one with pandan and cheese, but there are a vast number of different flavours, another good one is the classic school pudding flavours of chocolate and mint. Can't say I have tried Midin, which is jungle fern I believe, great thing is, with the diverse culture is the wide variety of food available.

You should spend more time in Kuching as there are many more vegetarian food cafes in Kuching. There are three, not three but four vegetarian cafes opposite of our private hospital called Timber Land at 3rd Mile, Kuching. There is a vegetarian cafe at Padungan Road. A friend saw you at the Indah homestay and cafe last Thursday.

the fern you guys eat called midin, the uncle pronounced it in foochow accent. Sibu is a chinese town where 85% population are chinese, mainly Foochow chinese. Buah keranji has two type , one dark brown flesh taste sweet , the other one orange colour flesh taste sour. Good quality buah keranji has thicker flesh & small seed but not ez to find, buah keranji are hard timber wood fruit.

james brooke acquired sarawak from the sultan of brunei, as a reward for quelling a revolt by the bruneian viceroy ruling sarawak (the people with the abang title). he ruled as an independent white raja but was backed by london all the way and followed the agenda set by the british crown. his nephew charles brooke and grand nephew charles vyner brooke who succeeded him did likewise. after 1946 the brooke family decided to make sarawak a direct british crown colony and this lasted until sarawak gained independence in 1963 as a member country of the federation of malaysia together with sabah and singapore and the 11 states of peninsular malaysia which got independence earlier in 1957.
