    I was in Korea last year and I’m going back next year. If it weren’t so far away, I’d go every year. It’s an awesome country with a ton of things to do and so many great places to eat. I have family there, so that made it even better. I would have been a little overwhelmed without them. Busan and Jeju are also great places to visit in Korea. Enjoy your trip!

    I find the restaurant prices aren't too bad, compared to the bonkers price in the US now. An entree with drink at a casual spot is near $20, plus tax, plus tip if you're sitting down. Head to non tourist spots and you can find some pretty cheap eats. You can fill up on cheap oysters if you're into that, especially in a coastal city like Busan. BBQ meats and hearty meat based stews are a plenty, but Koreans do a lot with vegetables. There are so many dishes with pickled veggies, roots, beans, etc.

    Gangnam is definitely not hipster. It is a rich elite neighbourhood. I was surprised at the cost of the data, but I think they have free data in the subway. Food in Korea is definitely more expensive than South East Asia, but way cheaper than London. Rent in Seoul is very expensive and so is produce due to the lack of land. Bear in Mind if you go to a traditional Korean restaurant you get side dishes with free refills, so going out for meals is a good deal compared to the West. The Korean diet is actually very vegetable forward. There are definitely vegetarian options, but vegan is more challenging because anchovies/ fish sauce are often used for flavouring.

    Looks like you guys hit the right spots! Gangnam is where all the upscale retail and flagship stores are. It's also the plastic surgery and skincare capital of Korea. All the cool places USED to be there, but I think the trend has shifted to the other side of the river, and Gangnam is now quiet at night. Seongsu and Hongdae is the hipster area. It's like the Brooklyn of Seoul. The area you went walked around with all the pizza shops is rockin' at night even after 1AM. You have to go there on a Friday and Saturday night and you'll see all the expats.

    Produce is more here cuz it's not all GMO (genetically modified organisms) in factories. It's mostly mom and pop farms and it's very seasonal. Personal space is not a thing in one of the most dense cities in the world, so on the subway you just squeeze your way out. It's impractical to say sorry to every person you touch, just go with the flow.

    As a Seoulite in her 40s, I am amused you call Seoul bustling. Since the last president, people do not work such long hours anymore, and people started to drink less after work and make a beeline for home. This intensified with the pandemic. Young people learned to go to the gym, and just watch Netflix at home. The club scene is so lame. The streets are empty, at least for me. 10 years ago, Itaewon, hongdae would be so packed in the weekends, we literally were stuck together with strangers on the street, as in shoulders and bellies would be touching, like a packed subway in rush hour. It would be like that till 5 am in the morning. My aunts moved to the US and came back home to retire last year. They were totally floored how empty the streets are at night.

  • @VeggiesOnTour

    Ahh great insight this, that's a shame. I heard something like this, but I can't believe young people would drink less. That's interesting about eh hours. 40s is still young btw!!! Keep partying!! 👏🏻

  • @ohjinmyoung7350

    @ohjinmyoung7350

    9 күн бұрын

    @@VeggiesOnTour Nah, the partying scene is too lame. doesn't feel like it when the streets and clubs are empty, at least for me. Well, it is a good thing. the late hours, drinking all night and going to work immediately afterwards meant no time for family. It was common for people to have no connection to their fathers, as they rarely saw them at all. Ironically, as people spent more time at home, they started to get interested in child rearing and thought they can not have kids as they are working too much, and birth rates are plummeting. So when people worked longer hours, and actually never saw their kids at all, they just left the kids alone at home alone and worked and partied all night and were fine with it and had tons of kids. As for the young people not drinking.....they are becoming sedentary and gotten awful fat, though still skinny by western standards. Koreans produce 36.4 percent less insulin than white people, so this is means they get diabetes even if they are only bit chubby. Diabetes in people in their 20s went up by 50percent in the past 4 years! and 27percent for people in their 30s... all in the space of 4 years. Women are getting way fatter (though still skinny by western standards) so they can no longer wear heels and form fitting stiff, clothing anymore. Everyone is slobby in terms of dress. When I was that age, I always wore pin heels for work or the club. The fashion industry says it has to do with rapid weight gain. Though of course, it is still nicer than the west as we are not that fat. Sad to see how we are going in that direction and at such a rapid pace. This is a great tragedy as diabetes and cardiovascular disease comes at much lower BMIs for Koreans

    Gang means river. Nam means south. So Gangnam literally translates to south of the (Han) river. And there is Gangbuk, which means north of the river where buk means north. That's why Koreans call North Korea Bukhan. Hangook is what Koreans call Korea and as you can see, han is part of Bukhan. Koreans don't think it's a derogatory word. But due to it referred negatively by Westerners, the second syllable of Hangook can't even be typed out in youtube comments or the comment will be deleted. In reality, the term means country as it is used in this context.

    Warm wecome to S. Korea!! :) As a person originally from Gangnam (River South, Gang means river and nam means south), I can say that the area near Gangnam Station is not the fanciest to be fair. It's more like the Oxford Circus area in London. The truly elite esque area in Gangnam is Cheongdam, where you can see many prestigious retail stores and celebrities; it's more like Bond Street or Chelsea in London. Genuine old money people live in the serene Gangbuk area (River North, Gang means river and buk means north) though, which is greener and more peaceful. Have a lovely time here in SK. p.s. Music on the train signifies that it's a transfer station where you can switch to another line lol.
