I gotta say, I honestly think the home depot lamp with the box diffusion maybe looks better. The light is slightly harder, but in a flattering way. It gives the subject's face more definition and shape. Not only that, since the light is harder, there is a really nice ratio without the need for negative fill because the light isn't bouncing all over the room. Surprisingly, the really simple solution is not worlds apart, just a different look.
Absolutely loved the ending. You showed how you evolved from very simple lighting, to more complex setups, only to go back to very simple lighting. Except the difference is that now you are approaching the simple setup with more knowledge than before.

@@AnimeZone247 If you watch more videos from this channel you'll see that they think lighting is very important. I interpreted the ending to this as an acknowledgement that lighting is only one part of the video production craft, and that if you can get strong results with using less resources you'll have greater ability to focus on other areas that are also important.

@@MeridianMedia yes I have watched a lot of videos from this channel. And the goal is not to use less lights, it’s to get the point of the story. And if you do that using less lights that’s great. Plus their last shot looked ugly, unless that’s look they’re going for. But if you only doing that bc less lights, and not bc of story, then that’s atrocious 🤢🤮

Man, it's like you're retelling my production career. The flat panels bring back memories. We filmed in a shadowy room, with blue tinted windows, with the sunlight coming through the windows. We ended up using two panels, a system with five 100w fluorescent bulbs, and one panel for a keylight... Lots of recovery in editing...

You’re so kind!!!
Are you kidding me? This is step for step exactly the journey I went on! (even a short stint into hotlights). The similarities are kind of creepy
I'm a big fan of walking into thrift stores and finding vintage lighting. I used to find a tone of photography stuff but I find fewer pieces now. But I have bought 2 "movie lights" in the past year. They are like 60-70 years old, they are made to expose for super 8 film, but it's literally a bar of 4 edison screw bases. One that I bought had 4 halogen lamps that said "movie lights" in the center, they are 300w each. I've tried using them a couple of times, mostly for fun, but you get four shadows. I should probably pump through an 8x8 and it would look fine, but I'm not brave enough. and It gets hot. I have one set up with blue tooth speaker light bulbs right now and its more of a novelty than actually useful. Still neat though. I also found an old smith victor A120, which they still make a version of today. I bought the plastic clip on diffusion from their website and now my wife uses it for live streams.
Great video! You mentioned feeling embarrassed about having a "Photography Lighting Setup". For me, I started as a photographer so once Aputure came out with a bowens mount COB I was thrilled because I knew much better how to shape light with a softbox than most traditional video lights! It is crazy to see how things have shifted!
Dude great video! The nostalgia it hurts. Also the ending hit so hard! After years of working as a gaffer with hundreds of different DPs, I always say a good DP knows how to light, a great DP has the courage to shoot with nothing.

I would love to talk sometime. I’m sure your knowledge is indispensable
Awesome shot of all the aperture light boxes in the background.
Man, I could listen to you talk about lighting all day. Also the new cut looks great, makes you look a lot more masculine
I found specially with a lot of interview to famous D.O.P that everyone start with less gear and then with time buying more and more light doing enormous set to light a scene to eventually with experience return to utilize the less amount of gear possible, prioritizing the simplistic way to light a scene
I’ve wanted to bounce light for ages but I truly do not have the space for it! But I use the ol 120d for a key light with the 60d with spotlight for interesting backlight and an LED wand for a rim light
Best sentence of the video: I dont think so much about lighting any more, but about the story!! ❤️😊 So true. Lighting is a tool, when you have no good story to tell, it doesnt matter, how great a scene looks! :)

@@robertruffo2134 thx for the response. I wasnt as clear as I wanted to be: Lighting does matter! But lighting without a good story is also a easy way to get fired ;) so you need both! And yes, when talking about Feature Films, good lighting gets more attention then good story, thats why there are so many bad movies. In smaller production I always emphasize the story before thinking about lighting. And yes: lighting and story are interconnected and cannot be seen seperately, I know :)

Thanks for this valuable video! You are talking from my heart! I love to light on my way too. When I was investing to my light gear, I saw the same you're saying, that there is a trend and there is the traditional way of lighting, using light modifiers....
Great video man! And yeah that Lewis Potts is awesome learning a lot from you both thanks a ton!!
In conjunction with this, log, raw and finally waaaaaaaaaay better dynamic range on sensors has also facilitated the move to just using a window like we probably should have right in the beginning. This lighting journey is so close and raw it almost hurts, though I did stop buying more stuff after the 120D and went to windows from there because of a Mark Bone video. Had I started making money from videos sooner, I definitely would have made it to at least the 300D II which I remember being on sale here in NZ a while back, solely for the ability to fill faces on full sun backlighting. Your video got me right in the feels man and kudos to your wife for being able to sit through the hot lights. I only ever had off-brand red heads, they were hot enough.
I haven't been watching KZread lately but I enjoyed this a lot. It was cool to see the amount of expensive lights you used just for little details like filling up a room in the background. The effect of the negative fill really surprised me. I know this was used but seeing the a and b side by side was really interesting. Relying on windows makes me really nervous though, as beautiful as it may look, I always end up shooting on cloudy days where the exposure and wb is all over the place...
The greatest lighting channel out there! If I could watch this video in the beginning of my filmmaking path it would be much less complicated haha

That last one is definitely “best” IMO and just controlling full on the face gives you control over the mood.
Like the new do! Good stuff, as always.
I’ve had a love hate relationship with lighting since the start My first endeavor was getting the classic work flood light from Home Depot the aputure MC was my second chapter- realizing that it’s not powerful enough to work as a key light outside of a highly controlled environment I then took on just shooting everything natural I then later got a job as a full time videographer with access to the 300D MKii and have only used them for 4 commercials. The c stand carrying case and just overall are so freaking heavy to carry around and it’s a process to set up as a one man crew. I feel like every time I think about lighting too much and try to manipulate it, I end up making things worse. I guess I’m just a natural light guy. Maybe one day I’ll master them, but the classic KZread set up with the 120d and giant dome is just too basic of a look to me and it gets way overused. Just my opinion. Really enjoyed the video! Thanks!
What a story, Mark! No, seriously I love it!
thank you for this one. I think this will change my way of working. I liked what you said in the end about trends and how nothing is original these days. At this point I have learned enough about lighting to be able to experiment without making the basic mistakes. I am so tired of everyone's opinion about right and wrong, when the lighting can be a preference or intentional.
Thanks for the video, it gave me strength to keep trying

I think every filmmaker who wants to learn about lighting should watch this Do you feel that tungsten lights are out of the window to use? It seems like the color just needs gels to be controlled. Nice trip down memory lane. I remember how we thought the fluorescent lights were great that they generated almost no heat compared to the old Lowell's but the light quality was meh. Moving to the first adjustable light temp LED's, they looked great too, but the throw was horrible. Any distance from the subject and they were way too dim. Looks like the modern versions have it just right.

Hey, the thumbnail is epic and gave me a good lough, thank you :D I don't know why Shane does the cyan to ceiling, maybe for the orange teal look? But if you ad blue/cyan to the ceiling on the window side it can create a more natural light because normally on a sunny day you won't have a single source light coming into the window - you also have the blue reflection from the heaven.
Such a brilliant video

I think for me the main thing that changed lighting for me was the COB lights. My Amaran 100d & 60x are so much easier to modify then my old panel lights. Plus they are nice and small for packing light
Never could get into COB lights... the cabling spaghetti and flipping huge modifiers for travel. I still sneak in my ancient Lowel RIFA 88 & 55 kit for interviews when I know there won't be a window in the shot... tungsten just looks too dang good and the Lowel fixtures pack so dang small & light
I like those slightly janky DIY experiments. I'm more of a sound person but I'm definitely going through the equivalent stage myself, and I think there's a lot of value in going through that. If you had to start over today, what would be your starting kit in order to grow and learn?
Love it
I went to a television studio closing down and bought all of their lighting for about $500 and I thought I was King of Glow Up island. Those things burned hot and could barely be adjusted. Absolute nightmare.
thanks for this
I really, really like this video. I was thinking about the evolution too. How many things have changed since I graduated from film school about 6 yrs ago. Im seeing less 10ks, 5ks and more Led lights like aperture that don't get as hot:)
The real story needs realistic light, fantasy - needs fantastic light!
Windows on a steady cloudy day are the best! They only tend to get problematic, if interviews take a long time due to the light direction shifting. But for a half hour take - diffuse the heck out of windows and let the sun do the work.
For me, you're the best channel. One of the last to be ORIGINAL. I like your energy I'm giving a thumb down to help you with the algorithm tho lol

I think the trend to film with less lights is directly connected to what you mentioned about there just being too much gear
I also started with lights from Home Depot! lol...
Important note, it ends with just opening the window One reason to avoid that is if the window lighting is inconsistent If there are clouds that can go in and out causing the brightness to drastically change or if the sun is going up/down Also by opening the window you introduce any color cast that may be present, I find that my shots tend to be more green if there is a lot of sun bouncing off of foliage which can not be great on skin and makes color grading difficult when mixing it with studio lights

Really cool Video, I learned so much. Why did u use a 1200 Light and darken it instead of a 600 and lighten it?🤔
"worry about the story" is fine if you're also a director, but on larger teams, the cinematographer's job is only the image, so by "worrying about the story" you're not really doing what you are paid to do. You are paid to support the story. Also, natural light is fine and all, but continuity will likely be a nightmare.
Nice.

Bro whipped out the window at end, what a twist
I realized using Big LED Panels= creates a flat image. 🤕🤕 So light source should be a *point light* that mimics lamps & other practical light from real life. Problem is- unlike those LED panels- you now need to *soften that harsh point light* via huge Bowen Mounts light domes or diffusion panels forcing you have to carry C-stands, which makes the production a much more cumbersome thing to pull off. No guerilla shooting. You now need a full team, which is a bit of a bummer... 😕
