I'm impressed that your plate was able to be consistent enough to use given that you took away the lights. Somehow that didn't make it too dark. Good work! I like this idea of using a plate to clean up aspects of a shot that are static.

What I usually do when the budget is tight and for instance, there's only money for two cameras, is one goes to the wide angle (and funnily, we have been doing this clean plate to get the mics and lights closer for years, so now that I see it on your channel, I think we are doing things right haha), and then the other camera goes to the main speaker of the interview, a good closeup. then, at the end, I'd turn this camera to the interviewer and ask them to ask the questions again and then do some nodding and gestures in silence so we can cut them into the edit, so it looks that there's always three cameras. Usually it works like a charm, and in Spain, where I am based, a tight budget is waaaaay tighter than a tight budget in the US. You couldn't imagine how much, things are so different around here in terms of production money. Anyway, thanks a lot for your content! I love what you guys teach and how funny and ironic you are. BTW been following lewis for a while now and he is great! take care

It did change the background, at least in the example they gave at the top of the video but not enough to be noticeable in the medium shots. The background art was far enough away where it seems like there wasn't a lot of spill from the big boxes. Still would have been interesting to see, tbh. Maybe a timelapse from the perspective of the big US flag ;)

One of the best on YT, y'all keep it exciting and fresh. The biggest take away for me is not the gear, which is always great to know, but it's about your signature style and technique fully breaking it down as to why you make the desicions from framing to lighting etc. Hay thanks again for the inspiration, look forward to learning more from EPIC LIGHT MEDIA and your HARDCORE MASTER CLASS.

this is my normal interview lighting, except for a couple things. I don't like to use one's key as a backlight because it's not really a backlight. It's on the same side as the key so it's not adding anything. I use my grids to focus the key to that person. The strength of that boom arm is the key. I have boom arms that I bought years ago and they don't have teeth, so they slump under weight. I end up using sandbags or I rachet strap the boom from the hook to the legs which gives me comfort. Lately, I have been using a lantern ball in the middle of the chairs, and then use a big fill light (usually a 4x4) over the wide cam. I haven't had any issue with raccoon eyes doing it that way. Doing it this way also gives me a high key-like set.

Like your self depricating style. I know the closer the key the softer it will be, and love it when one light can do two jobs, but moving your key lights just a bit further back though, would give you some more wrap around backlight. Good channel, thank you.

You make the facts fun and funny! I don't know if I want to slap you upside your head or hug you...probably both in some weird order 😂! My producer is always rolling her eyes whenever I ask to order something because she knows it is going to be something related to darn lights! I light and back light everything in the studio and at home. I light and back light the plants, pillows, the dog's bowl, his bed and probably a few of his bones are lit up somewhere. I create shorts just to light something. Keep up the excellent presents.

Another way to light (if you're getting the clean light anyways) is placing a lantern right in the middle with flags to the back of it to control the spill on the background. Like wise for the mics. There's plenty of space between the speakers and that would've saved you from setting up 2 lights and booming them over

@@jm1jonas indeed but these stands cost 400$ each which imo is way too much if spent for basic setups like this. Some relatively cheaper c stands can get the hairlight job done fairly easily. In such controlled environment, even Aputure MC's can do the job

This was another soooo helpful video - thanks and kudos. I have ordered already the Kupo junior stand. Genius! One more thing.... Didn´t you have a different color shine from the lights with the background when filming with the wide angle lens? Even if you mask the people out, which would be a lot of work, it would look different, or not? Thanks for any reply. And sorry... I have still subscribed :-)

Great information. Would love to see a tutorial on how you cut this together in post. Not that I'm a subscriber or anything.

Really useful video - thank you very much. Can you explain more about how to get the clean plate shot? If I take it without the lights and the boom mics, won't that show some different lighting compared to the rest of the interview?

I am a major fan of Epic Light Media. My set up includes multiple Bmpcc 6ks, Sigma art glass and multiple Aputure light Dome 2s. . . How do you measure for proper exposure with a ( simultaneous wide and tight shot ) multi camera set up? Especially for the really beautiful "Hi-Key" commercial look that you always produce.
